You don’t know that. Maybe they have a scholarship. Maybe a relative pays tuition. A lot of people lost jobs during the pandemic, which usually means losing health insurance, unless you can afford COBRA, which many people can’t. Thank god I’m the primary breadwinner and benefits carrier in our family, because my husband just started back to work normally this Tuesday. He was out of work since last February, due to covid. We are very lucky we were fine, but many families had similar situations and less ability to weather them. That may or may not be the case here but we don’t know. Extending grace instead of assuming the worst is rarely a bad idea. This should be repeated. Seriously. Everyday someone comes here and vents about the steaming pile of dog shit that this past year has been. For jobs. Mental health. Relationships. Complications because 'xyz' can't be looked at by a Dr because of no appointments and everyone can sympathize with them. But when someone comes and posts about not having an eye/hearing test done and its said that their kid goes to private school and the parents have a good job so they should be on top of everything. Who knows if everything else in their life isn't a shit storm? I don't think anyone here has enough info to be judging another parent. I took the OP’s “always” to mean that this is a parent issue she deals with yearly, including pre-Covid. Being busy and stressed is one thing; copping an attitude with a school worker about a required screening over which the worker has no control is something else.

Well....I can vouch that these parents have been like this well before the pandemic. She was the same way with the US immunization requirements when they first enrolled two years ago. They moved here from Europe and did not have all of the required vaccinations.

Let me just say, my kids only went to public school, and frankly, if my child can hear I do not see why I have to go to a doctor to prove it. Hearing impairments often require some kind of services to address the loss or impairment. So basically, I don't see why the school is requiring this. Seems stupid to me. I get what you're saying and don't mean to divert from the thread but I know of several instances where parents thought their child was always being ignorant or naughty...turns out they had some deafness and just couldn't hear their parents making requests of them. Tests can often identify things that parents miss. Anyway I understand your point, but just putting a general PSA out for others.

Our pediatrician is still not conducting annual check ups because of Covid, so not sure how we would be able to comply.

You'd be amazed at how many kids don't realize or don't tell parents they have hearing/vision issues and have just learned to compensate Absolutely this. Some children (and the parents) don’t even realize the impaired vision or hearing. I have a young niece who only saw in shades of black and white. She didn’t say anything because she thought that’s what everyone saw. It was discovered at her first pre-schooling vision exam.

It’s a huge practice I don’t know how they will catch up honestly. I do imagine they are seeing infants/very young kids. They are seeing sick patients in person, after Covid tests/with extensive protocols/waiting in car etc. Of course our county still has a nearly 7% positivity rate and very low vaccination. Ugh.

My brother (who wore glasses) told my parents I was having trouble reading numbers when he helped me with my first grade homework. After an optometrist visit, I was fitted with my 1960's "cat's eye" glasses, and asked my family: "Does everyone see this way?"(meaning clearly).
One child played sports so there was a mandatory annual sports physical and one was a micro-premmie who had some eye issues that resolved, so both had every screening test/eye exam/dental check-up required.

Me and all of my children had their eyes found out at school. Meaning the vision screenings got us all to an eye dr amd ws all 4 wear glasses. One child had attention issues and had a hearing screen at school amd was sent to an audiologist. Thankfully his hearing is intact but these screenings at school work. They’re mandated for a reason.

We are a small public school. Last years graduating class had 9 students. The Lions Club comes in and does our vision screening and I think they also do the hearing as well. Is there a similar organization in your area that would do it?

Our pediatrician is still not conducting annual check ups because of Covid, so not sure how we would be able to comply. That seems crazy to me. My doctor's office is doing well visits but if you have covid symptoms they do testing in the parking lot and don't let you in the building. You can come in for a sick visit if it's not the normal covid symptoms that you're sick with. We discovered that my oldest DS's vision was so bad at kindy screening that he needed to wear an eye patch for a few years. As a result, younger DS has gotten yearly eye exams since he was old enough to know his letters...even though his vision is perfect. Every year the optometrist jokes that his vision is the best he's seen in a long time, because people don't normally bring in their kids that don't complain of vision issues. I'm just afraid of missing it.
