I have had some pain and general discomfort in my right flank for a couple days, so I decided to go to ER last night. So in true 2020 fashion, I got a 2-for-1 diagnosis of a kidney stone in my right side AND a cyst on my left ovary! They did blood work and CT scan, gave me IV fluids and pain meds. Sent me home with Rx for pain meds and fosemax(?) to help it pass.
I know these can be very painful to pass -- any suggestions other than LOTS of water and take pain meds?

Honestly, I think you just have to try and relax and hope it passes quickly. Definitely up your liquid intake and stay on top of your medicine. Sorry you are dealing with this. They suck.

I had a couple bad bouts when I lived in Japan. My Japanese friends said lots of green tea and water, and move. So I did, pretty sure I walked most of Tokyo for a day or two. It was that or be hospitalized, and I’ll do anything to avoid that. That’s been my go to even 20 years later. Fluids and movement (if you can, I’m well aware the pain can make that untenable).
Compwalla told a similar story. They were living in Germany when her Dad got kidney stones. His German friends told him to hit up the beer hall, drink lots of beer and dance German style (the traditional style with thumping). Worked for him😂
I’m sorry you’re getting double whammied. I didn’t have gall stones when my gall bladder went bad, it was found because I had kidney stones again. Bodies are just weird sometimes. I’m hoping both the cyst and stones pass without too much pain.
ETA- Lemonade can help prevent stone’s from forming. Good to know if you keep having issues

I ended up having my surgically removed because it was jagged and stuck. Did they tell you to do AZO? It helps with the spasms but turns your urine a funky color of orange kool-aid. Stacy

my daughter just went through this -her doctor suggested beer (but she's only 20 so didn't do that) - lots of fluids, take the meds, if you can't pee go to the ER

I honestly don’t know if there is something in the green tea that helps or if it’s a catch all good drink for the Japanese.

Ugh, sorry you're going thru kidney stones. I had a big one a few months ago and asked here how do you know you passed it. I was having pain two weeks after being diagnosed. Well it was because I got a uti right after so hence more pain. Liquids liquids and more liquids was the solution for both issues. And moving but that was difficult.

Ugh, sorry. My DH has been trying to pass one for over a month with no luck. DD has to have surgery every time because she has tiny ureters. I hope you pass it soon. DD thinks the surgery is worse than the kidney stone pain.

Try to find out what kind of is, then maybe you'll get lucky and you can control future outbreaks via diet.

Fluids and movement (if you can, I’m well aware the pain can make that untenable). Definitely this! Also, if the pain meds make you constipated, take something to help with that. If you're constipated, it just increases the physical pressure on the ureters, etc. and make it harder for the stone to pass.

While as a nurse I “know” you shouldn’t mix alcohol and pain meds, but I can tell you that DH has suffered many a kidney stone and drank a lot of beer while doing so. They have pretty much all required surgery, but he was at least in a slightly better mood during it 🤷🏻♀️
And be sure to take the Flomax. It can help and he has always been prescribed it post op to help as well. Good luck to you!

Flomax, black cherry juice and lots of water helped a family member. A stone was tested and he has to eat less red meat and strawberries.

Thanks for all the tips -- had not heard that about beer (too bad I don't really like the taste of beer.) Also had not heard that AZO helps too but it makes sense.
Hoping that it won't be too complicated but I will continue the meds and the water!

Another question-- does the presence of the stone create the constant sensation of needing to pee or is that likely due to the ovarian cyst causing pressure? I got checked for UTI and that was ruled out. So I was wondering if this was side of effect of the stone or something different.

Lots of water. When I had my first one in 2010, the ER Doctor told me I should drink half my body weight in ounces of water daily. So weight 150 = 75oz of water daily.
Drink cranberry juice, it's good for urinary tract. I have heard that bromelain(in pineapple juice) is supposed to help with kidney stones.

When I get one, I feel like I have to have a BM. I think the act of bearing down relieves some of the pain. Maybe the same is true for feeling like you need to pee. One time, the CT scan showed I also had an ovarian cyst. I followed up with my OB/GYN who ordered an ultrasound, but they didn’t find anything. My OB/GYN said sometimes CT Scans can show something is there when it really isn’t. I hope this happens to be the case with you. Good luck! I hope it passes quickly and painlessly. Vicky P.S. - it could be worse, you could have shingles along with a kidney stone.

My husband had two for the first time in his life about 6 weeks ago. He drank LOTS of fluids, they broke up, and they actually passed pain free because the fluids helped break them up into smaller pieces. His urologist was very pleased. Praying that you have the same result. Oh, and Tylenol arthritis and ibuprofen together were his friend! Hugs!

It's back pressure while the kidney wants to move stuff forward but can't.
