I haven't had a deviated septum repair but have known people who had this done years ago, they were off work for a couple of weeks max. I have had my tonsils removed and that took a good 2-3 weeks, not too much pain that I recall, just hard to swallow. I found cold foods like applesauce felt the best or warm mashed potatoes, what didn't feel good, ice cream...no idea why other than I think the milk coated my throat.
I have no idea on this new pain reduction, could be he's just trying to lessen your fears. I would agree that first 2-3 days are really the worse, mostly because of the anesthesia...I would definitely go for it, he's right..you will feel so much better.

I had them both done at the same time a long time ago and I have to tell you that it was the worst thing I had ever decided to do. The packing in your nose prevents breathing. Having sore throat and pain from tonsils coning out makes you not want to eat and drink but when you do try to drink to alleviate the dryness or to take pain meds you choke because you can't swallow and can't breathe through your nose to help. I thought I was going to die.

I had the two done at the same time. The tonsils were a worse recovery, though the nasal septum never got back to 100%. It is still tender to the touch. The surgery definitely made a difference in my sleep.

I had both but not at same time. I was terrified of the nasal surgery after reading about the packing and splints. But all that worrying was for nothing. It wasn't that bad for me at all. I didn't have packing, only splints. It just felt like I had a stuffed up nose until I got the splints removed and then I couldn't believe how much better I could breathe. It really was and still is shocking to me that I wasn't breathing properly for so long.
I noticed a big improvement with getting my tonsils out too, but mine were "kissing tonsils" so it seems like there's so much more room in there now. I wouldn't say it was as a big improvement as the nasal surgery but I don't regret getting them taken out and wish I had done it sooner.
If for some reason, I could only pick one surgery, I would definitely do the nasal surgery again. Like I said, I still can't believe I was only breathing out of one side of my nose for so long and what huge difference it would make to have it fixed.

I have a deviated septum and have never had any allergist or ENT tell me to get it fixed.
