Here's my situation. My kids are getting older and don't want near as many pictures taken. Jeremys kids are getting older and combined with covid aren't coming to stay as often anymore. My craft room has been turned into an office so I can work from home and I don't see that changing any time soon so making a mess is hard to do. I'm finding I'm taking pictures but I'm taking less pictures of events because I'm busy enjoying them and more pictures of mundane every day things.
I'm at a crossroads really. I'm confused. I feel like traditional paper scrapbooking isn't working for me anymore. I could go back to digital but I'm intrigued by the idea of being able to just pull out a few papery things without having to have *all* the things. If that makes sense.
I finally figured out what project life actually is this afternoon and I keep thinking maybe that's for me now. A way to document everyday things. Only having to take one picture. Maybe scrapping for an entire week in one page protector. And making it more about me and my life. Sprinkling in the kids.
So give it to me. Pros and cons. Can you see something I'm missing? Those who do project life already why do you do it that way?
Update: I received my new scrapbook this morning with my project life page protectors too. Yesterday I received my new Canon Selphy portable printer. I'm giving this a shot this weekend. Hopefully I can pull out supplies tonight and have some fun.

You are describing how a lot of my life is like right now. Two adult children, one special needs child not involved in the usual things of a twelve year old. I'm also a slow scrapper. I scrapped 8.5x11 exclusively from 1995- about 2012? I'm not sure! Anyway, I switched family albums to 12x12 with page protectors. My life is very random. I've scrapped 2012-2021 this way. I'm not fully caught up, but don't really care. It's more monthly than weekly. I honestly don't know if I would have kept doing family albums anymore doing full page designs.
I like 6, 4x6 sheet protectors, and 12, 3x4 page protectors. I use the PhotoSheet program for putting two photos into one 4x6 size. I also have quite a few other sheet protector configurations. I find that I take a lot of vertical photos, so I try to get sheet protectors that have that orientation more.
My albums can have two years, one year, a year and a half. It just depends. I put the beginning month and year and the ending month and year on the spine. It is definitely less overwhelming because the number one thing I struggle with is page design. I also love embellishing a little bit here and there and have fun with my tiny stamps and metal dies.
I do like to do fun pages, so I have additional 8.5x11 albums for birthdays and holidays. Again, not caught up and that is okay. I like to put them out with decorations or my children's birthday month.
ETA: I guess I don't see any cons and I tend to be a pessimistic person! I guess the bigger size does feel a bit awkward, when flipping through an album after doing 8.5x11 for so long. I did forget to add there's always the 6x8 size. That wasn't really a size with many options when I switched. I already have LOTS of 12x12 sheet protectors, I won't be switching over for a long time.
Another pro, I tend to put in smaller things I wouldn't want to have scrapped an entire page about. A photo of something we eat for dinner frequently, a screenshot of my weather app forecast, some political memes thrown in there....

refugeepea you cracked me up with your pessimistic comment. But seriously thank you for responding. I share your sentiment that I'm not sure I have the endurance to keep scrapping the way that I am now. Yet I don't want to quit because the past 21 years of albums mean the world to me. I am forever grateful I did them. And I know I will regret it if I quit. All your reasons for doing project life sound like my reasons too. I'm just trying to figure out the best way forward. Thank you so much for taking the time to write all that out. I so appreciate your perspective.

I can’t think of any cons. There are lots of different sizes now so you could start small if you wanted to give it a whirl. And if you decide you want to go back to digital you can use the PL app and print pages to go in the same album. You can also add in a traditional page if the mood strikes you. Once I discovered pocket pages I never really went back. To me it was easier and simpler than trying to design a traditional 12x12 page. Plus you can still do all the fun stuff if you want. I still use stamps and paint, and embellishments, etc in some of the pockets. I also feel like I get way more stories and details in these pages than I did before. It just works better for me. I’ve been thinking about switching to monthly just to free myself up a bit.
Good luck if you try it and have fun. There are no rules, make it your own.

I also think that I will do a better job of just documenting life. I also like that you are still playing a bit a with it. I think that's what drew me back to paper from digital. I missed the paper aspect. But it's overwhelming in its current form. Thank you for your input.

I started doing weekly PL spreads this year and have been loving it. I do 9X12, so the albums while smaller, look exactly like my traditional 12X12 on my bookshelf. Scrapping the little bits of everyday life has been a good fit for me this year. With Covid, we have less events or big moments to scrapbook. It's also just a nice change of pace.
I still have plenty of prior year pictures to scrap, so if I want to do a more traditional layout, I pull out photos from a prior year.

Thank you for starting this thread. I'm in the same boat as mom of adult children, and I'll be reading every post.
I like the idea of using a combination of pocket pages and full pages so I can continue to give bigger occasions a little more space.
Also, I might even organize it seasonally rather than monthly. There's no way weekly is going to happen!

My kids are 20 and 22. I do pocket style scrapping with some full page layouts thrown in here and there. It works great for me. I started with this type of scrapping when my kids were in their late teens. I love it.
Last year I tried out 6x8 (from 9x12) and it was an adjustment, but it’s growing on me. Every now and then I want to do a larger layout, I just put it in a separate book I keep for that purpose.
ETA I scrap by the month, not weekly.

I'm single, no kids, and I made the move from 12x12 layouts to PL in 2016. I still make 12x12s from time to time but honestly, PL is great. The design aspect is so much simpler for me and I can still be artsy on the 3x4 or 4x6 cards, and I have found a style that works for me. I love it! My photos are my life and travels (well, when we could) so this just fits.
I have never done a weekly, i just go with the flow and some pages are like a birthday celebration and others are like a whole week depending on what's happening. I don't stress about it.
My best friend stopped scrapping about 5 years ago and now has a busy 3 year old but she has been recently thinking about starting a monthly PL because she misses being creative and she likes the fact that it can be as easy or as complicated as you make it.
I hope you join in, I have really enjoyed it. 😀

Jessica said: it can be as easy or as complicated as you make it. This is what appeals to me. I am a simple scrapper to begin with and I want to simplify even more. Yet I've noticed lately that I'm just scrapping pretty photos and the journaling is lacking. I want to simplify the pretty and journal more.

I took a long hiatus from scrapbooking but went back during Covid. 12x12 has always been a bit large for me, I have a few albums of big trips that are 12x12, but most of my family albums were 8.5x11. I never really did Project Life (I don’t like the way the divided page protectors flop around), but I do a lot of grid-style layouts and use PL type cards. I have now moved to smaller albums (6x8 mostly, but also the Citrus Twist albums) to document travel/trips and holidays like Christmas and Halloween, and I don’t mind the divided page protectors in those sizes. I bought one of the scrapbook.com 9x12 albums to try for everyday/family photos, so will see how that goes. I hope to do one of the 9x12 albums for each year, or maybe even two years per album if I only scrap the best photos. My kids are now college age/young adult, so I have fewer photos of them to scrap, but a ton of old photos from when they were young to keep me busy. I also look forward to documenting more everyday moments, and time with my dh, now that we will be empty nesters once my dd goes to college in the Fall.

I love Project Life. I'd tried scrapping before in 12x12 on and off and never really got into. Then in 2012, I discovered PL and jumped in Jan 2013. I love that you can do it by week, by month, or over a time span, say a week in a half if you are light on pictures. It helps me remember the tiny things: a skin care product I'm loving, a favorite pair of shoes, a book I loved. I don't have a very good memory and PL has made a huge difference. I try and jot down notes every day for my journaling. I will occasionally do a full size layout. If I don't have another larger layout I feel like doing on the back side of the page protector, I simply slip in a patterned paper I love and move on. Once I realized I could do that, I got a whole lot more relaxed about the process.
I'm doing 9x12 this year. It took me while to get into it, but I'm really enjoying the size. I especially like it for a full page 9x12 layout. Scrapbook.com has some albums & page protectors on sale this weekend.
I feel you on work in your scrappy space. I'm in the same boat.I work from home 2 days and in the office 3 days now and that won't change. I'm really trying to figure out how to make it work. I need to do a purge, a re-org, and I think I'm going to have to suck it up and buy something to accommodate work paperwork and stuff. I'd much rather spend that money on puffy stickers though.
Good luck with your quest! Dearly Dee & Leilanai Scraps are my two favorite you tubers right now for PL videos. They do a mix between simple and more complex PL spreads and their videos are typically under 10 minutes.

I don't usually scrap every day stuff, mainly make travel albums and did high school albums for my two kids.
About 5 years ago, I made a pocket style album with a Simple Stories monthly themed kit. Wanted to try something new and have a place for those random pics.
I enjoy the album but the process was sort of stressful to me because I had set, matching supplies that I was trying to make stretch the whole year. Lesson learned for me - start with variety from the beginning.
The other part that stressed me was the limitations of the pockets themselves. I felt like I made decisions on which photos to include based on portrait or landscape orientation, not based on the stories I wanted to tell. Or, if I was doing a traditional page, I might have included 4 photos of the event, but the pocket choices only gave me 3 spots.
All that to say, my approach felt limiting and not creative. I'd like to try again with more flexible ideas from the start, so I would recommend that to you.

So I’m kind of the opposite of you. Mom to 5 still very active kids. But this year I switched to PL. I cold never seem to keep up with my traditional style 12x13 albums and the little everyday things were skipped. So although I love those albums I’m enjoying PL. I don’t feel the need to have so many pictures. I like documenting our everyday life. And I’ve been up to date so I can tell the stories I don’t want to forget like the cute things my toddler says. Another positive I’ve found is that I’m not cautious about using paper I have. In the past I wouldn’t want to cut something “just in case” I needed a larger piece. So I’ve been going through my stash! And don’t feel the need to buy more and more- major positive for me.

I have scrapbooked since I was pregnant with my DD so I have all those years already caught up. Scrapbooking is becoming less about the kids anymore and more about me. I am actually looking forward to it after so many years of milestones for my kids. I don't have many pictures from my own childhood. My parents hardly ever took them. So I'm kind of looking forward to documenting myself a little better.

Thank you anniebeth24 for your feedback. I do realize that going from a 12x12 open canvas into a smaller pocket page is going to be a bit more limiting. But I appreciate you giving me the feedback on how to make it more successful. I get that this may be a con for a lot of people. And I won't know until I try it really how I'll feel about it.

You guys, thank you for giving me some critical feedback on this. I've just ordered a brand new album and some pocket pages. I'm going to finish up my 2020 pictures traditionally and give 2021 a go with the pocket pages. See how I like that. If I hate it I can always go back.

I think PL is a wonderful way to go and if I could go back to when my kids were little I would definitely jump in. I think PL is a much better system for capturing life and memories than traditional scrapbooking. Currently, my hobby is feeling good from a creativity stand point, more than the memory keeping part. So I know that PL isn't for me right now. However, I strongly think you can enjoy both in whatever ratio you like! I have divided pages that I add for photo heavy seasons and events - like Christmas, camping, family get togethers. I don't share them here because I haven't figured out how to photograph them through plastic! (Honestly, since covid I've done very few divided pages...) My favourite divided protector size is the 9x12 since the 12x12s "flop around" like mentioned above. Love msliz's idea of a "seasonal" PL spread and I think I might try that. Cathy Zielske does a monthly spread (digitally) which is also appealing to me. If I tried to do weekly, I'd end up with lots of pictures of my coffee cup

My sons are 24 and 27. Last year I took more pictures than I have in years! I usually do 12 x 12's mixed in with some pocket scrapping. I know other people that do mostly pocket scrapping with regular 12 x 12's in the mix.

I think crafting, any way you prefer, is a good thing. I make monthly travelers notebooks of what we did that month. It’s extremely therapeutic. It took me awhile to find my groove but notebooks are it. I can put whatever my little heart wants in it and that’s fun. I document the mundane things and the big things. And then at the end of the day, it’s a great reminder of what I have. I shop exclusively at cocoa daisy so the monthly stuff is there, like journal cards and embellishments. So it’s like my own project life. My oldest child is gone (I’m not in her life) my middle one is at college and then my youngest has special needs and my husband and I make so many happy memories for him. I have 3 cats and a dog that I love like my children but I’m not going to let them flip through the albums. Lol. Sometimes I wonder if my kids will want these when I’m gone but whether they do or don’t, documenting provides me so much happiness in the moment so I don’t even care. It’s cheaper than therapy. Lol which I probably still need.

I’m a 12x12 scrapbooker and I loved it. I stopped scrapbooking because life got in the way. About 10 years ago, I did project life for a year to see if it would get me back into the groove. It was not for me. It felt more like journaling a week in the life instead of scrapbooking. Truth be told, I’m more of a card maker than scrapbooker now.
That said, there are way more pocket products now that 10yrs ago. I think you should try it. My honest opinion is that once you get going with it, you won’t be in the fence about. You’ll either love it or truly know it’s not for you.

I’m an empty nester who stopped scrapping regular 12x12 layouts around 2012. Then I did a December Daily in 2014 which got my mojo going and made me want to scrap again. I currently do one 12x12 pocket page album a year, started back up with that in 2016. I scrap monthly layouts - well, I divide my album into monthly sections, some months have 2 page protectors (mostly Style A), some a bunch more. I use a lot of the old school PL Core Kits, just because it is so much easier for me to have a pre-made color scheme, plus they were so cheap at TM. Print pics, (mostly 3x4), embellish a bit, journal and I’m done. I really enjoy it and find I can reasonably keep up without stressing about it.
Lots of options size-wise. I did a 9x12 one year and liked it, but the albums were scarce for a while so I am back to using my 12x12 stash. Give it a try, bet you will like it.

Remember 4x6/3x4 cards and divided page protectors are just supplies there are no rules to how you use them. Scrapbook the everyday, scrapbook the month, or just scrap a bday party and put them all next to each other. Especially if you have a 12x12 album you can easily mix full 12x12 pages with pocket pages, 9x12, 6x8 or other sized pages all in one book. Give yourself limits as you need them but feel free to break them if they no longer work for you.
I make annual albums divided by month. With in the month I have all sorts of different pages configurations and different themes for my pages. Sometimes I do a "currently" theme to summarize the month, sometimes each kid gets their own page summary, sometimes it's me and the dog that are highlighted and everything else is grouped together. I still love a traditional scrapbook page but I also want to document the smaller things so combining all the options is what works best for me.

I think there aren't any rules and you should scrap however and whatever makes you happy.
I tried pocket scrapping years ago when we were using pocketed 2-up, 2-down photo albums (dating myself here, pretty sure this was pre-PL) because the Peas were raving about it and I figured, why not? The why-not for me was - I didn't like it the constraints of making my photos work a certain direction or my embellishments fit a certain size and I felt the pockets weren't secure so I worried about elements falling out. The album I tried it with is still incomplete...one day I'll either go back and finish it or I'll pull it apart and redo in 8.5x11. I've never tried actual PL style pocket scrapping so maybe it would have worked better for me.

Once I finished my kids’ high school 12x12 albums, I decided to move on to pocket pages. My first albums were 8x8 from Tuesday Morning, and I did one per season. It was a good way to break into the new way of memory keeping.
One thing that works for me is putting pictures into the pockets as events occur, weekly, monthly or whatever, leaving empty pockets to go back and add journaling and decorative elements. It’s a different process that took some patience getting used to, but I ended up loving it.
After 8x8 albums, I changed to to 9x12, making about one a year. Sometimes there are 10 pages from a trip, sometimes 2 pages for what I did all summer.
Last year I switched it up again and made passport-size travelers notebooks, one per month, with journaling every single day, random, eventful, anything at all. What a year to start a daily journal! It is a really special thing to look back on, as my personal life also changed dramatically during the turbulent time we all went through. For the future, I am doing random standard-size travelers notebooks as the mood strikes me. I have a big birthday coming up, so I’ll start one about me, life right now.
Try different things and see what sticks. I love the way our hobby has evolved, and seeing what everyone makes it work for them. So many inspiring and encouraging Peaple on our board!

think PL is a wonderful way to go and if I could go back to when my kids were little I would definitely jump in. I think PL is a much better system for capturing life and memories than traditional scrapbooking. I so wish PL had been around when my son was born (21 years ago). I would have loved to document all the little things - like how he loved cottage cheese so much (hates is now), or how many soothers he had in his crib (a dozen at least), how he went through a phase of being awake from 1-4 am when he was 18 months old - that's just the stuff I remember, there is so much that I've forgotten. I love the details of life and the time period it was lived in, even just things like how different the baby supplies looked back then compared to now is so interesting to me. I love the idea of an album divided by month. I'm just thinking about how I could approach this, and I like the idea that all of, for instance, January's photos are together, February's are together, etc., instead of separated by weeks so sometimes it's half January and half February for one spread. It seems like a fun way to do it. Last year I switched it up again and made passport-size travelers notebooks, one per month, with journaling every single day, random, eventful, anything at all. What a year to start a daily journal! It is a really special thing to look back on, as my personal life also changed dramatically during the turbulent time we all went through. I'm so intrigued about Traveler's Notebooks and would like to try one. I love the idea of doing one per month. Lots of good ideas on this thread. I do a weekly PL but I'm always interested in new ways to approach it.

marg I don't limit myself to 1 spread. I make as many pocket or traditional spreads as needed for the photos and stories I have. The year I'm working on (2016😳) I decided to use the same pocket configuration to start each month but after that the sky's the limit. I let my photos help me decide if I should do additional pocket pages or traditional LOS and I make as many as needed to scrap the month.
