Apparently the filibuster is going to become a big issue. Should it be eliminated? Maybe keep it with limitations?
My thinking is that every bill should come to the floor for a vote. Just because the other side or one person doesn’t like it is no reason to stop a vote from happening. Yes I know it opens the door to potentially bad bills being passed and signed into law.
But then maybe that’s what needed to get the voter to care more about who they elect. And get those stay at home and third party voters engaged in actually forming the government they want instead of only periodically making an appearance.

This would not be the case if both sides would work together honestly regardless who was the majority and who was the minority.
These individuals are elected to run a government that is for all people not just those in blue states or in red states.

Eliminating the filibuster has a way of coming back to bite the minority party in the ass. Trump would never have gotten so many federal judges appointed if Harry Reid hadn’t killed the filibuster in 2013. Schumer argued against it then and said in 2017 he wished they hadn’t done it, now he’s in favor of it simply because his party is the majority. That may not be the case in 2022 and then he’ll have to live with it.
Allowing either party to have that much control is bad for the country and FTR I’d feel the same if the republicans were trying to do it.

And why did Harry Reid kill the filibuster at that time? Because Mitch McConnell was filibustering everything.
And it was because of a combination of the filibuster employed by the right and them taking the majority and ignoring President Obama’s picks that there were plenty of vacancies to be filled after President Obama left office.
So while the conservatives are slapping themselves on the back because they got so many judges appointed, they in fact should be ashamed because it was done by cheating.
This idea that one has to win by any means possible by politicians will ultimately be a contributing factor to the downfall of this country.

McConnell’s only goal is to reinforce that Democrats can’t govern so that the GOP can win seats in the midterms. So he needs the Democrats unable to pass legislation. Definitely unable to pass legislation that will actually help people, because then people might start realizing that one side is actually trying to help people and not just themselves.
Would it be nice to live in a world where we could keep the filibuster? Sure, but that is not where we are right now. And people need help now, worrying what might happen in the future is a luxury we can no longer afford. It sucks when idealism has to take a back seat to pragmatism, but the GOP has years to demonstrate “good faith” opposition and it ended up in insurrection at the Capitol.
If Americans continue to let the GOP play these games, and insist Democrats must acquiesce while the GOP can obstruct and disrupt with no accountability or consequence, then the die for this country’s future is cast, and the insurrection will be only the prologue.

The fact that McConnell wants it to live should bet an indication how badly we need to kill it. For the next two years at least, whatever Mitch wants we should want the opposite.

The Republicans must really believe that they couldn't win on their own merits, otherwise they wouldn't be so invested in lying, stealing, cheating, and just being horrible people.
