I'm sorry for him, and for his family. But... CNN has been talking about this accident -- complete with expert talking heads and speculation this and speculation that and blah blah blah... for almost ONE HOUR! I'm neutral about Tiger Woods because I don't know much about him and I hate golf anyway... But is this really worth a non-stop hour of CNN time when we're in the middle of a pandemic? Personally I want to hear from the doctors about today's vaccines and covid cases and Senate hearings and the situation in Myanmar and Malaysia, etc..... That's what my husband said after he watched ABC World News Tonight.
How scary for him. I get so nervous on the PA turnpike, sometimes I am afraid I will have a panic attack if I think about all the "cliff" areas.
One of the best things I've done in the past two years is move my mom from Pittsburgh to assisted living near me here in Virginia. Obviously the main reason it's good is that she's right nearby. But the secondary reason is that I DO NOT HAVE TO DRIVE THE PA TURNPIKE!! ever again! No more fog in Somerset. No more ice in Somerset. No more sleet/rain in Somerset. No more snow in Somerset. If I ever want to drive to Pittsburgh I will at least do it IN THE SUMMER! omg

Reporting is that speed was a major factor in the crash. It doesn't look like he braked before going off the road.
I hope he has been able to talk to his kids before they heard about it through the media.

What is his history with bad driving? I don’t know if he’s driven impaired before, or done anything to suggest that he has issues with his pain medication, but I did want to note that I do not have those kind of issues with pain medication at all. Never have. So I wouldn’t assume that he is impaired just because he might be taking pain medication unless there have been previous indications.

He was found asleep in his car by Florida police a few years ago. I'm pretty sure he blamed it on medications

it's been more than an hour! it's been going on 2 1/2 hours straight. how much more can you speculate and extrapolate from a story? i swear, they are talking like he is dead already. they are going over his gold history and basically eulogizing the man. geeez, he's probably still on the operating table. it must really be a slow news day. I was making dinner, so didn't hear all the details. But when my husband said it was such a big story I thought he had life threatening injuries. But my husband said no, his life wasn't in danger. Just saw him golfing with his son on the news last month, looked like he was doing well. His kids must be so worried! Not life threatening but with compound fractures in both legs, it's certainly career threatening. Yeah, I feel bad for his kids. They must be frightened.

my husband had a compound, shattered lower leg injury.. at first put together with rods and pins 35 yrs ago. medicine has come a long way. he had transplanted muscles and a new artery.. and though over the years they tried everything, this last go around 5 yrs with his second muscle transplant "solved" his issues. he has drop foot, so has to use a cane or walking poles. he is not allowed to ski. but his surgeon basically said he can do what he wants and he often goes on 3-5 mile hikes all over.
so tiger should be able to recover and may very possibly be able to golf again since golfing requires standing.. and can take a cart around a course.

Professional golfers don’t use golf carts - it’s not allowed as far as I know. He may be able to play socially, but playing as a pro is another thing altogether.

This guy needs to hire a driver before he kills someone else. Yikes! What is his history with bad driving? He wrecked his vehicle by jumping a curb and hitting a fire hydrant back when his wife discovered his mistress. It is speculated that she was coming after him with a golf club and shattered the window of his car ... which might contribute to him hitting the gas to get the hell out of Dodge. Florida police said no suspicion of alcohol. They found him asleep in his car a few years later. Breathalyzed him and pee test - negative for alcohol, but they suspect it was a medication reaction. I am 100% sure Tiger Woods get more of a pass on these incidents that you or I would, but I don't think he rates as a menace to society on the road. I know people that have 3 or more DUI's and are still on the road and still drinking.

A golf drive involves a huge amount of torsion on the lower legs. It isn't standing at all. And as a later poster mentioned, professionals are not allowed to use carts - although ironically Tiger Wood's old Stanford roommate did take a case all the way to the Supreme Court to allow a cart for his disability so I imagine it's a possibility, but really it will be way more about the impact on his swing than walking the course.

I doubt that with these injuries at this age that he will ever seriously compete on the Pro circuit again. I know that people are frustrated with the amount of coverage, but Tiger is to the sport of golf what Kobe was to the NBA or Serena is to tennis. He was truly the best of the best for a number of years, and when Tiger was playing, golf enjoyed a popularity they had lost. People tuned in to watch golf if he played. If golf is “your sport,” the coverage is more understandable. If you don’t follow/like golf, it may seem excessive.

It sounds like it was a good thing that he was wearing his seatbelt, it could well have been fatal if he wasn't.
The reports I heard (if true) said he had fractured his right leg below the knee tib & fib and had a rod inserted. That type of injury is normally something a person would recover from quite well and it would be reasonable to expect he would be able to return to golf providing there are no other complications. Healing of straight bones if it isn't too close to a joint shouldn't cause too many issues.
They also said his ankle was broken and required plate & screws - that part of the injury is the bit that is likely to cause him ongoing issues as there's several bones that all meet to form the ankle and if the fractures extend into joint then it's harder to stabilize. Fractures that involve joints have more chance of having problems with healing and will almost certainly develop arthritis in that joint down the track. It's likely to be the ankle injury that will decide if he is able to return to golf or not.
Even though it sounds like broken bones aren't life threatening, they can be, multiple fractures in one leg puts him at risk of fat embolism (mostly fatal) and deep vein thrombosis. There's also complications like compartment syndrome which if not identified & treated quickly could be serious enough for him to lose his leg.

When my oldest was at Univ. of Maryland (my alma mater), I ran into fog all the time in the Bedford, Somerset area. Or snow! My friend would tease me that every time I went I ran into bad weather. And all the tractor trailers. I am a nervous wreck on the turnpike! I don't know what's worse, the crazy beltway drivers in DC area or the weather and geography in southwestern PA.

Yep and I'm loving how everyone is an expert on his injury and potential recovery process. It's called a discussion - something happens to someone and we talk about it, give our thoughts & opinions & experiences and even speculate a little. It's how people interact. You might want to try it some time, instead of being a pissy little bitch about it. While "expert" wouldn't be the word I'd use, I have had a long career in orthpaedic nursing and used to run a fracture clinic, so it is an area I have quite a bit of experience and knowledge in. Other people have had other types of experiences, or had fractures themselves, it all contributes to the conversion.

I wish him a full recovery. Even more horrific is the injury to Ashley Judd’s leg. Yes, it was her own “fault” but the injuries sound horrific plus she was in such a remote location. Sounds like it was quite an ordeal and I do wish her well too.

I'm the one who complained first, I think, about the news coverage. But the thing is...I'd rather read about it here, or not if I choose not to open the thread, than have it repeated ad nauseam on the news when there are SO MANY other things going on in the world right now.

And then I made the comment that you seem to be taking great umbrage to which was also an overture to discussion. And I find myself almost invigorated by your name calling. No one in my everyday world calls me anything remotely like that. I don't know whether to take offense or bust out laughing.

Sorry to dissapoint you but my comment wasn't directed to you at all, just for the person after you ..it was just easy to hit the quote button. I get so tired of the people who who seem to think it's their job to shut down perfectly reasonable conversations or to try to direct how something should be discussed. However you should also be able to see that complaining about excessive coverage on TV news is part of the conversation & complaining about that aspect doesn't mean those people still don't want to talk about the topic further. This place is becoming the old granny board.
