My sons text or call me for recipes for dishes they remember me making. We've joked about a family cookbook, but I think I'd actually like to make one.
I know there are a number of sites that do this, but wondered if anyone had personal experience with one. I'd love to hear the good and bad about any programs you've tried for creating a project like this. Of course, I'm only looking at digital options because I want to be able to print multiple copies of it.
Thanks!

I think any place that does books would work. Check out snapfish.

I have wanted to do this for years, so I look forward to the responses you get! I have thought about doing one through Shutterfly or something similar. I even thought about using the Project Life app. I have it on my phone but have never used it.

I have made two using Blurb. They were labors of love for two very special to me brides-to-be. I invited all of their family and friends invited to the wedding to submit photos of them with the bride along with some favorite tried and true recipes and asked them to include something about the recipe's meaning in their lives. I created a Table of Contents and sections like Appetizers, Salads, etc. I think they turned out great.
I don't know anything about software specifically for making recipe books.
Have fun, whichever program you use!

I have made books through Shutterfly and Snapfish so I know those are possibilities. Google shows sites however that are specific for recipe books. Still hoping *maybe* someone here has used one to report back on.
Thanks to those responding.

The recipe cards are cute Patter, but won't accomplish what I want to do. I plan to add some stories and photos along the way to make it more family specific. Thanks for the idea though.

I've had a couple made with Morris Press in Kearney, NE. One for my band to sell as a fundraiser and one for my family. They do a great job and they're really easy to use/work with!

Yes, I wanted to add stories and have a lot of control over layout, etc. Blurb has lots of templates and as you've done Shutterfly books, I'm guessing it's the same. The last large cookbook I made was 3 years ago. At the time I looked at cookbook making programs and there was nothing that worked for my needs. Hopefully there's something much better now.

I'm curious as to this myself. I was given DH's grandmother's recipe cards to pull together into a book. Three years later it's still on my to do pile, though to be fair no one expected my mother to die then a pandemic. As things have calmed down around here it's been on my mind to try and finish by mother's day this year.
I have yet to find a place that can pull her recipes together, and one of the reasons I got the "job" was because I work with layout programs on a daily basis. Plus, they want her handwriting as well as the ability to read the recipe which means the page needs the card as well as a typed out recipe. At the end of the day it's just a huge undertaking, but the resulting book will be one that will be cherished forever (I hope)

Oh, that's a great idea. I need to incorporate that with some of my grandmother's recipes, too. The only solution I've found is to lay it out page by painstaking page in InDesign.

I made one several years ago on Lulu. It was easy and people buy their own copies.

This is a project I have been wanting to get done for a couple years too!
I am torn between doing a Snapfish/Shutterfly type of book, a 3 ring binder where I just design and print each page and put in page protectors, or something else.
I really like the idea of it being printed already, and leaving several blank pages to add too. I kind of want it to be somewhat ring/spiral bound, so it can be layed open easily, and printed on a bit heavier paper..
I have a Bind-It-All stashed in my craft closet that I never use, and that would work good. I just can't get myself motivated to do it! LOL

I used Solentro to make a recipe books after my mil passed away. I typed the recipes in word and also scanned her handwritten notes/recipe cards, and then uploaded them. www.solentro.co.uk/cookbook

I just purchased a recipe (binder) kit from this website: www.tumbleweedpress.co/It comes with editable pages so you can type and print your recipes. You are also able to add your family name, pictures, and quotes to your pages. I am using a 3-ring binder with sheet protectors to complete my recipe project. Thus far, I have printed out the sections, and I’m in the inserting my existing recipes papers into the sheet protectors. Once I have everything placed, I plan to type out each recipe, add the pictures, and use scrapbook paper to finish decorating my binder. The printable inserts add uniformity to the project. This will be a “working” recipe binder that I can add or remove pages from, as needed. I found this company on Etsy. There are other companies (on Etsy) with similar products.

While that type of kit offers a lot of flexibility rcarpen, it’s not designed to be reproduced. I need to print a minimum of five copies and may need more than that. Thank for the info though!

you could make a small one using walgreens photo, if that would suit your needs. you will need to make the dishes once so you can take pics to put in your family cookbook. i have thought of doing this for a while, but i haven't done it.

I second flanz 's recommendation of Blurb. They are not specifically designed for recipe books, but with their free BookSmart software, you can create a book using text and photo templates. They produce a quality product. I've been using them for about 12 years to make DD14's annual scrapbook and other smaller trip books, among others. Beautiful products, easy software. Made for producing multiple copies. Good luck!

I designed one a few years ago, to be used with PS or PSE and then printed as an 8x8 Shutterfly book. I’m not sure if it’s along the lines of what you’re looking for, but... maybe?
Let’s Eat | Recipe Album If you want photos or scanned recipes added, you could do them as a full page next to the recipe. Prior to me designing this, we did a family cookbook and had it printed through Shutterfly. We did the max (100 pages) and they were all falling out, so I would definitely keep it more in the 75-page range. And, honestly, I might look into having it printed at Staples or something, so it could be spiral bound. ETA: You could really use this with any printing company, as, once you are finished, you basically just have an 8x8 photo.

I think my recipe binder will eventually be made into a digital book. That is the goal anyway. I am still organizing and structuring the sections. Once organized, I can begin the typing process. It is going to be a lengthy project, as I have quite a few recipes I still want to test before adding them to the binder. It is a labor of love. Good luck with yours!

My friend made one through Shutterfly and had a great experience. She's made a few other books with them as well. They have a 50% off coupon that ends on Monday so if you can whip it up in a day, you'll land a great deal! www.shutterfly.com/photo-books/recipe-photo-books
