We have more than one I'm sure we could have everything in its place, but I'm not running downstairs and into my craft room if I want scissors or tape. I'm lazy and I know that about myself. So several junk drawers it is! m That’s not really the idea, though. The idea is to think about how and where you use an item and have it there so it is easy to use and easy to put away. So, yes, I have a pair of scissors in my craft room (my Tim Holtz paper scissors and my fabric scissors). But I also have kitchen scissors in the kitchen. And school scissors in the school room and so on. I never have to run around the house like a crazy person to get what I need. What I need is always right where I need it.

Yes, but the only thing I use out of it is the Chinese takeout menu Scissors are kept near the microwave and pens and pencils are in a jar ... I really should clean out that drawer

Yes I do and I think it is a cultural thing to call it a junk drawer as it very important stuff in there. I grew up in the Midwest and it was a term my mom used.

"Junk Drawer" is the drawer that holds odds & ends and an assortment of things that are not really related. It can be organized - or not. Some are taking the term 'junk drawer' too literally I think.

If it is in my house it is there for a reason and it is in its place. I also don’t understand why some people keep stuff like that in the kitchen. I have never in my life kept pens, tape, rubber bands, screwdrivers, batteries, or the other things people are mentioning in this thread in the kitchen. Literally everything in all of my kitchen drawers relates to the eating or preparation of food.

Yes, true in my case. I have scissors, tape, sharpies, rubber bands, etc, in mine. With some odds and ends like earplugs. 😁

Yes. Random stuff, tape, scissors, tape measure, squeaker from a dog toy and things like that. I do have places for for these items but it is nice to have the handy extras available without traveling to various locations throughout the house.

Right, in the junk drawer! No. In their place in the under counter knife block. We do have kitchen shears that are used to cut open food packages, snip herbs, etc. Those are then washed and put back in the knife block. But we also have other scissors that are for rougher, non-food uses that go in the drawer. Along with tape, a box cutter, paper clips, permanent marker, superglue, stuff like that. We also have a small flashlight in several rooms of the house. That flashlight also goes in the drawer.

You've never needed a pen to write down something when you are in the kitchen? You've never needed tape to shut a food box or bag? All my life, the kitchen has been the hub of the house. We gather there, even while not eating. We read the newspaper (or used to) at the kitchen table, we've sat around and done homework in the kitchen or played cards. Our kitchen has never been just for cooking and eating.

I am much more likely to use scissors, tape, pens, paper in the kitchen than most other areas of the house. We technically keep tape in an office type area, but rarely use it there so it ends up in the kitchen. Makes more sense to just have a spot for it there. Same with batteries.

Our dining room is a separate room from the kitchen.

Otherwise if "someone" (I won't mention who!) pulls it out too fast we don't end up with angel hair all over the floor.

I don't have a free for all junk drawer. That is way too much chaos and disorganization for me.
I have a tall rollabout cart that has 10 drawers that contains tools, stuff >> tape (scotch-packing-electric), tape measure, ruler, electric cord, sand paper, etc.... I have a small desk top 3 drawer caddy, that holds pens, note pads, index cards, paper clips, etc.. A kitchen drawer has tray/box thingy next to the silverware holder. It contains, toothpick box, bag clips, etc.. Lights bulbs go on a shelf in my closet.
All items have their place. I don't like messy drawers, cabinets, closets, shelves, etc...

We technically keep tape in an office type area, but rarely use it there so it ends up in the kitchen. Makes more sense to just have a spot for it there. Same with batteries. 100% this. Ours definitely is the hub of our home. I probably use more tape and Sharpies in the kitchen than anywhere else in my house. Right now DD is using it as her classroom because the table has more square footage than her desk in the office does so she can spread out a little more, plus that room has better lighting than the office does. And I also agree that if the stuff in the “junk drawer” is convenient in that drawer, then that IS that item’s home so therefore it is “put away” when it’s in there. The really funny thing about this thread is that just today I was digging around in one of the two kitchen drawers where we keep a lot of miscellaneous stuff (again, because it is *convenient* to keep it there). I must have pulled out no less than 50 lip balms of DD’s from that drawer. She used to always need some before heading out to the bus in the winter so that was a good spot for it, but school at home this year means no bus which means she didn’t need it as much. People kept giving her new flavors over the years so into that drawer they went and I just never really thought about it. I also keep a lot of her hair ties in that same drawer because I would always end up braiding her hair at the dining room table after she ate breakfast while she was talking to her dad before school. Anyway, the reason I was rooting around in there today was because I’m getting a bunch of stuff together for a garage sale and a toy I was packing up to sell was missing some specific small pieces. DD hasn’t played with the thing for probably four years, and I had a vague recollection of putting the pieces in one of those drawers to keep them off the floor so the dogs wouldn’t chew them up and wreck them. Sure enough, they were in that drawer under some note pads, LOL. The bottom line was that I knew exactly where those things were and I was able to put my hands on them within minutes of looking. So even though my “junk drawer” might seem somewhat cluttered to the untrained eye, my mind isn’t and I knew right where to look! Isn’t that the real goal, being able to put your hands on what you need when you need it? It doesn’t need to make sense to anyone else. It only needs to make sense to the people who are working within that system.

I have never in my life kept pens, tape, rubber bands, screwdrivers, batteries, or the other things people are mentioning in this thread in the kitchen. Literally everything in all of my kitchen drawers relates to the eating or preparation of food We do have tape, elastic bands, pens etc in the home office but the kitchen diner is my 'base' for quite a chunk of the day so I need some in there too. Apart from cooking there, I sit there to eat my lunch with the tv on and will jot down notes (pad and pen) of things I need to remember/do and where I have written down the week's meals and a note to call my Mother-in-Law. I write notes in recipe books (pencil), I have my hand cream and cuticle cream to hand because I'm often washing my hands during food prep, a pair of reading glasses, my stretchy exercise bands on the back of the chair so I think to do a few bicep curls while I wait for the potatoes to boil, a ruler to check the size of some baking tins that don't have it marked on, there’s the birthday card I must remember to write, my sunglasses are on the side/counter at one end because that's where I'll stand before I go out shopping, making sure I have my list etc, my tomato plants are on the windowsill so there's the indoor watering can nearby, the little bottle of plant food for the houseplant on the table, the latest Lands End catalogue that just got delivered that I will flick through while I have my lunch...and so on. For me, the kitchen definitely isn't 100% about food.

I don't really understand people that are saying no- everything has its place. All of my stuff has its place- some things place is the junk drawer. Office supplies, box cutters, batteries, tape measure, spare glasses, etc. all are in the junk drawer because that is the place for those things. And yes, I usually use that stuff in the kitchen.

I call it the junk drawer, but it is completely organized.
I have one in the kitchen, with mostly office supplies. I have another in the bar cabinets with small tools, duct tape, packaging tape, etc.

No, I got rid of it a bit ago. The miscellaneous birthday cake candles and balloons in it were put into a small plastic box in the pantry. All other stuff was tossed or put where it/they actually belong ( a hammer went in toolbox, recipes with recipes, etc).
