I was the President of our HOA board for over 15 years. NO ONE else would ever step up to the plate and do it. So I did it for many many years. It's a small HOA and not much to it most of the time and I am not the one that is Ms. Picky person.. so there was never a problem with that. As long as you mowed your lawn and didn't have trash and crap outside your yard, you were fine. Late on dues? I would usually always grant an extension without fees. For those who paid it on time, no problem. We all go through money problems. If you burned me, then no chance.
ANYWAYS, I am done. I told them since late last year I was done. They kept me on the email list. I read some, mostly ignored. The lady who took over (THANK GOD) just freaking sent me an email. So and so moved away and was wondering if you wanted to take her place. OMG NO NO NO NO...
My answer was no, but going about it the long way. I was busy, burnt out on HOA, lots of plans, blah blah...and I ALMOST wrote down, 'but if you need anything..." and I stopped in my tracks. NO I am not doing that either. So my long explanation I did get to "No" but it was the long way.. I guess that is better than saying okay, I'll do it for one more month.. yada yada yada..

We also have a small homeowner run HOA and it's a thankless job. I resisted being on the board for 13 years, but this year they got me to agree to be the secretary.

Good for you! It's a bit freeing isn't it? Sometimes I find when I say no without a long winded explanation that people can argue with they just laugh because they think I am joking. I smile and give them some type of kind best wishes comment and just love that feeling of freedom.

Can you believe we have never had a secretary? Or a Vice President? Just me. This new gal though thinks she is going to change all that. Hence, why the email to me. I tried to tell her that NO ONE gets involved. NO ONE goes to the meeting. She is blasting the management company with all kinds of crap to do. I did it for 15 years with no one. Sounds like you're learning that "No" is a full sentence. Good for you!
Long story short: I was nominated to the Board without knowing it, which meant I couldn't let the Board know I wanted to be removed from the nomination form. I won a spot. After 2 meetings, I quit. There are 7 other members: I'm not needed and it's not my scene. I've been asked about it, and I just smile and say "I'm good not being on it." They don't need to know why. I don't need the stress of being on it or explaining WHY I don't the stress lol.

After years and years on my HOA board, I became president this year. In one way, I wish I had done it sooner. In another, I am getting a lot of crap right now because it's pool season. It'll get better once that is over. The good things about being president is I control how long meetings are AND I get to say what I want. Our meetings are half the time and everyone keeps telling me that they are happy I am just being upfront.
We had 3 board members one year and it wasn't enough. This year we have 6 and it's great. Then we have committees. I can pretty much get anyone to serve on a committee. It is seriously MINIMAL work (20 mns annually), but we have to have them.
But I have made it clear this is my last year. Good for you for saying NO!

Sounds like you're learning that "No" is a full sentence. Good for you! I learnt this from the peas years ago and it’s something I consciously think about when I’ve been asked to do something I can’t or don’t want to do. It’s about learning that you don’t owe someone an explanation for your refusal, and sometimes there is no reason other than I don’t want to. It’s a great lesson. |

We have a management company that does all the 'work'. Mostly all I had to do was approve/not approve stuff, sign tax paperwork and a check once and awhile. Really it was pretty low key. No one ever went to the meetings except maybe one person. The annual 'big' meeting, maybe two people. Out of 82 homes. The new chick is all about making sure everyone knows when the meetings are, doing this and that, turning people into the attorneys for non-payment (understandably) (which I did just not this aggressive), she is mad because the mgmt company will not meet face to face for a walk through of the neighborhood. They will do a drive through alone.. but that is is. Big news lady.. NO ONE will show up for the meetings, no one cares unless they have a complaint. Oh well she can have all the fun. |

I was on our 72 unit condo HOA for awhile. But I changed to a 2nd shift job and I had to resign as I could no longer make the meetings.
It is a thankless job that does nothing but draw criticism from most of the owners who do not want to do any of the work or offer anything but that criticism. It shocks me every annual meeting that out of 72 units we are lucky to have maybe 5 owners (other than the board members) show up.

I actually plan on not attending any meetings for awhile.. cause I know she will try to suck me in. I am pretty low key, keep my yard up, pay my dues and done. So unless I have a problem or need approval on something I may attend at least the annual meeting.. or maybe not. |

Good job saying no! You have to be careful when you give reasons for saying no... such as "no I can't be on PTA right now because I still have a baby at home"... Well to some people that means "yes I'd be happy to next year when my baby starts daycare!"  When really what you meant was "it will be a cold day in hell before I go on PTA!!"  When I get asked to sub by a teacher with a horrible class I might say "I'm sorry but I'm not available that day." It's not my fault, is it, if that teacher assumes I have another sub job that day? It's on her if she assumes that and not that I have an appointment with the chair in my front yard so I can read.  We've all heard the phrase "no is a complete sentence". Yes it is, but it sounds too abrupt to me. So sometimes I just say "no thank you". Sometimes that stops them in their tracks because really what can they argue about? They could say "oh you'll be perfect for this job..." Then just repeat "no thank you" and smile. |
