"Extreme Organization" works for me for some things and not for others. In the past I tried to organize my pantry but my issue is DH cooks almost as often as I do and he definitely is NOT an organization person. He rarely put things back where they "belonged" and it drove me batty. An organized space with things out of place is worse to me than a purposely unorganized space so I just gave up on the organization thing before I went off the deep end. The best we do with organization in my pantry is that certain things go on certain shelves (like canned goods on one shelf, baking mixes on another shelf, etc.) The refrigerator is the same as the pantry - no "extreme" organization but certain things go on certain shelves. My craft room is a different story. That is my domain so I organize it and keep it organized. Cardstock is organized in ROYGBIV order. Patterned paper is organized by theme. Embellishments by type, then by color. There are a few themes I scrapbook regularly (Disney, Hawaii) so those have their own Iris cases containing all their items, separated by type of item (cardstock, embellishments, letter stickers, etc.) Also, when I'm doing a big project (like my DDs' junior high and high school scrapbooks) I tend to pull together all of the items related to that project and put them in their own Iris cases. I can file the cases easily on my shelves and just pull them out when I need them. I don't have a lot of free time to scrapbook so I like to be organized so I can be as efficient as possible when I do have the time. My part of the bedroom closet is organized by type of garment (long-sleeved shirts, short-sleeved shirts, 3/4 sleeved shirts, shorts, pants, dresses, skirts) and within those categories the items are sorted in ROYGBIV order. I've been doing that for many years now - it helps me find the item I'm looking for quickly without a lot of searching. My shoes are organized by type (casual, athletic, sandals, etc.) I used to have way more shoes than I have now so I would organize them by color within each of those categories. Now that I'm old and my feet are horrible I've had to get rid of my less-expensive but not very supportive shoes and start buying more expensive shoes with good support so I don't have a large enough collection yet to sort by color. DH's part of the closet has no organization whatsoever as far as I can tell

I can’t stand when professional women behave like that while doing their job. Makes the two women in this show look like hobbyists. I don’t care if it’s a TV show; men wouldn’t be portrayed that way. Or maybe they're comfortable with who they are and confident that their work proves their professionals, not acting in a certain way prescribed/expected by others. That's the beauty in running your own company or working in a less uptight workplace. I have many thoughts about what we describe as "professional" behavior/dress, especially among women and people of color, after being fully entrenched in a conservative industry for many years and now working in a completely different environment. Point taken. I get it. And I’ve only ever worked in education or theatre, so what do I know? (Well, I’ve got lots of strong views of expectations of wide-eyed, syrupy behavior that are imposed from ALL corners - even university education - on elementary teachers, but that’s a different thread.) But as a viewer, I will always react. And squealing ALWAYS makes me cringe. Combine that with my doubt that these women are fully in control of production, and I’m just not confident we’re really seeing behavior choices they would have made. [Tangent: My son worked as a PA during film school on several episodes of House Hunters filmed in Chicagoland and has crazy stories about refilming reaction scenes seven and eight times until the house shoppers reacted the “right” way, including very gendered stereotypes.] Back on track: Ironically, it will take more women like Drew Barrymore to continue producing her own content before I can be more confident that the content we’re seeing reflects how women really want to be portrayed.

I'm not a squealer, so I'm not a fan of that either lol. Reese Witherspoon is the executive producer of the series, and given her production track record, I'm just not inclined to think the stars are coached into being "girly" if that's not who they are.

(Although I did notice that she was quite skilled at matching their enthusiasm without exactly, you know, matching their enthusiasm.) Okay, squeal away, organizers. I’ll watch one more episode before I decide if I can take it.

I don't think I really 'care' for those two.. while I loved Reese's extra closet, them carrying on and on about it kinda rubbed me the wrong way.. they were acting stupid giddy I think. Meanwhile, they are laughing all the way to the bank. I'm good with that. Good for them honestly. There is definitely something for everyone.

I’ve seen the show and it’s ok. I need to find the fridge and pantry shows—I love organizing that stuff. I saw a show with a Kardashian and it was just ridiculous and had to have been fake. Storing perfume and makeup “gifts” in the garage. Really? They kept talking about new lines and how they wanted the stuff organized. A garage in the summer gets up to 120 degrees—makeup and perfume would melt or evaporate. And there just wasn’t enough product for a new line or an old line. Surely they have a huge house with somewhere else to store that. Like an office? . And organizing 10 or so battery operated kiddie cars—no kid needs that many. It was just too fake. I saw the Reese episode and while I loved the organization, does she really have an entire closet for just the clothes from one show? Why? She said that she didn’t wear the shoes and they were Jimmy Choo’s! What a waste. Either put it in a museum or wear it. I just couldn’t relate. I don’t think the Kardashian episode was fake. I am sure their kid has that many toy cars. Have you seen Kim and Kanye’s kids’ playroom? The entire family is all about excess. I wouldn’t put it past Khloe to hire them to organize stuff continuously as her needs and wants change. I watched the show and enjoyed it. Though I don’t love some of their behavior, nor do I think doing rainbow organizing is the way to go, I LOVE organization. And I do believe that buying product to organize is necessary for a lot of people. For me, if I don’t see it, I often forget about it and don’t use it. So though my fridge isn’t all decanted items, I have dropped quite a few dollars at the Container Store (not their products) to improve the organization in our household. Storage containers that don’t show the products or aren’t the same don’t do it for me. Non-organization adds stress to my life.

I found just the Netflix previews too unrelatable. At least when the Kon Marie show came out they seemed like more 'real people. I guess it's almost depressing for me to see celebrities and those with so much more money than us? I don't know, it's like I'm ok with it - that's life! But I'm not going to force myself to watch it (even though I like organizing).

I agree. I only watched as a form of entertainment and to be nosy about Reese Witherspoon's closet. I'm fairly organized, but it is amazing that there's a whole industry geared towards it. I get worried about all that plastic. I actually loathe all things HGTV/Magnolia and all that stuff. My SO actually watches it and I just offer my sarcastic commentary.

I don’t know much about the personal lives of the K family. Yes, I can believe that one K child has all those cards. I’m not referring to that as fake, but the whole episode. It just didn’t seem like enough product for their businesses and I don’t find it likely that those products would be stored in the garage. Even if it is climate controlled. As soon as the big garage doors roll up, it’s 120 degrees in there. I love organization. My pantry is full of mason jars to organize it, even my tiny pantry here. So is my fridge. I find that bins in the fridge are super helpful. But I’m not sold on the show. I’ll probably seek out some of the episodes with the “commoners” and see if it’s better.

Specific containers in the refrigerator to hold yogurt cups. So when I dont want yougurt or forget to buy it, I have to stash that container somewhere else. It's just so silly and wasteful. The excitement level of having the pantry organized is over the top. Sorry, I can't get that excited about pantry organization. Haha. I don't know this show and I don't think I'd have yogurt containers, but my three teens are now three young 20-somethings and my pantry was a NIGHTMARE. About 3 months ago I bought a whole bunch of containers with those chalk signs on them (well, you stick them on yourself) and I put everything in them. Sometimes, I just open my pantry to look and admire. OTOH, I made one error. I put the dogs' treats in 4 of these boxes (do not ask me why I give my dogs 4 separate treats when I doubt they care at all), all labeled DOG. Of course, the containers have those airtight locks on them, so now, every time I get something from the pantry, the dogs fall over themselves running thinking I'm getting them a treat

I think I’m going to have to watch more episodes after reading this thread - though the organizing by rainbow color makes NO sense to me. I don’t even think it looks good in a room.
I’ve been watching season 2 of Dream Home Makeover - which has some similarly annoying aspects but I’m still totally drawn to it (the Utah scenery and her clothes are 2 reasons...)

I thought the whole rainbow thing was ridiculous too. About the only thing I'd ever consider arranging by ROYBGIV would be my bookshelf. I'm an organizing fiend too but they were far too impractical for me. I only watched that one Reese episode and then stopped. I get liking seeing rich people stuff, but stopped because I found all the giggling and squealing far too annoying. I get way more info from that darling Organized Soprano on YouTube. I do decant everything in my pantry though. I got pantry moths once, years and years ago and that freaked me out so bad I won't allow anything open or unsealed in my pantry without being in a storage container of some kind. Backstock just goes in the back. I mostly use Lock & Lock tall rectangulars, some OXOs and I love glass canning jars for things like beans and smaller pastas. My pantry is super organized and things are lined up so it makes grocery shopping much easier when I can see what I have easily. I ❤️ Organized soprano! Her voice is so soothing too. I’ve been watching a bunch of YouTube lately on organizing, decluttering, cleaning... There is a weekly playlist for the month of January, set up by the minimal mom. A bunch of youtubers all giving their spin on the same topic. Last week was decluttering the kitchen. Also I’m keeping with the thread topic, I just today got a package from Amazon that is bins to organize my fridge. I have so much stuff get lost in there I’ll see if this helps. Also I was in 5 Below today and they have the square acrylic bins for $4. I use bins (mostly old baking pans or Rubbermaid) as “drawers” in my pantry cabinet to contain and so I can reach the stuff in the back.

I have to admit after watching the series on netflix I did organize my son's books in rainbow order. Less chaotic looking now. But he's not thrilled with it. We need to do some rearranging in his room sometime soon and we will need to come up with a system we can both buy into. Although it is a lot easier for him to put books away now..."Go put it with your other yellow books" works pretty well. But not sure I could do it with adult books.
I liked that they respected people's stuff and if they didn't want to edit their stuff a lot they still found ways to make it work. A few times though they seemed to just move the excess stuff to "another area" and my practical reaction to that was, "Well, you aren't solving anything with that strategy." I've tried to employ that strategy myself. It doesn't work. I now just have an overstuffed, unorganized alternate area of the house.

I consider myself ultra organized. I've considered starting a business because I love it so much. BUT that show was completely ridiculous. I used to follow them on IG but the show turned me off so much. The episode they did at NPH house where they were sorting Legos into tiny color coordinated containers and then went on and on how important it is to have maintainable systems I just knew there was a HUGE disconnect. Very very few people would be able to manage that level of minutia. (I would have said No one except that my son has a teenaged lego fanatic friend who does keep his blocks organized by color so it is possible). It's not realistic for 99% of the population

I haven't watched the show--but books should be organized by alphabetically by authors name so you can find it! (or is that out of style now?) Except for my very favorite authors I wouldn’t have a clue who the author was so that method doesn’t work for me. We don’t keep fiction books anymore, those are all ebooks. But I don’t care for my reference books online so we group those by category. And we have less than 50 of those so it doesn’t need to be any more broken down than that for us to be able to easily find something. When we did keep fiction I kept my favorite authors‘ collections together and I think that was it.

But I bet a lot of the things that we do that work really well would drive other people crazy and they’d think it was difficult to maintain. They couldn’t easily function with the way some of my systems are set up, and I’d be loathe to function without them! I haven’t seen the show so I’m wondering if they had a reason for doing it that way, is it possible the LEGO owner was like your son’s friend? Or just part of their generic rainbow organization system?

If you follow The Home Edit on Instagram you will quickly realize that Clea does not cook. So she can organize a fridge to only hold beverages and things like yogurt and fruit. I could never have bins in the my fridge. The contents change almost daily. I may have chicken and beef one week and frozen fish and shrimp the next.

Only because stuff gets lost in the back and dies there. I’m not going to label them though. Also I already use bins in my pantry storage. It’s pretty deep so I use them as drawers to pull to the front when I’m looking for something. And I have old 9x13 baking pans on the tippy top shelf. I put the shelf high so the other shelves would hold things appropriately. So the top shelf holds two pans and that’s as tall as it is. I put my refill spices and other rarely used items in there.

I can see what I have and am not buying stuff over and over because it’s buried in the back of the pantry. They were able to determine much better locations for my pots, pans, and dishes. When they were done I had a lot of “why didn’t I think of that?” moments. But I didn’t. I’m glad they did!
