funny aside-- I'd get a kick sometimes, watching Mabel watch me as I walked from room to room. If she was ahead of me, she'd veer into the room she thought I was headed toward. Cute! and sort of interesting to wonder how she determined /guessed my destination.. Our 12 lb Maltipoo does this, too. Love the way she looks back to confirm we are following her. She doesn't usually get in the way unless more than one person is in the kitchen and she can't keep an eye on both of us as she calculates who is most likely to drop something of interest.

Never had a small dog. The Whippets, past and present are too important to have their delicate feet leave the couch or bed and touch the floor enough to get in the way, unless there is food.
Now Greyhounds, whole other story. Every Greyhound I have had walks directly in front of you then dead stops and whips its pinhead around to see if you are still there, even when you smash into them. My current Greyhound spins 360s while walking in front of you. Walk, spin, walk, spin, stop and look and resume the walk and spin. I am constantly pushing her out of the way. Greyhounds also like to plop themselves across passage, hallway and the most traveled paths in the house so you need to step over them. This gives them a great view and control as it blocks whippet passage.

I have tiny (4 pounds) chihuahuas. They love to be under foot in the kitchen, but always get out of the way. Surprisingly, they’ve only been “stepped on” a handful of times in the 6 years we’ve had them.

I have a lab and a shitzu/maltese mix. I love that the lab will just stand or lay there. I know where she is, so I don't step on her. My little dog, omg, she will watch my feet but will 100% of the time move in the direction I am stepping. So she will usually gets nudged or stepped on. Drives me crazy. I would rather she just be still and I will step over her, less injury that way.

These words are uttered to my dog at least 10 times a day: "you're going to kill one of us some day!" He is always, always underfoot. Especially when going up or down the stairs. Mine recently really did "try to kill me" or at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I didn't die, just broke clavicle, and still in PT trying to get shoulder "unfrozen" and I still love him. Because of that I like to say I obviously hot my head on the way down, too. Lol. And yep, stairs were involved. Going down off deck with no real planted foot at time so he easily relocated me (to cement below) as he turned to see 3 little dogs ( SabrinaP was it you and yours?! ) run by. And yet, they still own our hearts. Whose the "master" again?!🤣

My dog, 65 pound-ish, is much more underfoot than she was when she was younger. She has become much more clingy with age, so I try to cut her some slack, and also, she is not as nimble as she once was.

My boxer relishes her role as speedbump. And she'll bowl you over to get out the front door first if something/someone she wants is out there (ball, Grandma, car ride, etc).

I have 3 chihuahuas and they definitely move out of the way when everyone's up and moving.
Now, if they're on your lap? They're not going anywhere! 😂

(Sadly, lots of grocery store shoppers also seem not to be self-aware.) why does every thread have to off track, political or Covid related when it’s a relatively simple question?

My dogs always walked slightly off to the side trying to anticipate where I was going, usually guessing correctly. They would move if I told them to get out of the way. One passed in the last year and she was the smarter of the two, figuring out how to Tim footsteps to slip past so she could fall behind, the other, still going strong, but half blind, tends to freez. Second, sidestep and rollover out of the way-he’s really cute with his duck and cover move!

Mine know what "Move!" means, but they won't do it voluntarily. They will move only if told. HA! Add an expletive and my cat understands 😂

Our mutt is a medium dog (40 pounds) and does not get out of the way. It's one of the reasons she is now forbidden from being in the kitchen. I would turn around and she would be right behind me. I'm already unsteady on my feet, so after a couple times of almost falling, I decided to keep her out.

My chi has zero sense of self-preservation. Zero. She walks around my feet, and I've accidentally kicked her while out walking several times - I have a terror of tripping on her and landing on her, though I've never actually tripped on her. She's had her toes stepped on, too. Good thing she's cute!

I read somewhere that most dogs aren't self-aware - they don't actually comprehend that their physical body exists and that it is the thing impeding your progress. (Sadly, lots of grocery store shoppers also seem not to be self-aware.) Best post I’ve seen all day Our very large hound (!) is always in the way. Always.

My DD astutely observed that my dogs are like Timmy and Tommy when I'm in the kitchen. They follow me everywhere and I have to push them out of my way.
They're both big dogs (a lab and a Belgian Malinois) and are always underfoot. I have to force them down the stairs before me so that they don't kill me. And I've closed the recliner on one of them more than once.

What in the world does Merge’s comment have to do with politics or COVID? Are you sure you aren’t projecting your own issues onto her response, because I’m not seeing it? I’ve had issues with grocery store shoppers who lack in self-awareness for the past 40+ years - long before COVID and through multiple Republican and Democratic presidencies. I would never connect a comment about shoppers wandering around in their own worlds with anything but a simple reflection of how some shoppers wander around in their own worlds without paying the slightest attention to those around them.

What does my response have to do with Covid or politics? People have been cluelessly blocking the aisles in grocery stores everywhere since the beginning of time.

I have three dogs--two large breed, one toy breed. Only one of the large boys does not move. He even will velcro himself to you. The others move. No rhyme or reason here.

I can't even tell you the million times I've tripped over my basset hound. That boy absolutely has no idea that he's always in my way or that he's the one blocking me from getting to his treats. I have to physically move the heavy boy. He sure does love to be near his momma though and I wouldn't have it any other way.
