They are losing their grip that they only think they had! Panic!

I think the problem is that Trump supporters are living an alternate reality. The believe his lies, Republicans refuse to call Trump out on his lies and other Republicans objecting to the electoral college give all of it legitimacy. Their beliefs are only reinforced on Fox, or worse, OAN or NewsMax. And what they see on social media supports their reality, too. They truly believe they were being patriotic, taking back an election that was stolen from them. I have no idea how Biden can unite the country when 30% are living in an alternate reality.

My hope is behind the fact that his approval has sharply dropped with Republicans. Psychologically, that is pretty good.

It is extremely hard to get people to shift their opinions when they have been approving of action after action after action for 5 years now (counting campaigning throughout all of 2016).

It is called the foot-in-the-door technique and how people like Jim Jones groom followers to take that step to approve of and literally drink the cyanide-laced Kool-aid. The more actions that his followers approved of over the years, the harder psychologically it is for them to do an about-face and disapprove.

Psychologically, it is easy for those of us who have been disgusted for years to add this to our list of grievances. For Republicans, many who supported him earlier, it is much harder to shift to anger and disgust.

Just as there are Never Trumper Republicans, there will always be a few Trump-supporting Democrats.

I know working-class Democrats who have always been Democrats, because labor, who nevertheless have always been otherwise kind of conservative-leaning. And I bet there are pockets of old-time Southern Democrats who never officially left the party when everyone else switched to Republican.
