I just figure the dr is actually spending time with the patients and throughly doing their job. Not everyone can be a quick in and out. I would want the dr to spend more time than normal with me if I needed it and not try to hurry me along so they could get caught up. I very rarely get mad at waiting.

If an emergency crops up, I get it and I'm naturally understanding. I used to have this Dr who would really overbook. I got tired of having to wait an hour at each appt and quickly found a different provider. I wanted to bill him for my time.

I. Hate. That!
I appreciate doctors who are willing to spend time with their patients as opposed to “wham bam, thank you ma’am” medicine but having to wait more than half an hour is totally rude. Call and ask someone if they can reschedule if you are that freaking far behind.
For this reason I absolutely adore my rheumatologist. If a patient is more than 5 minutes late they have to reschedule because he is so concerned about appointments being on time. I have NEVER read a full article in his waiting area before being called back and only one time in the years I have seen him have I been able to complete my pain questionnaire before he came in. I have had med check-ins or other follow up appointments (ie short but not rushed appointments) that we completed practically by the time my appointment was to start because I got there early.

That seems like a long time to wait, especially during a pandemic (it's still around!). No thanks. If it's more than 15 minutes, or if the waiting room is packed, we wait outside or in our car and tell them to call us when they're ready.
I see specialists at USF Ocular Dept, and I never wait more than 10 minutes. Once I'm in the room, I'm seen immediately.
On the other hand, I went with DD33 (drove her) to her Behavioral Health appt yesterday. Took an hour to get there, and we waited for over 2 hours in the waiting room!!!!!! I kept checking with the front desk, but they said that there were a few "emergencies". Ooy. I could write a book about the things I heard during those 2 hours. It was pretty scary.
Sorry you had to wait so long. I'd ask if this type of wait is normal and maybe find another opthalmologist. Again, mine is an Oculoplastic Surgeon and no one waits there for more than 15 minutes, ever. I have waited in regular opthalmologist's offices though.

When I was going through cancer treatment I had endless appointments and endless waits. It's not pleasant, but I turned to using the time to do some reading, some meditation (with headphones, it's easier to tune out), or just play mindless games on my phone. Yes my time is also valuable but emergencies and complex consultations take extra time and I'd want someone to spend the extra time with me if needed. I have to see my PCP every three months to get my Ambien RX and the wait is super annoying considering I don't need anything but a script (but, rules are rules). I study my Spanish on Duolingo or browse dollhouse/miniatures listings on eBay and FB marketplace to pass the time. Or read here

I work in radiology and often times we run late. We are just as stressed about it, if not more than you. Part of the problem is the world of Yelp and social media we now live in. Used to be if someone showed up late, you’d just say “sorry, I’m booked, you’ll need to reschedule”. But now we pretty much have to accommodate them, lest they put us on blast and give us a bad review online. Doesn’t matter that it’s the their own fault.
Personally, I don’t agree with it. I’d rather have one late person pissed due to their own fault, then the next ten pissed because we’re taking them late, but here we are.

I have changed doctors more than once over wait times. I had a gyro once that typically ran 75-85 minutes behind. I only saw her a couple of times and switched doctors. My last visit with her she was running almost 3 hours behind. I checked in and went shopping. Came back 2 1/2 hours later and still had to wait. That was the final straw. My time is just as valuable as theirs. My newest pet peeve are the ones who want you to come 15 minutes early. WTH? Why would I do that? I’ll show up about 5 minutes early tops. I can’t remember ever having an appointment and being seen early.

I always take a book to read when I know I will be waiting. My dermatologist--I am always called back before I can get into my book. A couple of years ago I arrived, my usual 5-10 minutes early. I was called back immediately, had that spot burned off and back at my car just as it was my appointment time.
GYN--usually a 20 minute or so wait. I do understand "patient went into labor" and doctor is late.
My internist and digestive doctors are relatively new to me and the wait has been about 15 minutes in each place.
Dentist --wait about 10 minutes. I'll give the ophthalmologist another time, but I will ask for the first appointment of the day.
