I just got off a chat with customer service. I always feel awkward when it comes time to disconnect. Do you say bye and wait for them to say bye? Do you say bye and just disconnect without waiting for them to respond? And it seems like they never disconnect first. I don't know what the proper "etiquette" is. LOL! When you talk in real life, you get cues on when to leave the conversation, but it is harder on the internet. So, when do you disconnect the chat?

Avoiding these sorts of conundrums is exactly why I use the online chat tool wherever possible, rather than speaking to an agent. I say thanks and goodbye, and then disconnect immediately.

They usually seem to ask if there's anything else they can help you with. So I say, nope, thanks, bye and disconnect.

If my issue has been resolved, I say thank you and exit if it's online. If it's over the phone, I tell them thank you which is usually followed by "is there anything else I can do for you today?" I say no, thank you and hang up. DH waits for them to disconnect first. Dude, they have other people to get to, hang up!

I was once in a Bye Bye off with someone with my credit card. I was on my earbuds and I couldn't get them to disconnect.
I said a few words to my earbuds and heard, hello? I was so embarrassed. I asked hello and they said yes, can I help you. Finally she told me that she couldn't disconnect first.
By this time I found my phone and asked if I should say yes, bye and disconnect she said yes you have a great day, bye bye so I bye byed.

I used to work in a call center... a loong time ago....
We could not hang up 1st... there is physically no way to hang up.. its thru the computer and it starts the call and the computer ends the call when you hang up... there isnt a #phone#...
We also could not stop trying to sell until after the 3rd no... then we could say thank you have a good day... but before the 3rd no we had to keep giving you information about why you really wanted the service...
Also not interested does not equal no...
So if ur done just say bye n hang up...
If its a robo call... just hang up.. if ur not interested... dont try to be nice... just hang up..

So if I answer a spam call and don’t hang up on them, are they unable to disconnect? That seems like a great way to keep them from scamming someone.

I'm off the linr as soon as I've established what I wanted to..."thanks - bye" and hang up. I'm polite, but I'm not wasting any more time on the phone or in a chat window than I have to, once my issue has been addressed I'm outta there.

These are business calls - not social calls. Conclude your business, utter some little wrap up phrase, say thank you and hang up.

I think as the customer, I am actually the one in control (ha ha!). Like others, I am the one that will say thank you, buh bye. (Reading all these buh byes, reminds me of the SNL skit when people are getting off the plane) SNL Total Bastard Airlines

Its been more then 20 years since I did this job... so im sure with technology and the way computers work things are not the same... but when i did it then yes, if you didnt hang up and left ur phone sitting for 30 mins... then i sat on the phone for 30 mins... we only had the ability to mute our side so you couldn't hear us in the background... It was an automated robot call... as soon as you answered i would unmute and start my script... and i had redirects and follows for everything you say... until you say NO 3 times... And for us not interested was not a no... so i kept going until you finally hung up on me... a lot of people try to be nice and gracious... but my job was to keep pushing... i got randomly monitored.. and all calls were recorded so any could be pulled up... if i didn't say certain things.. i would get penalized... It really and truly is better for the person calling you to just be hung up on... sounds rude... but just say not interested and click off... Full disclosure: I sold caller id for GTE wayyyy back when it was 1st created... it was actually pretty easy to sell once people learned about it... but lots of people were skeptical about the little id boxes u had to hook to ur phone... i also got bonuses of i got u to sign up for caller id with call waiting and call forwarding... lol.. is that a blast from the past?

I usually wait for that final, “Is there anything else I can do for you today?” Nope, thanks, have a great day/night *end chat*

Unless it is a Chewy representative, I just type bye and disconnect. It saves the other person from having to respond again and they can connect with the next person faster.

Then the lady asked what kind of dogs I had and shared a picture. Two weeks later, I had two 6 x 6 canvases that were painted of my dogs sent to me with a thank you. I was cancelling my future orders and got two paintings.

I prefer it to "no problem." I would actually prefer that they have a good 5 responses they could use so it didn't seem so canned.

Like every bit of free will and personality has been checked at the door.

As someone who talks to customers all day on the phone, I can say that I whind down the conversation with thanks so much for being a loyal customer. You have a good day. And then the customer says..... Thanks, bye. And I say goodbye and disconnect.

A nice Midwestern "thank you for your help" followed by something along the lines of hoping they have a great day, goodbye! (these southerners are really rubbing off on me, they're just so polite), then hang up.
PA me would have said Thank you and hung up immediately. No time for extraneous niceties.

Coming from the perspective of a customer service rep, I've always been taught that you let the customer hang up first. So feel free and confident to just say thank you, maybe add a "have a great day" if they gave you good service, and then hang up.
