At this point, the college students are home and they lined up their jobs months ago. It will be slim pickings for your ds this late in the game. I don't think that necessarily true here. MN colleges are just now grad'ing. Like last wk.

My daughter started working as a cashier at Lowes at the end of March. She did some weekends where she worked both Saturday and Sunday. Others just one of the days. They hire extra people for spring and summer with many of the jobs in the garden center. It's part time and they are paying her $13.25 an hour. She'll work three eight hour shifts a week after she's done with school. As of right now she feels like she'd want to work there again after her first year of college.
If you don't have a Lowes in your area, what about a place like Home Depot or Menards? I would think they'd need extra help in the summer months.

My DD is working at a camp this summer, and they are still looking for recent high school grads. It is her first job, and she got lucky by talking to the right person at the right time.

I would tell everyone you know your son is looking for a job. I would have him do the same.
My son went to the local mall when he was in high school and applied for a summer job at every restaurant in the food court. He landed a job making pretzels. He's a lawyer now, but can still twist a perfect pretzel!

What about umpiring baseball, reffing soccer, reffing football, timekeeping hockey, grocery store carry out, construction clean up crew, bowling alley pin monkey or birthday party hostess, day camp counselor - we have a lot of sports day camps, my ds did that after grade 9 and 10. My son refs travel soccer. I cannot believe his hourly wage. I think it's something like $40? it might be more.

My ds makes good money umpiring baseball but he has been doing it since he was 14 (now 18) and only does the high level older boys now. Hockey timekeeping though he makes a fortune. he has been doing that since he was 12 and now only does the Provincial Women's League and makes $80.00 per game which takes about an hour and half to play. So pretty easy money too.

I read something about how Chipotle is offering higher wages and a $750 referral bonus to hire 20,000 new employees. Since there is one close to his campus, that could work out well. I also think that he could get a job just about anywhere with fast food. Sports camps or refereeing would be right up his alley. Yes, they probably have hired, but I hear there are labor shortages everywhere.
When we sent our kids off to college, neither had ever had a summer job before. But i told them that they were in charge of their spending money and that I wasn’t giving much in the way of that. It turns out that was a good motivator. DS found his campus job during summer orientation while standing near the kitchen talking about needing a job. He was hired then and there to work the breakfast shift at one of the campus cafés. He worked there all four years. DD procrastinated and didn’t apply for any jobs until she got to campus. She worked the cash and carry line at the dining hall for 2 days. She was scheduled to work the next 2 weekends, getting up both days by 5am. She found a job in the costume shop the next day, worked out her 2 week notice, and quit. She worked the costume shop for 3 years and did an custom class for a show last fall. She also worked at the counseling center this year
He can work it out or be broke. It’s his choice!

Another thought would be if there are any big garden centers near you? That kind of store would be hopping over the summer months.
Is he a good swimmer? Maybe he could get a job giving kids swimming lessons. The community ed swimming classes around here are almost all taught by older teens or young college kids.
Another thing he could check with is a temp agency to look specifically for something short term. My sister did that after she retired to find a part time job and the business they placed her in ended up keeping her on for 3-4 years!
