I think I have it. For a couple of days I've had a small area on my back that is painful and itchy. Today my bra was driving me crazy. When I took it off there is a painful rash along my bra line and on my right breast. Should I go to the doctor?

I have heard that Shingles can be very painful. I have also heard that these days it can be less painful if you get treated right away. Since it is the weekend try calling your Pharmacist.

Is the rash only on one side of your body and does it seem to follow a line? I’d say go to the doctor - can be very painful.

Yes, you only have a limited time to get on the antivirals.

If you don’t get on the antivirals soon enough, you could wind up with permanent nerve pain. Hugs, and I hope you get well soon.

I had shingles nearly 20 years ago and didn't realize it for nearly a week so it was too late to get the medicine. I thought I had poison ivy. It didn't start hurting until a few days in. Shingles is typically on only one side of the body. If it gets into your eyes, it can be particularly dangerous but sounds like your rash isn't in that area. Do go to the doctor to get medicine and stay away from anyone who has not had chicken pox. You can not give someone shingles but someone who has not had chicken pox can get it from you in the early days of your shingles, if that is what you have.

If it is only on one side of your body and follows a line (nerve), then it sound like shingles. Go to urgent care tomorrow morning, if you think it is!

Yes, I had it day after Christmas a few years ago. As soon as I saw the rash, I knew what it was, since I had seen patients with it. Called my PCP but the next appointment was a few days later, so I went to the urgent care. Got seen pretty quickly and got the meds.

Yes. I developed a rash on my head. Went To the urgent care thinking I was having an allergic reaction of some kind. Thankfully the doctor knew what she was doing and recognized that I had shingles, and it was also in my eye. I had no idea! She got me on meds right away, and my symptoms were never really terrible. Although I had to go to the eye doctor every week for a couple of months… get on meds ASAP!

Unfortunately yes. I developed them on my scalp while pregnant. Cant say I’m a fan but it is manageable. I would definitely try to get on the antivirals if you can get in. When I had them I was prescribed Vicodin but when my sister had shingles, the doctor gave her a lot of grief when she asked her about pain management. She had to really put her foot down to get some relief. I hope you are feeling better soon!

Go to Urgent Care - do not wait to try and get an appointment tomorrow. It may already be too late, but it's worth the Urgent Care fee. Shingles can be very, very painful.

If there is an open Urgent care get there NOW!! The posted link says treatment within 3 days.... I thought it was less. It might not hurt to give a call to your doctor hotline or even an ER to ask about waiting until tomorrow!!
Do not handle be near your great grands if they have not had the chicken pox vaccine yet, or anyone else for that matter!!!
Oops. I only read the first line!

Thanks for the advice. Besides the ER, there are no urgent cares open. I'll go in the morning. eta: it is all on my right side pretty much in a straight line from my back to my chest.

Get to Urgent Care right away. DH had shingles 10 years ago in the nerve that goes from the tip of the nose back to the top of his skull. It took several days to get a diagnosis because it presented as a headache followed by a watery eye. He was given a shot for the pain at his first visit to Urgent care (Friday evening) and told to go to the ER if the pain came back in 4-6 hours because it could possibly be an aneurysm or something in his brain. Thankfully a scan showed nothing, but he still had the headache. The watery eye continued too and by Sunday morning he was developing a sore on his nose near where the pad of his glasses sits. The same doctor at Urgent Care walked in the door and immediately knew he had shingles because of the sore on his nose and another one that was starting to develop. He got a prescription for the antiviral pills, but I'm not sure how much they helped because it was a miserable week for him (and me). He ended up back in the ER a few days later because he was dehydrated. His face looked awful because of the sores, but they healed up just fine.
To this day he still has to see an ophthalmologist every couple of months because there's still something going on in his eye. It doesn't affect his vision (other than he can't wear contacts anymore) but he's been on special eyedrops for 10 years and every time the ophthalmologist has tried to wean him off the drops the "whatever is going on in his eye" comes back.

I had a mild case. It started with about 10 little bumps that itched like crazy. On my left side, near waist line. Showed everyone ( women friends ) at work, everyone thought they were bug bites. After 2 days of itching - they started to hurt a lot. A lot. I instantly went to Care Now and fortunately, I got the medicine in time. I have since been vaccinated with the newest shingle shots.

Did you know there is such a thing as genital shingles? It's not genital herpes, the blisters go in a straight line on only one side. I had no idea.
That's your fun healthcare fact!

I had it once when I was a teen. My shingles were raised clusters that resembled blisters and not a rash. Though, I've had those too. Go see a doctor just to be sure.

They are so fucking expensive, I usually go back and forth with myself, google, and my best friend trying to decide.

I wish there was the chicken pox vaccine as a kid. At the time it was fine and I got to stay home and watch cartoons, it was only until I was older that it can lead to shingles later.
OP, I hope you treated and feel better soon.

I have had Shingles and you definitely need to get onto seeing someone straight away. I had it on the right side of my face and initially, my doctor misdiagnosed the rash (it was Wednesday) and I was sent away. Went back again on the Friday because of the pain & was again sent away saying that it was just a rash & to rub some cream on it (which I tried but it made the pain significantly worse).
Went back to see a different doctor on the Monday in absolute agony because it had spread into my ear canal and in my mouth and they took a swab of one of the sores & sent it to a Pathology Lab to confirm it was the Chicken Pox virus (which causes Shingles when the virus reactivates). Everyone who has had Chicken Pox is at risk of developing Shingles because the virus lives in your spine & never actually goes away. Because it wasn't diagnosed quickly enough, I ended up with Post-Herpetic Neuralgia from the nerve damage because the anti-viral meds weren't administered quickly enough. I have constant pain & I get fairly regular bad flare-ups which are as painful as the original infection & and have had to live with the pain since 2007.
Hate to scare you - but I would go to Emergency! Don't delay - see someone today!

Yes, and it sounds like you might.
Visit the doctor asap. They have meds that can help.
Big (((Hugs)))
Shingles made me ache in my bones/joints, the rash was terrible, and I still have firey burning pain sometimes in the area of my shoulder blade that I had the worst of the rash.

Yes, you only have a limited time to get on the antivirals.
It is important to get the Rx ASAP!
I have had shingles 3 times. Luckily the first time, the school nurse identified it and I zipped to the doctor that day. The Rx kept it from becoming bad. It was on my face. I had outbreaks twice on my face and one time near my waistline. Each time was less than the time before.
I had one dermatologist who told me that I could not have had it twice and since I didn't come to her the 2nd time, it had to be something else. My reply: It looked the same, it acted the same and the same Rx stopped it. The 3rd time (on my waist) I thought it was poison ivy and went to physician because it would not clear up with my poison ivy ointment. She diagnosed shingles. I joked with her that I was making medical history since
dermatologist insisted it could not happen.
I hope yours clears up soon.

FWIW, I have never had chicken pox. My son did have them and I guess the virus entered my body then.
Since I have had the shingles 3 times, I don't know what the vaccine would accomplish for me. One doctor agreed when I told her my history.

I had a similar presentation with shingles. Plenty of research shows that you are less likely to experience long term post infection pain if you start taking anti-viral treatment by the 5th day. I started it on the 6th due to not being able to get seen over the weekend and was on amytriptiline for pain for 8 months.
