If you have /had Lymes disease did you / would you get the Covid19 vaccine?
I have a dear relative ( age 55) who is currently treating for Lyme disease. She has been treating for over a year as it was determined she's probably had Lyme for over 30 years and it was undiagnosed. She just got off a 9 month antibiotic regimen and was told that her "numbers had all improved".
My relative is eligible for a vaccine now and can't decide if she should or shouldn't have it. The doctor's nurse who is treating her told her they are not comfortable with the vaccine yet and the doctor is not getting the vaccine themselves.
So I'm curious if any others with Lymes had an opinion or information. I couldn't find much info online. TIA
UPDATE 2/3/20: So my relative is scheduled to get her vaccine today. Please keep your fingers crossed that all goes well for her! She's been a wreck trying to decide if she should or shouldn't get vaccinated. The whole family has been discussing pros and cons with her for weeks and we finally convinced her to make the appointment. My relative did get to talk with her Lymes doctor directly and did feel better afterwards. The doctor explained that she didn't want to make a blanket statement that all her patients should get the vaccine - She wanted each patient to evaluate their own situation and the risks. In my relative's case, the doctor felt the benefits would outweigh the risks. We've also convinced my relative to see a counselor about all the anxiety COVID has caused her.

Do they not want them to get it because of their feeling on the vaccine or because it has a known reaction with Lyme's disease? Because that is a big difference.

The doctors office did not state any known reaction to Lymes. Just that "no one in our office is going to get one". They implied that there wasn't enough information yet.

I, personally, think it is irresponsible of the nurse or doctor to encourage people not to get the vaccine. What are the potential consequences if a person with Lyme gets coronavirus?
I don’t have Lyme but I do have an autoimmune disease. My doctors are all encouraging me to get the vaccine as soon as I am offered it.

It's disappointing that a doc is discouraging his patients from getting the vaccine. There is actually a ton of research. This vaccine has been in the works since the early 90s for SARS1, it just had to be modified to SARS2. My Aunt has Lyme's and she received the vaccine two weeks ago. No issues. I got the vaccine last week and nothing but a tender arm for a few hours.

I'm pissed that her doctor' office won't recommend the vaccine. I was hoping to hear some encouraging stories so I could convince her to get the vaccine. Me and some other family members keep telling her it will be ok, but her anxiety is getting the best of her. She works with the public nearly everyday and comes in contact with so many different people daily. I feel she needs the protection of the vaccine.

To me the fact that a doctor and his entire office is telling their patients not to get the vaccine, that they won't be getting it, is horrible and potentially deadly medical advice. Would your aunt be willing to get a second opinion from another doctor? I'm so very sorry you are in this position. How would you feel about reporting that doctor to the County Medical board and telling them what he is telling his patients about the Covid vaccine?

And suggesting to your aunt she might want to consider changing doctors She struggled with her symptoms for years and was misdiagnosed with fibro before she found this Lyme Specialist. This doctor has helped her tremendously so she's hesitant to go anywhere else. Her previous family doc and a rheumatologist were no help with her condition. This doc is focusing on diet, supplements and antibiotic treatment which seem to bring her a lot of relief.

I can't even fathom going to a Dr, or a Dr's office where they are saying such things publically to their pts. they are highly recommending people with auto immune diseases to get the vaccine. This is why we are in the position we are in..because of people like that. People who are suppose to know better. SMH

My hubs has a tick disease, Alpha Gal, not Lyme, but there's a risk of anaphylaxis with the shot and he's scheduled to get it tomorrow.

I have no specific lyme disease experience, but I am ticked that an entire doctor's office is advising against the vaccine for no specific reason.

I disagree with the doctor's advice, but it begins to make sense knowing the office uses alternative treatments for Lyme that are not typically endorsed by mainstream medicine, e.g. extended courses of antibiotics, which have been successful with intractable cases. I can see where that philosophy can venture near anti-vax.

I totally agree - I'm trying hard to convince her to just get the damn shot already!

New doctor. It is one thing if there are issues with the condition and the vaccine, but not this

Lyme doctors in my experience are kind of fringey weirdos with alternative medicine leanings. It doesn’t surprise me that they would also be anti-VAX.
I would be much more concerned about getting Covid with Lyme disease then I would be about getting the vaccination with Lyme disease.

I can see that but maybe explain to her that this doctor that she has is a doctor that is a specialist for Lyme disease but he isn't a specialist for Covid disease. Those specialists developed this vaccine and it's safe even for Lyme patients. What's the alternative? That she gets Covid? There is now a strain of Covid that is 70% easier to catch and it's making it's way around the USA. It's already in 20 states! It's called B.1.1.7 It's in Massachusetts, Wyoming, Louisiana, Michigan, Oregon, Illinois, Utah, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Maryland, Indiana, Minnesota, Connecticut, Texas, Pennsylvania, Georgia, New York, Florida, California, and Colorado.
