My grandfather's cousin was 21 and died at the very very end of the war (14 Oct 1918) in "France & Flounders" serving with the Highland Light Infantry. (They were on the Western Front so he was most likely killed near Courtral on the Belgium border.) When he died (only son), his father packed up the family Grandfather Clock and shipped it across the Atlantic to my grandfather. My mother still has it. She had it appraised one time and the guy was saying it wasn't worth all that much. I just wanted to smack him up the side of the head! That clock is priceless! It's almost impossible to imagine what it would have been like for the Highland Light Infantry fighting in the mud and trenches of France and Flanders, they lost so many at the very end of WW1. The Flanders poppy is our symbol on Remembrance Day. One of the ceramic poppies at the Tower of London will be for your Grandfather's cousin. I know exactly what you mean about the clock - of course it is priceless - we have a couple of family things with the same kind of history!

I suppose so. His name was Clifford Heaton, just in case anyone happens to hear it.

I hope it is gar , haven't come across a time for it up until now though. The projection is due to start at about 5.30pm and continue until 11.00pm - so maybe it will be included in the BBC2 highlights of this mornings events starting at 5.30pm.

Here are a few of my (and DH's) pictures too. Oh, those photographs are beautiful! Love the close up shots of the ceramic poppies, especially the one with the bird perched on a poppy! We have ordered our poppy and the close-ups show how lovely they actually are! Thank you for sharing your photos!

jennyap really lovely, although the photo with the bird lead me to think that there is probably a lot of confused birds around the Tower at the moment! I saw a photo on the BBC site showing people had attached crosses, with names and poppies, on to the railings at the Tower a bit like the locks attached to bridges. Thank you for sharing.

jennyap, those photos are amazing, but that last close up one is worthy of a wider audience than this. Is could be in a national paper...just stunning. Thanks to everyone for sharing their photos and stories.

Gorgeous photos @gar...any idea how they made the poppies appear to be pouring from the window? It really is the most stunning piece of installation art I have ever seen.

I've just been reading about this! The Production and Design Team at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth, were asked to do the designs for these installations. Plymouth Link To Ceramic Poppy Designs

I'm think her username is actually gar2 - it only seems to work with the username, not display name (which I guess makes sense as some people have spaces in theirs)

Piggy-backing on your Q about the @ link- happens to me too- sometimes the link goes live, sometimes it doesn't. No apparent reason. While everyone is in the mood for WW1 commemorations, we SA'cans finally got to see War Horse on stage this month- The Handspring Puppet co are from here and that made it even more special. The Horse, the tank and the poppies were my favourite parts. Did any of the UK ladies see any white berets in the march past the Cenotaph? That would have been my late FIL's lot- the Arctic Convoys.

So very heartbreaking, it is still an emotional chord, even one hundred years later. While stationed in Germany, I did go to several battlefields from both wars, the ones from WWI are still in many ways raw, trench lines still visible, the rough tumble of "no man's land" still there under the grass and vegetation.
Thank-you all for sharing your personal photos of this remembrance.

I didn't know that The Handspring Puppet Company UK is a new sister company to the original company in South Africa. I can imagine seeing War Horse was even more special seeing it done by the Capetown company! They do that so brilliantly!! Yes, we saw the white berets at the Cenotaph......being a Naval family we notice things like that! We were talking about the fact that the Russians have now awarded the people doing the Arctic Convoys the Ushakov medal and the medal presentations that have been done recently to veterans and their families. The Arctic Allied Convoys endured a tremendous amount doing the Murmansk run taking the tons of strategic cargo to Russia essential to the war effort. The seamen doing that run experienced awful conditions and faced so much danger!

Thanks for sharing your photos Gar and Jenny, they're amazing. As much as I want to go and see them I don't think I'm going to make it sadly. Here's a very interesting site covering a lot of the questions that have been asked in this thread ( some have already had answers) but a lot of info on here. Obviously the sale and dedication part is no longer available but the rest of the details are very interesting. Tower of London poppies

Life happened in the form of drop-in visitors and we missed it. We saw the highlights on this morning's news, but only the Q, DC and such. So glad a lovely Naval family was paying attention for me.

The poppies are quite stunning. It shows the reality of war since each poppy represents each life lost. It's a shame it can't be left up forever.

This is stunning. Why an amazing and beautiful tribute. I had not heard of this before. The effect is so... I don't even know what word would describe it but I think it perfectly conveyed the appropriate thoughts for this memorial.

JennyAP... Thank you for sharing your pictures. They're beautiful! Love the close up of the poppy. I wore a poppy yesterday in honour of your countrymen. (<---notice the spelling? ) I'm so thankful for all of the armed forces all over the world that fight for freedom & democracy.

jennyap - Well, I am extremely glad for your indecision! Love them all! I never would have heard of this if Gar hadn't posted this thread. I clicked around the dial yesterday looking for coverage on TV and found nothing. But it doesn't matter..... 'cause this is a great documentary right here!
