In a series of tweets, the FDA said it and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were reviewing "six reported US cases of a rare & severe type of blood clot in individuals after receiving the vaccine. Right now, these adverse events appear to be extremely rare".BBC link
NYT linkSeems it has the same problems as the AZ vaccine

Yes. That's the one I got and now I'm paranoid that my headaches (probably oak pollen related) are a symptom of a problem. It will be 2 weeks tomorrow so almost out of the precautionary period. I haven't felt 100% since the vaccine but it could be allergies...I just don't know. If we all end up having to get a Covid vaccination yearly, I've already decided I'm not doing it. I will just take the risk. To be fair I think one would know that something was seriously wrong and was not " normal" if one is affected and to seek medical help immediately. Key symptoms of concern include severe headaches or severe abdominal pains that don’t settle with painkillers. In some cases, there may also be vomiting, confusion, neurological deficits or seizures. These are not symptoms that anyone should ignore at any time and they are far more severe than what we have been told to expect.

Hopefully they will identify any links between those who had the blood clotting problem and figure out who is high risk or what other connections there may be.

You would know the difference between an allergy headache and a brain clot headache.

I am bummed - my county had scheduled a huge community initiative for Saturday and I had signed up my daughter for the J&J shot. Now, we are going to go through her school's clinic, which is pfizer and first shot i think is next wednesday (april 21) and then the 2nd shot is right in the middle of AP exams - 2 days before final exam. The clinics haven't been cancelled yet, so I am going to wait and see what comes out. but my husband thinks we should ditch J&J and just go with pfizer...

J&J was not my choice for a vaccine but this needs to be widely reported.

This was the vaccine I received, so I admit I had a moment of panic when I read the headline. But, it’s been three weeks since I got my vaccine, and I did not have any symptoms.
It is scary, and it is discouraging, because I feel like a lot of people who are on the fence about getting the vaccine, will now say NO WAY.

The long term ramifications of getting Covid are much more likely

I just got into an argument... um, I mean "discussion" ... with someone on Facebook who said that "one is enough for me to avoid them all" (meaning one bad reaction, which she said after someone pointed out the small number of people who have had this J&J reaction)... I asked her if she had never had ANY other vaccine? and she never took ANY over the counter or prescription medications? Because the reason they all come with warnings is that somewhere at some time in the past there has been at least one person who had a bad reaction. She hasn't replied yet.

I was able to help my dd and her boyfriend get J&J this coming weekend and now they're paused. I was cursing that I woke up at 5 am and couldn't get back to sleep, but it was a blessing: I got them Pfizers, same date, same time just a little more of a drive away.
I firmly believe that they'll find this was linked to something pre-existing. But it's also ammo for the anti-vaxxers and that makes me sad.

I'm guessing these type of people would also be wide awake when having surgery too. The risk to anyone having anaesthetic for the first time is far higher. I know personally, two people that have died because of the reaction to the anaesthetic for relatively minor surgery, one a 13 year old girl who was in my class at school. It was heart breaking but one of those rare occurrences that so many things in life carry a risk attached to them.

There is a JJ clinic doing vaccines later this week and I wanted to sign up daughter because of the one dose. I have the same issues with second dose being the day before prom and possibly the day of her AP exam (she has 3). I am hoping the JJ clinic is still going on because I keep hearing they don't like to waste doses. And it's a big clinic and that would be hard to reschedule so many people.
But my backup is Pfizer with Rite Aid. And to hope for the best that she has no side effects. I hope we can get her 2nd vaccine in June if they will let us pick the date to reschedule.

My local news often has local doctors answering vaccine questions. Some are about AZ vaccine pauses in Europe. The doctors seemed to think the blood clots were not related and the vaccines were safe. But then they have an issue here with JJ and now it's paused. I too think that when they do things like this, it makes more people nervous. My husband said perhaps those people had covid and that's what caused their blood clots. Or maybe like you said, they had a pre-existing condition?

Oh, yeah; they’ll have a field day with this, even though the risk is minuscule. In case everyone hasn’t seen this. “ The type of clot, called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, was seen in combination with low levels of blood platelets, the agencies said. Treatment is different from what might typically be administered; while usually an anticoagulant called heparin is used to treat blood clots, it is dangerous to give heparin in this situation. Alternative treatments need to be given, they said.”
“The rare blood clots, paired with low levels of platelets, were first detected in people in Europe who had received the vaccine developed by AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford. European regulators said it was “plausible” that the clots were linked to that vaccination and have been reviewing four similar clotting cases after vaccination with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, which uses a similar technology.”

I was able to get my ds an appt today at a mass vaccination site and had the choice between pfeizer and J&J and luckily chose pfeizer. I have Factor V Leiden (1 gene) which slightly increases my chances for a blood clot, but he’s never been tested. Even if this vaccine was available, I’m thinking that i would not choose it for that reason.

I will just take the risk. As you will see the other posts above my as to why this is not a good idea.. here is another. If you don't get the vaccine and take your chances, you allow variants to take hold and then we will all be back in this same scenario in another couple of years. To decide not to take the shot because of an extremely small risk of a side effect is not sound. If you know that you have a clotting disorder (which I would be surprised if those people don't have the Factor V Leiden risk) then you have to discuss these findings with your doctor. I didn't know that I have Factor V Leiden until I had genetic testing for multiple miscarriages. Even with knowing this AND the fact that I have developed DVT after one of my knee surgeries, I still took the shot. I know that if I have to take something like the vaccine or have surgery, I have to take blood thinners. I got one shot (Moderna) and did not take blood thinners and I am not concerned.

I have Factor V Leiden and had the J&J shot (it will be 2 weeks on Thursday). I also was not comfortable getting the vaccine but not because of my FVL. I have been told that if I get COVID there is a greater risk of developing a clot. Statistically it is more likely that I would get a clot from COVID over a clot from the vaccine. Like I said I have concerns about the long term effects from any of these vaccines but ended up getting one based off of the odds. I also chose the J&J based on my own personal research and which one I felt would put my mind more at ease.
FWIW a coworker had the Pfeizer shot and he had a headache from it for about 2-2.5 weeks after the first dose. Two days before his second dose is when the headaches stopped.

It’s not a platelet disorder per se but an enzyme that malfunctions leading to more fibrin adhering to platelets thus leading to a clot. My kids’ dr said they were more at risk getting Covid and to get a shot. They both got Pfizer. They both also had Covid. 1 of them got it twice. Neither got clots even though my youngest has had 3. My dh sees a different hematologist and he is the most unconcerned dr ever. One of my friend’s has a low platelet disorder. Her dr has said from the beginning. No vaccines for her. Someone mentioned they will probably find a rare risk factor that is linked. I’m off today. I can’t wait to hear the anti-vaxers tomorrow.

I have a genetic clotting disorder and, frankly, after a year of not visiting family and masking and social distancing and worrying about actually getting Covid (which is especially high risk for clotters), I'd still sign up for the J&J vaccine if that was the one being offered in my area. (It wasn't at the time, though I wished it was available so I could have been one and done.)
Six women out of several million doses given. Those are odds I can deal with, though I'm glad TPTB are pausing its use to take an in-depth look at all the details/information. I fervently hope the study is completed quickly and the results indicate the clotting was unrelated and/or within statistical norms. We need this vaccine, and more like it, because it's so much easier to use in many areas due to its single dose and ease of storage.
The fact that the CDC and other leading organizations have paused the use of the J&J vaccine to study the data blip should actually bolster confidence in the vaccine program. It shows that "They" aren't trying to hide anything.

thanks to those who posted info with sources, greatly appreciated! someone who knew i had the J&J vaccine was trying to tell me how dangerous it is now. umm, a .0004% risk of clot with the stroke is still way less than the 16% risk of clots with covid. i had covid, still got the shot.

Thank you dewryce! I am just floored that the J&J vaccine is being stopped for this. I was able to help my dd and her boyfriend get J&J this coming weekend and now they're paused. I firmly believe that they'll find this was linked to something pre-existing. But it's also ammo for the anti-vaxxers and that makes me sad. Even if you are not correct, and there is no link, it is SIX cases. No one should have side effects that are serious or should die for a vaccine, and I certainly don't want to be one of the six cases, but it is SO SO minimal. I also believe that it is likely that there is some unknown pre-existing condition. But I also believe that for birth control pills, it is similar. Not necessarily a BAD pre-existing condition, but one that makes it more like to have a blood clot. Tell me one drug - ANY drug - that has had zero fatal side effects. I do not believe one exists.

I think all things considered you should avoid the risk of getting covid as much as possible. Possibly the effects of it has been out of site, out of mind as we all start to focus on the vaccines now, but it is a devastating disease. But please, please, please, you do not want to get covid. Reduce the risk of getting it as much as you can, even if it means taking a less riskier vaccine to do so. Again, I acknowledge it's a shit choice. But it's the one we have to make.

I think it’s so sad when reporting causes this type of reaction. The risk is so low. I have more risk of blood clots with my hormone meds but when I weigh other risks against the low occurrence of blood clots it’s better to take the meds. I know someone struggling with long term consequences from a mild case of Covid and I don’t know why anyone would risk Covid over 1/7 million blood clot.
