I picked use shredding service. I am also posting without read the other replies first, which I try not to do. So apologies if I am repeating things that have been suggested many times.
Every small unit i have tried is fine if you keep caught up and just need to do little piles at a time. But they all seem to over heat if you try to do too many or use it too long at one time.
What I actually would do is just collect it until spring when my credit union (typically) has 3 “shredfest”s. You can bring your documents to their parking lot and they have mobile shredding units/trucks there. You can watch them shred your stuff if you feel you need to...but it is secure and they shred it all there and then.

do you have access to an 8 year old? my neighbors son comes over on thursdays to shred all of my things in the garage. He thinks its the funnest thing in the world (and has clearly been stuck at home with his brothers too long ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/nLEEDztHkWCycXMmLHmo.jpg) ) ![:yeahthat:](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/yrGoHMAelQz8f2Qt0sjb.jpg) LOL I pay my 10yo five bucks to sit and run the stuff through it! BUT— my stack doesn’t ever get that high anymore because as the stuff comes in I open it all up and go through it immediately. If it’s a credit application type thing, usually there are only 2-3 small spots that have the name and a “reservation number” or something similar so I will rip those small pieces off and throw the rest that doesn’t have sensitive information on it in the regular recycling that gets picked up every other week. So now instead of having a 3’ stack of paper and envelopes, I have a little box with pieces of paper the size of address labels that need to get shredded. Another alternative would be to get one of those self inking security block out rolling stamps. You can just roll that over the sensitive parts to make them illegible and then throw the whole thing in the regular recycling.

Any chance you have a fireplace or fire pit? That would be cheapest and easiest way (though you wouldn’t want to do it all at once, that’s be a lot of smoke and ash). Outside burning is illegal and while I have a fireplace I never use it. The lady we bought our fireplace from said to never, never EVER burn paper in the fireplace. It can lead to a chimney fire!

I would check the cost, and if it was within budget I would do the shredding service. We have bought a few shredders over the years, and I always seem to jam them! I only use half the amount the instructions say you can use at once, etc. but it still jams. I am trying to stay on top of it now so I don't get a big pile to shred. But I should have used a service with our last pile.

It would be worth my time to just pay to use a shredding service this time for so much.
Then buy a shredder to maintain once you are down to zero again.
