While this may be true, he's only doing this because trump has become toxic money wise and he wants to stop the money bleed.
Fuck McConnel - this is too little too late.

i'll believe it when i see him actually vote on it. look at lindsey graham---"mr. we've had a good run but i'm out". and where was mr. i'm out this morning? on air force 1 with trump, on their way to the border.
sorry, but i don't believe anything that comes out of the GOP's mouths until they actually act on it. to mcconnell i say, put your money where your mouth is and be one of the 17 GOP senators needed to convict him in his impeachment. and find those other 16 to join you to convict.

LOL. Mitch is only concerned about the potential loss of money. He'd happily back one of Trump's crazy kids for prez if he thought they could win in 2024.

I honestly don’t care why he is saying this now. I don’t care if he is doing it for optics as long as he follows through and votes to convict and thus convinces others to follow. This will not erase what he has done before, it will not make me loathe him any less, but I am glad he is saying what he is saying.

I'll believe it when McConnell, himself, is answering the question, "Will YOU vote to impeach?" with a Yes.
Otherwise, I will believe he is fine "with the process," but that doesn't mean he will assist in a conviction.
Or maybe the money guys are speaking louder in private than just their "pausing campaign contributions."
Which would be the reason McConnell will be going along, not out of any sense of right & wrong, or preserving the Republic.

I’ll preface this by saying that all of our lawmakers should be supporting the impeachment. That some of the Republicans see this as a watershed moment does not bode well for trump. Hurrah. But, this doesn’t change much in my eyes. McConnell and all the rest who have been supporting trump all this time are still complete and utter pricks. I would never trust any of them. Ever. And I hope You won’t either! ETA: I should have read replies before replying myself. Y’all got it covered

Article within the article of impeachment includes that he cannot hold another federal position.

From what I have been reading, he has not indicated if he would actually vote for impeachment.

But Liz Cheney's motivations should also be viewed with suspicion. I can't ignore the feeling that her outrage toward Trump is not because of the wrongness of the results, but from the belief that if you are working to subvert the Constitution and amass power, you can do so way more effectively, in a more reserved manner than by inciting a mob.

Folks can disagree, but I don't see this vote as excusing anything in the past - they own their past actions - BUT - I absolutely see value in finding the damn floor. That there really is a point where political expediency is no longer a justification. That you can see someone actually trying to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power and say wtf. I'm not onboard with this and cannot go along. I said way back on the 6th that I thought the only way to truly put a nail in Trump's presidency is to show that this really was unacceptable to ANYONE even Republicans who may have put up with way, way too much to push their agenda. A bipartisan impeachment conviction may be a pipe dream, but I do think that it would show that enough is enough - this isn't okay and it doesn't matter what letter is next to your name, as an American, this is not okay.

He’s just prevaricating. The weasel has said nothing about being pro-trial. This will just lie on his desk with all the other bills he refuses to bring to the floor of the Senate.

I agree with you. I think that when you have Cheney in the House and McConnell in the Senate talking about voting for impeachment and finding Trump guilty of the article of impeachment, that you are likely to have more junior GOP lawmakers do the right thing. THIS is the way to unity and healing since Trump and his fanboys and fangirls (still waiting for even 1 Trump voter to utter a word of condemnation here) are utterly incapable of personal responsibility and integrity. It will have to be through the other GOP leaders. The GOP is fracturing now. If the Trump-supporters who lie to themselves by calling themselves conservatives care about putting Republicans in office, they should do some sole searching. Because unless you all find some way to find unity when McConnell and Cheney have said “enough with Trump,” what happened in the GA senate races will be echoed across the country. The future of the GOP is not with Trump. The votes and the money aren’t there. Figure it out. Or not, and let the shift in political power last for years to come.

Sure, it would have been nice if it didn't happen with 8 days left. It might have even seemed like a moral decision if it didn't coincide with the Republicans losing their Senate majority, and major donors withdrawing their support.
But STILL, let's see how many Republican senators are re-checking to see which way the wind is blowing. Maybe there are a few more who want to disassociate themselves from the more radical fringe. And the $50 million dollars in support of re-election of Republicans who vote for impeachment is good news today, too.
I'm feeling more optimistic today.

He doesn't get to decide that anymore though right? Once Ossoff and Warnock are sworn in (sometime next week?) Mitch won't be the majority leader anymore.

From what I understand, McConnell and Schumer both have to agree to call back the Senate before Jan 19. The Senate will be 50/50 when they’re sworn in, but until Jan 20, Pence has the tie breaking vote.

I think he still is until Biden and Harris are sworn in. At that point she will be the president of the Senate and the Democrats will have the majority then.
