More votes for The Jolly Christmas Postman, The Night Before Christmas and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Some my DD (4) really enjoyed/enjoys are: The Best Christmas Ever by Marni McGee (bought this for both DD and her same aged cousin) Snowmen at Christmas by Caralyn Buehner (bought for DD and her cousin) Christmas is Here! Fisher Price lift the flaps book -- she LOVES all of the FP flap books Elmo's Merry Christmas Sesame Street lift the flaps book Max's Christmas by Rosemary Wells I'm sure I'm forgetting some. I had several Christmas story books in my collection of illustration and pop-up books that I used for reference when I was in art school, and since DD came along more have been added. A couple years ago when she started to really "get" the whole wrapped presents thing, I started a fun little tradition with her where I wrap up all of her Christmas stories with wrapping paper and put them in a basket by the tree. Depending on how many books we have, we let her pick one book out of the basket every night to unwrap and read before bed up through Christmas Eve. So, if we had 12, we would start on the 12th and do one a night until Christmas, etc. I bought a bunch of the little dollar store/Target $1 board books to beef up the collection a little at first, but will eventually swap those out with books that have more of a story over time. She also gets holiday books from her Grammas and those get added to the collection too so we're getting close to having enough for the whole 24 days. What is nice about this is that she gets the fun of "unwrapping" something and as a result she's much happier leaving the real presents alone since things start showing up at the house from family and friends around the middle of the month and we put that stuff under the tree. Now that I'm thinking about it, when we get to the point where we don't need the little kid holiday board books anymore, I think it would be fun to wrap those up in Christmas gift wrap and stick them into the Little Free Library at the ECFE for other little kids to enjoy. It would be a great way to help teach her how to give and to anonymously pay it forward. Oh yes I'm thinking of doing the same thing by wrapping them! So fun! And I agree with those Little People flap books - he loooooves those. I need to hunt down the Christmas one! And maybe that Elmo one.

I have seen a few I love posted already but I have to add, Olive the other reindeer, Small One, and the Tale of the 3 Trees. The last one is not a "christmas" book but it has a christmas element and we always seem to read it at Christmas.

My favorite is The Nativity, illustrated by Julie Vivas. It's mostly a picture book using the King James Version of the nativity story. The NativitySorry this is OT, but I love Julie Vivas! She also illustrated Wilfred Gordon McDonald Partridge which is probably my all-time favorite children's book.

We have a ton of Christmas books - I've weeded them out several times and we still have a ton. My mum sent one (or more) per child every year for St Nicholas Day...she's still sending for Annabelle. Our favourites are: A Pussycat's Christmas by Margaret Wise Brown A is For Angel Twas the Night before Christmas Tomie De Paola's Christmas books - Legend of the Poinsetta and Merry Christmas Strega Nona among others and of course, various Nativity stories Advent not Christmas but The Advent Book www.amazon.com/Advent-Book-Jack-Stockman/dp/1581345313/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1415911881&sr=1-2&keywords=The+Advent+bookWe also love for Christmas (and Lent/Easter) the various Arch books - they are Lutheran, I believe, but I've never come across anything in them that I wasn't comfortable with as a Catholic.

I love this thread I am no help though, because all my Christmas books are in a box in the garage and I can't remember the names of our favorites! I am just horrible with remembering titles of books/movies/etc. I started a tradition for our family a few years ago. I wrap up each Christmas book individually and every night when the kids do the advent calendar, they get to pick a book for us to read together. They have a fun time trying to guess which ones are which, while wrapped up, to try and find their absolute favorites I collected all of mine from thrift stores, and each year I weed out some that we didn't like as much, and try to find a few new ones for the next year. I am going to write down some of the suggestions from this thread and try to find some next time I go thrifting

There are some great suggestions here! I have a new grandson and will be buying a bunch of these books. Two years ago, while shopping with my 25 year old DD, I saw her look lovingly at a beautifully illustrated book about the Nutcracker Ballet...geared for older children but still a child's book. I bought it for her and decided to start a collection in hopes of future grandbabies...little did I know that by the next Christmas, my son and DIL would be expecting. So, now I'll be buying beautiful Christmas books in duplicate!

Not a book suggestion but I did want to share an idea. I don't have children but I do have nieces and nephews. Several years ago I did an audio tape of my parents reading "The Night Before Christmas" and gave it to my two step sisters. I kept a copy myself. That was many years before we all had smart phones with video. Video would work even better. Keep that recording. Someday it will become priceless.

I don't remember favourite Christmas books from quite that age, but from 4 onward I loved 'The Magic Carousel'. It is no longer in print, but a few years ago I bought a copy from ebay. My mom was a teacher and used to read it to her classes.
It is about two sisters in NYC who ride the carousel in Central Park at Christmas time, and the horses come to life and they gallop through the city. The illustrations are unique and memorable (for me anyways).
I look forward every year to reading it again and having it on display.

My girls always loved the Sandra Boynton books at that age. Bonus - they are not annoying for parents to read over and over.
Bob and 6 More Christmas Stories is STILL a favorite. Now they understand the humor in the poems and recite a couple of them all year...
"I have a tiny reindeer, he says his name is Bob. He likes to entertain me, he says it is his job. ... ... My sister says there's no such thing as tiny reindeer but why would Bob pretend?"
Both of my kids can quote this entire poem verbatim.
"I need a box, a really big box..." We've done the unwrap a book a night for years, even though now they don't enjoy it as much but BOB is always one of the first ones they fight to open.
Karen Katz also has some fun age-appropriate board book and lift-the-flap books that he might enjoy.

At my daughters school you can volunteer to read Christmas books to the classes so I did.
There was one the librarian have me about Chrostmas Sweaters. I happen to LOVE Christmas sweaters and read that to thre class.
It was an excellent book! BUT I almost started crying in the middle of it because it was a very sentimental book!
I was a mess inside! I only think my kid knew I was on the verge of tears. LOL :-)
So watch for one about Christmas sweaters. It's a good one!

I wonder of these are the books my kids had, too. My inlaws are Lutheran and would always give the kids books they bought through the church. They were really wonderful, and mostly just Christian (we are catholic). They were a story about 3? Mice and there was a Christmas book, an Easter book, and (I think) an ordinary time book. There were cassette tapes with them as well. They came in a little blue bag that zipped shut. I gave the set away, but it was hard to do! Hopefully I can find it again when I'm a grandma.

Ok- sorry it took a while to get back. Our grandson still loves trains at 4! And Curious George as well. How about a nice version of "the little Engine that could? " it's not Christmas specifically but the engine is trying to get over the mountain to deliver toys to the boys and girls that live on the other side. It was written a long time ago ,but I'm pretty sure it's available on Amazon now. There are Curious George themed books that are short. We don't have a Christmas one, but it's so easy to shop online via Amazon. It's like going to books in print

I just went through our Christmas books and it's a sad little pile I really want to add some great ones this year. What are your family's faves? DS is 2.5, so bonus points to you if you point out the ones they loved at that age! UPDATE Look what I found today at our (amazing!) used book store: That (hardback!) Mr. Willowby's Christmas was only $2 and it looks brand new! I was so excited when I found it. Not pictured is 12 Bugs of Christmas. I forgot that was recommended here as well. Soooo cute! Not on your list but I also bought a vintage Frosty the Snowman book, Thomas's Christmas Delivery (Thomas the Train), Curious George Christmas Countdown, and the Gingerbread Man (it's a touch & feel book & super cute) there today too. Score! After I got home, I placed an order for more that we wanted from thriftbooks.com (side note: If you've never ordered from them, you should! Shipping is included and the books are super reasonable! Most of these I'm getting for $2.50 each shipped with their multi item discount and a coupon code. PM me your email if you want to order and I'll send you a 15% off coupon that's good if you order in next 2 weeks. I always order them in "good" condition or better and have never been disappointed). From Thrift Books we have coming: Who's Coming to our House Bob: and 6 More Christmas Stories Bear Stays Up for Christmas Christmastime is Here! (Little People lift flap book) Elmo's Merry Christmas (lift the flap) Snowmen at Night I'm still on the hunt for a few more that I'd like to buy used. Some are better for when he's a little older so no rush... Polar Express, Auntie Claus, Snowmen at Christmas, etc. Thanks again for your suggestions! I got a TON of awesome Christmas books used today for probably the price of two new hardback ones at Barnes & Noble. Very, very happy about that! Just ordered from Thriftbooks. Thanks for the recommendation! I have a home daycare plus 8 grandbabies. I spend a fortune on books!

I'm so glad you were able to find some fun new books! DD is in preschool this year and her class participates in the Scholastic Book Club so I'll be revisiting this thread again before I put in our next order. The books are all softcover so they are usually only a couple dollars each plus her teachers get credit from our orders to help buy books for the classroom, so that's cool too.
