From 2/25/2020
And since then over 500,000 Americans have died from virus trump claimed was under control. At the same time claiming the stock market was looking good.
24M+ Americans have gotten the virus and a year later we are still finding out about the nasty side effects the virus is causing to some of those who had the virus and survived.

I am the furthest thing from a Trump apologist and believe he horribly botched our national response to covid and thousands and thousands of people died as a result.
That said, given what we knew one year ago, I’m not sure that a better president would have messaged too much differently at that particular point in time. A different tone, sure, but I bet not much more than mild caution at the most to the public. Behind the scenes would have been very different, I imagine, but publicly - I don’t think so, quite yet.
ETA: I did not explain myself well, and maybe my lack-of-sleep-addled brain is thinking something I wouldn't if I were well-rested lol. Trump botched this from the beginning and he flat-out lied A LOT. None of this is what I'm referring to as what others would have done. His constant minimizing of it and never taking it seriously - also not what I'm thinking of.
I'm just thinking, broadly, that most US presidents, in late February 2020, would have - publicly, at least - been mostly "don't worry a lot about this, we are doing the right things, etc." But even as I'm saying that, it's feeling more different from Trump, who was more "don't worry, just ignore it." idk. It made sense to me when I first wrote it lololol

A better president wouldn’t have compared it to the flu. A better president would have said that we need to remain vigilant and listen to scientists, but that at this point things were under control, for (truthful listed reasons). It’s one thing to try not to alarm the masses, it’s another thing entirely to lie. Add to that his concern over how it made him look over the lives of citizens of his country? Nah, his early response wasn’t appropriate either.

A lot of leaders of other countries were taking this a lot more seriously than trump this time last year, and were speaking to their citizens with far more concern, and not brushing it all aside and pretending it would all go away in a couple of weeks.

And this was Fauci one year ago telling us not to be overly concerned. Nice cherry picking. Let’s just ignore everything else he said, like that things could change within the first 15 seconds he was speaking. What a joke of an argument lindas, even for you. THIS is an example of giving information without trying to worry the masses.

And this was Fauci one year ago telling us not to be overly concerned. The question you need to ask yourself is did Fauci have the same information that trump did at that time? According to Acosta trump received this information from the National Security Advisor. Once trump received this information did he share it with Fauci and was Bix her name? We know trump had heard from his National Security Advisor on January 28 that this virus was deadly and easily spread but we don’t know what Fauci knew when he made his comments.

And this was Fauci one year ago telling us not to be overly concerned. Fauci: "The risk today is relatively low for the American Public. But THAT COULD CHANGE." "This COULD EVOLVE into a global pandemic" "We don't want people worried but we want people to realized that THIS COULD CHANGE." "Keep in mind that the Coronavirus situation could change...could be A SUBSTANTIAL THREAT." "You don't need to be walking around with a mask RIGHT NOW..... We have 15 cases in the US right now...." - sounds like a scientist, not an idiot demagogue. Nice try though....

I don’t know, all the signs were there that this could blow up to be a huge problem and those signs were totally ignored. I think any other president who bothered to pay any attention to the daily briefs and who actually relied on science would have been much more cautious with their messaging. Don’t forget that Trump’s administration gutted the pandemic preparedness system two years prior, and those experts basically believed it wasn’t a matter of if a pandemic would be a problem but when.

Fauci assumed US leaders would follow science, and would allow US science to science. He assumed the vast majority of American citizens would follow science and behave accordingly, and have good examples of leadership behavior to follow, as well.
So, yes, he assumed the US would weather the pandemic better.
(And before anyone trots out the old mask comment, he wanted hospital-grade masks, which were in short supply, to go the healthcare workers, so he did say laypeople should not wear masks at first. He later clarified that they should wear "face coverings," leaving the masks for healthcare workers.)

The video of Dr. Fauci is from Feb. 17th, 8 days before Trump's tweet.
He was already warning people it could become a global pandemic. He talked about what was already happening in China and other countries.
And no mention of the stock market.

Lindas maybe stick to the scrapbooking side. Your cherry picking and very flawed whataboutisms are not appreciated. If you have something meaningful to post, then we are open to discussion. But posting and running away is childish at best.

I was on a business trip in SC around that time and many people who were with me in those days got a horrendous flu as soon as they returned home. The strangest was how many people were already wearing masks in the airports and on the planes. Heck, I was wiping down every surface I came into contact with. No one could get tested for covid at the time, but I'm sure that may have been the case with some of my coworkers who were traveling back to scattered parts of the country.
In any case, I hate how immediately the Trump administration politicized common sense measures to help keep us healthy. How they and his GOP sycophants exhorted Granny to throw herself on the sword for the sake of the economy.
It did not have to be this way.

And this was Fauci one year ago telling us not to be overly concerned. I’m curious. Did you watch the entire 6 minutes lindas? This is exactly where we were with what we knew at the particular point in time. So I don’t understand what you’re trying to point out. As an aside, as a Seattlite, I believe we are within days of the one year anniversary of the outbreak at Lifecare becoming public. I know next Tuesday marks a year since the last time I ate in a restaurant.

Thing is that dt knew and he had already told Bob Woodword that it was going to be very bad before this time frame last year. dt is the one who withheld the information.

I remember emailing with an acquaintance whose father is the CEO of a major global business who at the literal same time was telling me that global businesses were planning for at least months-long closures in the U.S. And I remember my brain refusing to take that seriously.
I really wish that the president had been straight from the beginning because the denial became a loyalty test. I think he could have done so without creating a panic, I do wonder if it literally was all because he didn’t want to spook the stock market.

But posting and running away is childish at best. Lindas looks into something just long enough to find a quote or thought that goes along with her agenda--which is to justify her vote and support for Trump. I really don't think she goes deeper than that.

The post from lindas is a perfect microcosm of poor thinking vs. nuanced thinking. She likely doesn't realize it but she's telegraphing her infantile need for black and white answers in a nuanced world. OP: Trump underestimated Covid LindaS: So did Fauci, nyah, nyah. Except FAUCI used the language of SCIENCE. "This what we know RIGHT NOW. THIS COULD CHANGE...." Trump used the language of BELIEVERS. "This is under control" - Implication - it will stay that way. NO NUANCE. BELIEVERS rarely CHANGE THEIR MINDS. Their beliefs are THEIR IDENTITY. If they BELIEVE IT, IT'S TRUE - PERIOD and FOREVER.Trump, in a nutshell, is childish thinking. Fauci, in a nutshell, is scientific and grown-up thinking and communicating. My favorite reminder of this - Nye and Ham debating creationism...
