When I was in my 20s (pre mortgage and pre children) I used to wear suits to work every day. I had suits in every colour of the rainbow, and could go more than a month without having to wear the same suit twice. The money I used to spend on suits, OMG!! My suits were all skirt and jacket, I think I only owned one pant suit.
I can’t remember the last time I saw a woman wearing a suit, except for on TV. I have no need to ever wear one, and I certainly wouldn’t wear one to a funeral. But then I also wouldn’t wear black to a funeral, so.......

I wear jackets over dresses for work (at a funeral home of all places 😆) and I actually picked up my first from Kohls and just had it altered to fit perfectly. It may depend on where you are for funerals but I rarely see a woman in a matching suit. I'd say over half are more "church" or Sunday best.

When I need something that looks nice—like a suit, formal dress, nice business outfit, whatever—I usually start at Macy’s. I would also check out Nordstrom’s too, although that’s a new store for me. Plus I do their Trunk Club and can get stuff delivered to my house to try on. if you have a Nordstrom's near you, they have personal shoppers who can help you out. (I'm sure other large department stores do this, too) You tell them the occasion / what you're looking for and what sizes you are (or approximations) and make an appointment; they send you links to things they think might work, you say yes or no... When you go to the appointment, they have it all ready for you in the dressing room. They can help with accessories, shoes, jewelry, undergarments, all of it. That's what I did for my 'wedding' dress- I wanted something different- a nice dress, but not a 'wedding gown' and the personal shopper had 4-5 options already in the dressing room. When something was the wrong size, SHE'S the one who schlepped it back and forth to find another one. And the service was free. (although I'm sure she got some sort of commission for what she sold me, I didn't buy items just because she picked them. I used her again last winter to find something for a funeral / nice work clothes (Arizona weather), and she helped me pick pieces to make a few nice mix/match outfits. She picked some items I absolutely would NOT pick looking at the rack that would look good on me, and they DID. eta: currently I'm plus-sized, and they DID actually have nice things in the plus-size department that didn't look like a sofa slipcover, lol. The pants I got were Eileen Fisher; the other things were random brands I'd never heard of.

The last suit I bought was ten years ago and is very versatile. It’s black, three pieces, jacket that has a belly thing in the back princess cut that can be pulled a little tighter for skinnier times or let lose for heavier time. The pants have the same option for adjustment on rhe side with a back zipper and two inseam pockets. The dress is princess cut like the jacket, with two inseam pocket and a slide on the belt that starts at each side that give me a fitted look but can adjust as much as 3-4 inches if I need it.. I can mix up the colors of the shirt and it’s style or just wear a white shirt which is cheap enough to get depend on where the chubbiness is. The dress has a tiny cap sleeve.
I have worn this suit at least twenty times over the last year, dressing it up with statement piece jewelry, sequin shell shirt, etc. I expect I will get plenty more use out of it. The next suit I buy will be an Armani colored navy blue suit. I can’t afford the real thing but I will try to find as close a color and fabric. I will also go for classic adjustable fit so it can be worn many years. I paid about $ 100 for the black suit on clearance and hope to pay about the same on my next.
