So I understand when the phrase is used regarding the GOP - at least the God, guns & greed part.
What I don't understand is the "gays" as part of that.
I take the phrase to mean "we are all about God, yay guns" but they are not "yay gays" - so I don't quite understand that part.
Or am I totally taking in the wrong way?

That they are usually very vocal about being against gays. That they typically run on a platform that explicitly includes wording that they are against gay rights and gay marriage, along with being pro-guns and pro-legislating religion. And people who vote GOP will often say that they vote for GOP candidates based on their stances on gays, guns and religion. So, gays, gun and G-d are mentioned equally often by many of the GOP leaders and voters even though it is anti-gay and pro-guns and pro-G-d.

If they can stomach gays being allowed to live at all (which not all can) then it's "We don't want to SEE it!!" i.e., We don't want sex ed to include discussions of homosexuality, transgender people. We don't want to have to sell things to teh gayz We don't want to have to hire teh gayz We don't want to have to rent our AirBnB to teh gayz We don't want cartoons on TV to have 2 moms in a frame (Arthur - seriously) etc.

In the broadest of terms, I have always interpreted "Guns,God,Greed & Gays" as follows:
These are the "hot, single topic issues" that many, many people vote Republican. I've voted in something like 11 Presidential Elections and these are the major "talking point" issues that get the base riled up.
God - Republicans often campaign of promoting "Freedom of Religion". They promise not to take away you "right to practice your religion". (Insert big eye roll here. I'm not familiar with any liberal that wants to "take away" your religion.) Republicans often promise to put religion back in public schools.
Also God/Religion - Republican campaign on promising to "protect the unborn". ie, ban abortions. Democrats are pro-choice. It's a woman's body and she has the right to make decisions regarding it. No, we are not advocating "killing babies". That's just inflammatory rhetoric preached from the pulpit and campaign trail.
Gay - Goes back to God/Religion. "The bible says...is always a nice neat way of pulling in potential voters. It show how good of a "christian" a candidate is. Republicans love pro-bible rhetoric - often countered with an appalling examples of what heathens Democrats are, like "baby killers, homo loving, pedophiles". Once again anti-gay because, well, "it's in the bible".
Guns - BECAUSE HILLARY IS GOING TO TAKE YOUR GUNS AWAY!!!! Yes, the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution, part of the Bill of Rights, covers an individuals "right" to own guns. To this day scholars disagree about the meaning and intention behind the Second Amendment. And it's never been about taking guns away and much more about "gun regulation" - laws or policies that regulate the manufacture, sale, transfer, possession, modification, or use of firearms. But hey, that's not as catchy as "They're going to take your guns away!" (Insert yet another eye roll.)
Greed - There has long been a perception that Wall Street/Stocks favor a Republican president. Historically, that's little to no indication that is true. But that's a whole 'nuther topic. More important is the Republican stance of lowering taxes for big business. Trickle down economics, Reaganmonics, whatever you want to call it. Trump really promoted the idea that cutting taxes to big corporations would result in "big beautiful jobs with great pay". Voters loved that! Yeah. Still waiting. All the while, the rich got richer. Republicans love the chant "It's MY money, I earned it and I should get to keep it!" This is in response to "Share our Wealth program and Second New Deal" of the 1930's that included the Social programs of Social Security Act, the Works Progress Administration, the National Labor Relations Board, Aid to Dependent Children, and the Wealth Tax Act of 1935. Government programs that provide assistance to individuals and families in need. The oh so lovely Republicans have turned "Social Welfare" into a dirty word(s) (ie, aka Living off the teet of the government"). Lazy, good for nothing Dems are taking THEIR money. Meanwhile, wealthy families and their portfolios are continuing to benefit from big business tax cuts. Dems believe in lending a hand to all people - Repubs believe in cutting them off at the knees.
Donald Trump hit all the right notes to get elected president once. God help us if it ever happens again.
