I think it's a lot of fun! Last year I went to Walmart and saw an elderly women checking out the sweaters they had for sale, I took a closer look and they were all ugly Christmas ones, score! lol

Sorry, this thread just reminded me of this movie. And I'm sure everyone could use a little Mr. Darcy in their day .

you can always make one Perfect! My sophomore and senior would love this for ugly sweater day at school. They would walk around school with the arms up!

"A ton of money"--where are ya'll looking for an ugly sweater that you're spending a ton of money?
Goodwill and thrift stores live for helping you find an ugly sweater. They almost always have a section for it. And it's never more than few bucks.
Go for it OP!

Yay! They are totally fun. To those who say they won't participate because they don't have something to wear, then Bah Humbug. Not sure why someone would not want to have fun because they didn't want to buy something to wear. Go and have fun anyway, just don't dress up.

I was just at Goodwill yesterday and they had Christmas sweaters for $19.99, $24.99 and $29.99. Who would pay that for a used sweater?

Christmas sweaters have become freely available in the UK over the past couple of years - I don't know what triggered the trend but they're in almost every store and range from absolutely hideous to really quite tasteful!

Most of our thrift stores have figured out the popularity of the sweaters and have raised the prices accordingly, if you can find them at all. Last time my DH made one for a work party because we couldn't find any and the ones we could find were over $25 at Goodwill.

A friend's daughter (teenager) had an ugly sweater party last year and asked if I had any scrapping crap I was willing to part with for it (ribbons, rick-rack, buttons, brads, etc...) I guess if you didn't already had an ugly sweater you could trim one you are wearing. The girls just "tacked" with a couple stitches stuff to their clothes.

I'm attending one this year, and plan to make an "ugly" skirt out of a tree skirt. It's my husband's Christmas party, and dress is business causal/ugly sweater. I really don't want to wear slacks, so I plan on wearing black stockings, black pumps, the fugly skirt, and a button-up blouse, and a light up Christmas light necklace. I know it's not a sweater, but it's still in the spirit of things.

I say "nay" on this. It was a fun idea years ago when people actually wore real ugly sweaters, but now that they sell kits to make your own, and folks have taken to just sticking random crap on old sweaters to make them ugly, I think the uniqueness of it has run its course.

They're hilarious. Especially fun at school, where some of the teachers don't think their sweaters are of the "ugly" variety. But they are. OH, they are.

We were invited to an ugly sweater party last year. I thought I'd get something at Savers for a good price. Boy, was I wrong! I think you can get a brand-new ugly sweater for less than what they charge for an old used one.

I suspect 2 of my normal holiday parties this year will end up being ugly sweater occasions, so I have been looking for something to pick up. Ugly sweaters are a little trendy this year - I've seen them in a bunch of stores.

Just curious, where do you buy these sweaters? Are most of them vintage and found in thrift shops or have the discount stores come along with the trend and started producing them? I imagine the best ones are hand-knitted ones that were never meant to be trendy! New Christmas sweaters are sold every year and just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, ugly is in the eye of the beholder as far as these sweaters go . It used to be really easy to raid a parent's closet or find old Christmas sweaters at thrift stores, but with the popularity of ugly Christmas sweater parties, thrift store prices can be higher than going to Walmart and buying new. if you are crafty, can sew or work a glue gun, it is pretty easy to add festive touches to any plain sweater and DIY an ugly Christmas sweater. Pinterest is full of great ideas.

I went to the thrift store today, and those of you who mentioned Goodwill hiking up their prices on ugly Christmas was spot on for my Goodwill too! They had a great selection all in the $19.99-24.99 price range. Too expensive for a second hand ugly sweater IMO. BUT i did score a very ugly bright red sweater vest for $4.99. I am going to tacky it up! It's perfect!
