I know people are so tired of talking about and even hearing the name trump.
That includes the current Administration feeling that way. I mean President Biden is busy undoing as much of the mess trump made as he can. But there is a very definite lack of enthusiasm for holding him accountable for some of his less then honest actions.
And I think that is a mistake. And I didn’t quite know how to say what I was thinking and why.
Tonight watching Rachel she talked about this very subject and shared an article from the Boston Globe.
I read it and thought “hey, I was thinking just that”. So here it is.
Except they don’t go as far to say he should be investigated and potentially indicted for obstruction of justice, quid pro quo with Ukraine, and his roll in the storming of the Capital building on January 6.
From the Boston Globe…
“FUTURE-PROOFING THE PRESIDENCY”
“Donald Trump brought our democracy to the brink and exposed its weak spots. How to thwart the next American tyrant.
Donald Trump exposed the weaknesses in our system of government that could now be exploited by a corrupt leader with control of the White House. In this series, the Globe editorial board outlines the urgent reforms needed to prevent the rise of an American tyrant — and to protect our democracy for posterity.
The 45th president was in bed financially with foreign governments, a precedent for America’s enemies to wield influence over the Oval Office. Lawmakers and voters must prevent this from becoming common practice.
Donald Trump exploited loopholes to build a White House rife with nepotism. Lawmakers must close them.
Donald Trump got away with thwarting investigations of wrongdoing by his campaign and his White House. Without reforms, future criminals could exploit the powers of the presidency to even more dangerous ends.
Donald Trump’s abuse of the pardon power to reward criminal loyalists is a precedent for a future authoritarian leader to commit crimes without consequence. Its use must be curtailed by Congress.
Saving American democracy for the long run requires a clear condemnation of the Trump presidency. That means making clear that no one is above the law.“
I understand people are tired of trump and just want to pretend he doesn’t exist.
I felt that way when Nixon resigned and Ford pardoned him. I was thrilled that I didn’t have to listen about Nixon or Watergate. But that it was a mistake that Nixon wasn’t fully held accountable and let’s face it, compared to trump, Nixon looks like a saint.
And while Nixon quietly disappeared from public life trump is doing anything but. He may be off twitter and Facebook, but he is out there selling the lie. Which is just not good for this country.
trump believed and still believes as President he had/has complete immunity for his actions while President. Until trump this idea was never fully tested.
He was impeached twice but one of the two political parties that is suppose to provide oversight checked out. So both trials were a joke.
Robert Mueller believes that trump, now that he is out of office, can be indicted for any of the potential obstruction of justice incidents listed in the Mueller Report.
Don McGhan’s testimony from Judiciary Committee is out and at first read there looks like there might be some grounds to indict trump on obstruction of justice charges. The “disinterested third party experts” will have to decide if there is enough to pursue. If there is, I think they should pursue it.
IMO there are two things we must do at this point in time. 1. trump proof the presidency so future presidents can’t follow trump’s path of destruction. 2. Decide once and for all if the President of the United States is above they law. We found out there are flaws in impeaching a president so I guess there needs to be a back up plan.
This needs to be done now and not something that can be kicked down the road for another Congress to deal with. Or if this happens again, “that guy” could make trump look like a saint.
