I think town / city is more important than house. Isn’t the saying ‘location location location’ .
For me, neighbourhood was the number 1 important factor. We compromised on the house to have certain elements to our neighbour hood - I wanted it walkable to local village, walkable to services and restaurants, walkable to gym, walkable to school, bike ability to beach, downtown, etc, close to family, close to forest, parks, beach, etc. We compromised on the size of our house and yard but our home is still beautiful. I’m so happy we don’t need the cars to do everything.

For me, location is most important. The perfect house in a declining/dying town won't be worth much in 5-15 years. Also, I can remodel to fit my desires, or build new. I can't remodel a town. advice has always been to pay more attention to location. A cheaper house in a great neighborhood will gain value. A high end house in a poor neighborhood will lose value.

Location for me. I could have a great house but if there was no robust biking community and options for road, gravel, and mountain biking - hard no; same for a town/city with a broad variety of restaurants and shopping.
For me though, if I were going to move, I already have locations in mind where I would go. There are several cities throughout the Southeast where I have friends and that offer everything I would want in a new location.

Town is pretty important to me. No surprise given that I have lived in 7 houses in the same town in the past 28 years (5 of those homes being walking distance from each other). When I was looking for houses in 2019 I could have found a much bigger house with better amenities for less money if I'd been willing to move somewhere else.

Neither as my house is going on the market today! good for you! I expect that by Wednesday, you'll be posting about which offer you've accepted, the way this market is going!! We're talking about doing this eventually too, but we want to find a new place first, which is why I'm (most likely) overthinking the whole issue of where to move to.

If I had to choose I would pick house over town.

we stretched to buy a house in our town 40 yrs ago.. and wouldn't trade the town for much. we have a small house.. and the neighborhood has become better and better. so over the years, the town qualities mean that everything is more walkable, more accessible, and we have good funding for parks, and services. the schools are ok. but the state of CA overall has poor school funding.

Definitely our house. We moved to a new town 2 summers ago and while we think the town is OK it’s our house that we love.

In general, location to me is more important to me than the house. However, it's all relative.
I wouldn't want to live in a fabulous location if it meant I was going to be house poor.
