I have about $19.00 remaining on a Visa card, and I am never sure about how to use all of it. What do you do to spend it all? Or do you just let it drift away?

I use it on something that costs more than, and use my regular card to cover the rest. $19 is too much to slip away! Or get something for just under that, and let the rest go.

Oh my goodness the options are endless! First and foremost I would likely go to Amazon and order some thing out of my wish list. Or I would just use it towards groceries, or at Target, etc. There is no way that 19.00 would be a challenge to spend! 😆

I'd probably go buy a gift card to whatever store for the exact amount I had left on the visa card. It's really the only way I can think of to spend every cent on the visa card, unless you can find a store that allows and knows how to split the payment among credit cards. Sometimes their processing system won't let them... sometimes the cashier doesn't know how. When I was in retail, I had to do the credit card last if we were splitting payments, but that would mean you'd have to have a calculator and a bunch of cash/change to pay enough in cash to have your balance left for the card.

When i have small bits left on those kinda cards... i use the rest up in my gas tank... it will stop automatically at whatever funds you have left.. then just toss it into the trash there by the machine...even 3.27 is like 2 gallons of gas...

Wait, what? $3.27 gets you 2 gallons? That won't even get me ONE. But that's a great idea.

Or get something for just under that, and let the rest go. I think that is what some of the gift card companies are hoping people will do. DD received a gift card from her company in lieu of the annual party this year. It's one of those Vanilla Visa gift cards. First item in steps to use says "Make sure the balance of the Vanilla Gift Card is more than the entire cost of the purchase, including taxes". Makes it kind of difficult to use up the entire amount. Multiply those few cents and dollars by the number of cards sold and they can tack a nice amount to their bottom line. I'd probably go buy a gift card to whatever store for the exact amount I had left on the visa card. This sounds like a good idea and I will pass it on to DD.

You don't need anything for 19 or more dollars, you'd just throw it out? Groceries? If your bill was $50, swipe the $19 and pay the remaining $31 out of your pocket.
In Canada those Visa gift cards have monthly fees so if you let it sit long enough you won't have anything left to worry about. My DDs would get them from their great aunt and found out about the fees when a bunch their money was gone 😕 The next year I took their gift cards the week after Christmas and used them fully on my groceries and gave them the cash.

I don’t understand the question really - just spend it next time you buy something. You don’t buy things that are more than $19?

I didn’t explain very well my dilemma. I will not be letting the balance be un-used, but Because I do enjoy spending every penny of it, I am searching for creative ways to do so. And loving the responses❤️

There's some embroidery things I keep looking at. And there's a handmade section of Amazon kind of like Etsy with bath bombs.

This is a great idea. As is buy an Amazon gift card and add to account. I get Visa “rewards” cards from my bank and have had small bits left. Some stores will not let you use multiple cards to pay.

Whoa... $19??? I would never let that slip away... I would use that anywhere.. Target, groceries.. I would use that puppy up in a heartbeat. I just threw away a Lowes gift card that had .50 cents on it or less and I felt super guilty... but we can't get the card to scan and I have been carrying it around for a year. Finally I told the cashier just to toss it so I can get on with my life.. HA

I wish I knew. I have a handful with $5 and under each on them. Tried to use them at Walmart but they wouldn’t work. The gas station idea I’ll try next!

Many of these Visa gift cards will deny approval of the total is MORE than what is left on the card. So, it is literally NOT possible to buy $50 worth of groceries and swipe that card and have $19 approved. It just sees that the charge is $50 and declines the transaction. Period. For most visa gift cards, in most locations, you have to have the total of your purchase equal exactly, or be less than, the amount left on the card if you want to actually be able to use it. This is precisely why I do not give Visa/Amex gift cards, but specific store cards instead. The Visa/Amex cards are a scam, IMO, set up for them to profit off of how impossible they make it to use the entire amount loaded on the card.

If you go to buy something and it is more expensive than what’s on the gift card you just tell the cashier you want to put a specific amount on the gift card. It acts like a credit card so it will only work if you use the exact amount or less than what’s available. That’s what I do when I need to use up a gift card. I always write the remaining balance on the card with a sharpie as I use it so I don’t forget what’s left on it.

I have used them at Target. They can split between cards. So you put all but the $19 on another card then swipe that one.

That's true some of those cards don't let you purchase $50 of product on a $19 card. There was one that didn't tell you how much you had left and they couldn't look it up, WTF is that? So you had to spend the whole amount pretty much in one shot if they didn't write the new amount on the card with a marker and keep up with that. When did it become a bad thing to give cash? It works everywhere (which is supposed to be the idea of a Visa GC) never expires (even though GC are not supposed to now) never has fees, you always know exactly how much you have.

Thanks for your responses. The card is a reward card from my credit card. I get cash back instead of air miles or hotel points. Otherwise, I would not have it, and agree they are not always convenient to use up.

With the Visa gift cards, you need to know your balance if you're using a place that can/knows how to punch in the amount. There should be a number on the card that you can call for the remaining balance.

When they're weird numbers like $XX.32 cents, I buy an Amazon gift card for that exact amount because Amazon GCs are easy to spend and they just apply it to your purchase price and charge your credit card for the rest. Much easier than spending those dumb gift cards.

I've got a gift card that has less than $10 left on it, and I am going to use it next time I do a grocery shop. They let you do a split payment, so I will ue the gift card first then my normal credit card for the balance.

I buy Amazon gift cards for myself when I get those kinds of gift cards and have balances (or use the whole thing). It's just easier for me to spend remainder this way.

My state pays out our tax refunds on those things. We’ve had so much trouble using them. I always wonder which legislator gets a kick back on those. My husband always says he’s going to ask the state if he can use those Vanilla Visas to pay his state income taxes. 😁😁😁

DH and I each have a PayPal account. We've gotten visa gift cards before and will invoice the other for the amount on the card. Then pay it using the gift card. Sure, we get a little ding for invoicing but at least we can use it however we want, including transferring it to our checking account.
