What would you do work/career wise if you won?
I have had a dream for a very long time to open the Spin-A-Yarn Cafe. My cafe would have lots of good lighting and seating for people to do yarn crafts and an area for scrapbookers. I even know exactly what building I would purchase and that is a two story club that has been abandoned in a hip area of my town.
The upstairs would all be converted to scrapbooking space. Long tables and comfy chairs for scrapbookers to gather and crop. And the downstairs would all be cozy areas for yarn crafters. With oversized lounge chairs and conversation areas for yarnies.
I would serve coffee, tea, soft drinks and treats made special by me. I would love to do as much of the baking for the cafe as I could. I would hire young adults with autism to staff my shop. I know how difficult it can be for kids with autism to get hired. In addition, I would take my boss (who is a great guy) and let him do all the accounting for my business.
As someone who has a craft group that prepandemic met on Wednesday nights to craft, I know that our town is lacking a good place for crafters to go. We have coffee shops but they lack good lighting and cozy seating. So we usually meet at restaurants.
Jeremy has stated repeatedly that he'd like to open up a BBQ sandwich place.
If I had all that money, that's what I would do. And of course, I wouldn't even care if I made any money. I just want something all mine to focus on.
So if you won this $750 million jackpot, what trajectory would your career take? Would you keep working your normal job? Not work at all? Pursue a dream like me?

Oooh your crafty cafe sounds lovely! I'm buying tickets on my way home!
The pandemic gave me lots of time to think about what Id do if I won the lottery. Aside from paying off student loans, buying a larger house, that would also have a suite set up for my parents to live in and keep most of their independence. I'd buy a new SUV and a few other splurges. I would get my Dad a full time home health care nurse so my Mom could have a break.
My Mom has always wanted to buy a large house/facility in a wooded lakeside area outside of town that she can make a business. Things like corporate retreats, weddings, craft weekends for groups, etc. So Id look into that for her.
I myself have always wanted to do something along the lines of an animal rescue sanctuary. Not just dogs/cats, but all animals, horses, goats, rabbits, whatever. So on the land for my Mom's business I would build a facility for that with gated areas outside and a barn for the foster animals. It would be great if some of those animals could be trained to be service animals, maybe special needs kids/adults could come out and do therapy with them.
And then of course the responsible things like investing and setting up various accounts for the money.

NOTHING! lol I'm not going to work. I'm going to be a person of leisure. But I'm originally from MI so I will grab my crafty sister and we'll come hang out at your cafe. Sounds AWESOME!
There are a few things I think my area would really benefit from. Some frivolous and others there really is a need. But I probably wouldn't work them, I'd more likely finance them.
Frivolous-I would love for my town to have a fun independent toy and kids book store. Something quaint and whimsical and so fun for kids to visit.
Needed-I was a teen mom. There needs to be an impartial resource. The only thing we have here is Christian based. I'm a Christian so I'm not opposed to the work they do and see the need for it too. But I'd like these girls to really get good, unbiased information on the options they have, especially adoption. I'd like them to learn how to handle their finances and heaven forbid save and invest. I'd like them to have a plethora of options when they meet the hurdles of having a baby and going to college. There are so many ways these girls could be more successful if they had appropriate tools.
I'd also like more local options for gifted kids. My school district cannot accommodate my DS. Gifted programs are often overlooked because it's easy to say they're already good students and getting good grades so they don't need help. Most are good students but there are unique challenges as well. We have some options an hour away but they cost $20-40K a year in tuition.
Lastly, I would like to see more done for kids who age out of foster care. They've been dealt such a shitty hand. I'd like to give them some tools so they can break the cycle and be successful in life.

I like the idea of an animal sanctuary. That sounds like a fantastic way to spend your days PolarGreen12. I assume you'd be hands on and pursue that full time instead of your job?

Kerri W I would love to have peas come hang out at my cafe! All crafters welcome. I have such grand plans and ideas. I've probably thought more about this than I probably should...lol. But I like your idea of opening up a children's toy and book shop. In my hometown we had a very special place like that. And it was magic when my parents took us there. It closed about ten years ago. Very sad.

I would buy a huge house with a good chunk of land with an apple orchard and I would house orphans and foster kids and also take on the kids that age out of foster care. My house would be fun, nuturing, accommodating, inclusive and full of love. Everyone gets to stay as long as they want or need and comeback when they want or need. We would have a school and encourage college attendance.

malibou that is a beautiful plan. busy you are so lucky. You must work your dream job if you would stay. That's wonderful. I do love my job and believe deeply in the company’s mission. Plus it’s a job that I can do from anywhere, so don’t take me thinking I’d continue to work as not enjoying the spoils of the lottery There would definitely be some real estate acquisitions and (when safe) travel going on lol

I just listened to a story on the radio about a former Dallas Cowboys football player who became a down and out alcoholic after he retired. He played the lottery and won $28 million. He started a charitable foundation and has been sober for over 30 years. He is active in his charitable pursuits, but when he is asked what he does, he smiles and says “I don’t do anything and I don’t do that until after noon.”

With that much money it is fun to dream... it wouldn't matter if you made money on those businesses.. what a worry NOT to have.
I would certainly do the thing most people would do, help your parents, kids pay off debt, and so forth. I would want them to still have the values of still working, but at least they could pick just about anything they want to do, making money or not. As long as they are productive in some way I would help them.
Then spread out a little bit more into the family.. cousins and such... give them enough to at least pay off debt.
Donate to my church or similar.. non-profit.. anything to do with animals or children would be my guess
TRAVEL...
Open some kind of business... if not scrapbooking... maybe a Christmas theme store (there is a great one south side of Denver).. they have a huge store full of anything Christmas. I would love something like that.. then in the off season, travel the world looking for unique ornaments.
My mom is getting older so she wouldn't want anything.. lol.... but make her life as comfortable as possible. She would probably just stay in her home and be happy. I would definitely get her to redecorate her house.. She talks about it all the time and then says.. I'm 82, what's the point now? LOL

I’d start 2 charities.
First charity would provide legal & social services free to veterans, seniors, and those with chronic illnesses who are taken advantage of by unscrupulous companies. It will not be based on income at all because the ones based on income cut off way too low. You might say that exists, but not enough. Because I know several people who were taken advantage of. And if I had the money I’d make it right statewide.
Second charity is an art foundation that sponsors a place for new artists to show their art because the gallery scene is very ‘selective’ and ‘exclusive’ for lack of better words and can take advantage of new artists, or just exclude them for no real reasons.
My DD thinks I’m weird that I play the lottery and my dream is to create charities. Not travel, not quit my job. I have a plan down to who id choose to run my charities

I would continue to do what I do and on a bigger scale. And add on free art education for any child pre-k through 12.
I’d find any and all groups supporting voter rights and the end of gerrymandering and voter suppression.
I’d start education funds for all my nieces, nephews, friends kids—they can use the funds for any educational needs at any age, and all of them would be funded through trade school/college age.
I’d fund our local animal shelter and provide food and medical care to all foster pets.
For me personally, I think I might travel but not too much. I love where I am, but seeing things I couldn’t really otherwise afford (i.e. month long vacations) might be on my list. We would likely get to a summer vacation somewhere warmer and Sandy!
Crafty wise, I think I would have a professional come in and organize for me. Help me set up my space the way the flow works best.

Career wise I would RETIRE! Buy a new house, travel, house at the beach. I’d probably create a company for each of my kids to run, something with animals for my youngest, not sure about the oldest. Share with my fam, help out some needy folks.

I don't think I would work since I've never had a career. But DH would teach. Preferably at the college level. That's his dream job. He'd have to find a school close to a beach cause I'm moving someplace warm.

Well, I’m retired, so work wise nothing would change. But, I’d travel a lot more to more exotic and faraway places. And I’d fly first class to get there But honestly, I’d give away/set up trusts and endowments for all but about 10-15M, build a home that perfectly suits me (light-filled, single story, 2 bedrooms with an office and sunroom) in a location closer to my son, and just travel to my heart’s content.

I would start an intentional living community for Black people to come live in peace. Maybe in Belize or Guatemala. Teach people how to retire early and be financially independent from systems that don’t mean them well.
I’d also love to be a hotelier or have a zero waste store.

I love the cafe idea.
We have always talked about how they're needs to be a night time Cafe. All ours close at 7. We would call it Just Desserts. We wild have the usual coffee shop drinks plus wine and desserts to choose from. Soft lighting and calming music & a fireplace. Cozy chairs to sit in to read or talk.
Also a coffee shop across the street from the local high school that hires hs kids to work there. Free internet and open before & after school. A safe place for the kids to go.
The most important thing we would do is set up college/education accounts for all 11 of our nieces and nephews and probably for a few friends kids as well.
Then travel. Lots and lots of travel.

I would become a professional philanthropist. Start a foundation and give all but 100 million away. This. I'd take care of my family and then invest the rest. Give all the earnings away each year, keep the capital invested and earning more for the future. There are so many places that need help!

I would buy a giant warehouse with AC and heating and all the necessary amenities for all the animal rescues in town to bring their adoptable animals, so that anyone one that was looking, could come to one location and see all. And so that the animals could be comfortable too.
I have other thoughts, but that would be one of the first.
