Top loader only for sure. That is the only thing I am adamant about. My cousin has one that is GE that she loves. Even has a bloody option. I did mention my husband is home all. The. Damn. Time didn't I? Any thoughts on that brand? We could pick one of those up today. Skip the GE. They just arent what they used to be. And lol about bloody and dh being home all the time!

I'm really happy with my Samsung top-loader, no agitator. It even sings to me when it's done Oh god, our dryer does that and I wish to holy hell it didn’t. Mostly because I run the dryer at night. I guess I won’t mind the washer singing at me. the washer singing is MUCH nicer than my dryer which buzzes loudly but not melodiously

Let me preface this by admitting that I have no interest in comparative shopping. Usually I get an idea of features and quality by reading the latest Consumer Reports report on the specific appliance, and then just buy whatever is on sale at Costco. That said, I had to buy a new set in December 2019. I chose a Samsung top-loading (no agitator) set. Front-loaders freak me out a bit. Samsung admittedly didn’t get great reviews, but my set has been trouble-free. I’m still a little intimidated (my old set was 20+ years old, too) but we get along fine. One warning about these new top-loaders ... they are very, very deep. I had to buy long-handled tongs to be able to reach little kid socks stuck on the bottom. Truthfully, I very rarely need them, but once in a while, they’re a lifesaver. If you’re taller than I am, maybe you’ll be fine. ETA things do wash differently in the no-agitator machines. They tend to roll up into little balls. I take some time transferring things to the dryer, and make sure everything is uncrumpled and fluffed a little before drying. On the other hand, I am now able to wash my large comforters and sleeping bags in my home washer. That’s worth a lot to me. I broke an agitator years ago washing a king-size comforter, so I just stopped washing big things in the machine after that. My new washer is a top loader and like you said it is deep...and I am short. I had to put a step stool in front of it to stand on to reach the bottom of the tub. When the step stool isn't there I have to lift up my boob so that I don't squish it, lay on the edge of the machine with my feet not touching the floor to get the small items in the bottom of the tub.

I am sure to be in the minority here, but I have a front loader and LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT. I have NEVER (truly, not just saying it) NEVER had odors or mold or anything like that. The door has a little magnet that holds it slightly open when not in use so it always dries out very well. I can put a king sized comforter in there with no problem. The first one I had was a Kenmore Elite and was perfect, lasted 14 years. The current one is an LG and it's been great, the only one complaint is occasionally it is a little loud when it spins - but once the load is balanced enough it is fine. So there ya go. My two cents!! My Kenmore Elite front loader is going on 9 years old, and I LOVE it! I have not had problems with odors, either, UNLESS I forget to clean out the drain. There is a drain opening on the front with a filter that catches all the little bits of debris such as hair ties and paper clips that shouldn't make their way to the septic tank. I drain the line, pull out the trap, and give it a wipe--all is well.
My top loader HE that I had before we moved had terrible problems with odors. It also had a drain line that needed to be cleaned, but it was located in the bottom back of the machine--serious design flaw! I couldn't pull it out to clean it and suffered through several years of fighting the odor with bleach or vinegar, but no matter what, the smell was back in a short while. If I had known about the drain issues before I bought it, I never would have chosen that model.
So overall, I am MUCH happier with my front loader, and it was a life-saver for my SIL when she lived with us before she passed in 2014. She was able to do her own laundry (independence was very important to her) which would have been impossible with a top loader due to her MS. She was able to both wash and fold from a seated position.

I'm in the minority, but I love my front loading Samsung washer and dryer set. I've had them 7 yrs now with no issues. We stacked ours in the garage. This is my 2nd set of front loading (Maytag was 1st set & had them over 14 yrs), and I've never had the 'stinky' issue some mention, but since day one I've always left the washer door ajar a bit my putting an old sock tied into a large knot in the door so it doesn't seal shut. It's large--I'm able to put my queen size comforter in there to wash and have never had any problems. I read a lot of posts where people have issues with their front loaders, but I never have had any problems.

Get the tongs. It’s better than falling head first into the washer. Or you could just throw all of those small things into mesh bags which would be much easier to grab. I have about four of them now and I put all of my kid’s socks and undies in them. I have a front loader that is equally difficult to get the small things out of when they’re stuck to the back of the drum. Works like a charm. And to answer the question in the OP, I will *NEVER* have another front loader. Even though I leave all the compartments open to dry out between uses and run white vinegar through it occasionally, it has a filter that gets really disgusting with gross black gunk. (And yes, I clean that thing out regularly and have to make VERY sure that the filter gets screwed back in exactly right and exactly tight enough so I don’t flood my house.) Due to that the washer does occasionally stink because the water never completely drains at the bottom of the drum and at the seal. My next washer will definitely be a top loader.

One thing to consider before you decide. A lot of appliances are on serious back-order right now. We wanted a new cooktop and over-the- cooktop microwave. They took several months to arrive after we ordered them. Luckily our old ones were still working. We have a Kenmore top-load no agitator that I like. I'm just under 5'4" and I can reach the bottom if I stand on my tip-toes. My friend who owns laundromats swears by Speed Queen but I think they are a little pricier because they last forever. And I believe they are a bit smaller than most washers. SweetieBsMom could probably give details.

We got a top loading Samsung and husband installed it yesterday. So far so good! Did the load that killed my original machine and it was quiet and everything came out great! I am hoping to see a small improvement in our water bill since it is HE. I hate wasting water.
Granted, I did just one load, but I like the tray for laundry detergent. I always used to put it in the drum and then run some water over it before adding clothes, it is a simple thing, but nice to have the tray to disperse it with the water.

I bought a top loading, no agitator Samsung at an estate sale for $100. It’s probably about 4 years old, in the fall. I LOVE it! I bought a new Samsung dryer and love it as well.

I have 1 large comforter, and if I need it cleaned, I’ll bring it to the cleaner. I don’t use it very often.

I just recently replaced mine. I had a front loader for years. The thing always looked moldy to me. This time top loader with an agitator. Cheapest one I could find lol. Seems to work fine but it is a little louder than I would like. Oh, well I won't forget the clothes when they are done.

Do you have kids? We have an agitator because they clean dirtier clothes better and I had two teenage boys in sports at the time.
Ours is an GE. Had it for about 6 years. Still going string...knock on wood.
Eta: Ours is pretty basic. It has a water sensor but I can also choose the water level

We replaced our front loader last summer when it started leaking because the gasket tore. If I could have found a Fisher & Paykel top loading machine I would have bought one (had one years ago in WA and LOVED it). My priority was getting a new machine into the house as quickly as possible, so we went with an energy efficient LG top loader with no agitator. I love it.

Our 22 year old machine died a couple of years ago and I was so sad.
Machines with agitators are hard to find.
I ended up getting a top loading LG set (no agitator) from Costco that that I like but don't love.
The pros:
- huge capacity; I can comfortably wash a king size comforter;
- I can add extra water to a load.
The cons:
- I can't trust the machine to properly sense the size of the load and usually need to add water so that my clothes is fully submerged;
- The washer and dryer both take way longer than my old set and both my electric and gas bills have gone up (so much for Energy saving);
- I don't think it cleans as well with no agitator (in fact, I know it doesn't. I wash my kids' socks in lingerie bags and add these plastic agitator balls I got on Amazon because their socks were coming out dirty);
- The warm and hot cycles are neither. The water doesn't come out hot and the guy who installed the machines said it's a function of the energy saving and there's nothing we can do.
I miss my old appliances. I'm barely 5'0" and I keep tongs and a step ladder in my laundry room so I can reach the bottom of the washer. Oddly enough, this is one of the things I find least annoying about the whole deal.

I prefer front loaders because I'm 5'tall and it's hard to reach the bottom of top loaders for me. My previous set was a Whirlpool and lasted 12 years. The set before that was Maytag and we had problems with the washer. My current set is an LG. I love the steam feature in the dryer!

When my original (22 year old) machines died a couple of years ago I replaced with a top loader Speed Queen. I love it, it’s simple and works well. At our lake house, we have an LG front loader left by the previous owners, it is now about 4-5 years old. I HATE it. I am a runner and am used to being able to SOAK my gross running clothes for a while before running the rest of the cycle. Can’t do that in a front loading HE machine! If you soak laundry for any reason, stick to a top loader. Good luck!

My last 3 washers (three different houses) have all been front loading, no problems, no stink, no leaks, etc. Whirlpool Cabriolet, all three of them. The last top loader I bought had no agitator and I hated that thing. It was always showing unbalanced load, would have to spin it out, it was a pain in the ass. And I'm too short to easily reach the bottom. I don't miss that thing at all. I gave it away.

We just bought a new set a few months ago. We bought Whirlpool. That's all I've ever owned. Our last one didn't have an agitator. This one does. I think the clothes get cleaner with the agitator. I'll only buy a top loader. I've heard too many horror stories about the smell on front loaders.

I think my washer JUST died. Or is very sick. I put a load in before the super bowl. Went to go get it hours later and realized it was still agitating. Except it was on drain. And kind of agitating back and forth and I smelled a burning smell (like a burned out motor—not a fire.) I just turned it off and walked away. I’ll deal with it tomorrow.

Don’t buy Samsung! They are awful! I tried to return them the 2nd day I had them and they wouldn’t let me. Had a service guy come and he was a certified Samsung guy and he even said they are terrible machines!
