Just realized that 2021 is my 20th anniversary of weightloss. I went from (over) a size 20 (at barely 5' tall) to a size 2 within a year with a very slow and safe weightloss + exercise. This was the first time that it really sunk in. Countless times I began a "diet" only to give it up and gain even more weight. I yo-yo'd so many times, with so many different "diets". This time it worked. I had a vivid dream of how it felt to be thin and healthy again. I woke up and began to take action.
It took a year, and then I maintained for a couple of years before I actually worked as a weightloss counselor. I loved it!! Over the 20 years I've gained some back, but NEVER got near my halfway mark. I continually strive to be healthier and to work out, but my own medical issues get in the way. I am also the caregiver to DH and it's been time-consuming and sometimes stressful, but I keep wanting to carve out time to see if my 60 year old body could get back in muscular shape.
I kept up with many things I've learned and incorporate them, still. I am NEVER without my trusty water bottle. I cut out more and more foods and drinks that I find to be unhealthy. I haven't drank alcohol in a very long time. I don't eat fast food. I'm trying to continually be healthier.
Just wanted to share. I'm happy that it's been 20 years and I finally stopped the huge weight gain and then some weightloss. I never want to be over 'double digits' in clothes. It's too much for my 5' body.

I like the way your commitment to better health has meant action when you realize that something isn’t helping you, like alcohol and fast food.
Here’s an anecdote: I went to see a migraine specialist recently, and he sent me home with a long list of foods to avoid. DS, having watched me become a gluten free vegan who recently started avoiding nightshades, said , “ if anybody’s good at eliminating things from their diet, it’s you”. He meant is lightheartedly but also in a serious way.
Like you, if doing something or avoiding something else means I’ll feel better or be able to stay active now I’m in my 60’s, I’ll do it.

Oh gosh, I deal with chronic (daily) pain with my eye socket, and I see a pain mgmt doctor. I do have that list of foods to avoid. I'm good about it all, but I sneak chocolate sometimes (a bit). When you feel better as a direct result of altering your diet, it's a quick reminder to keep doing it!! I'm also in my 60's, so maybe this is the decade to do what's best for our overall health!?
DS30 just became gluten-free out of necessity. He has celiac disease and they gave him a diet to follow. When he does have even a little bit of food with gluten, he gets very uncomfortable and has a sick tummy. It's not worth it!!
Kudos to you for following your path to better health!! One question: what is "avoiding nightshades"?? Curious now!

I deal with similar pain issues stemming from my eyes - specifically the trochlear area. Sorry to hear you deal with that, too. Nightshades are vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes (except sweet potatoes), bell pepper, eggplant. They are inflammatory for some people.

I never knew you’d achieved such a difficult goal. Congratulations! This first pic was a year after my weightloss goal, size 2, in 2002. Trying to find a good "before" pic........ (taken in 2000, size 20). For some reason, my mom can't remember me being "big". Not sure why. I look completely different! Attachments:

sideways : Thank you. I'm sorry that you deal with that pain. Mine is closest to a migraine, but it's due to traumatic eye loss (from a gun accident). I've had dozens of eye surgeries to try to have an ocular implant "take". I went thru the process of removing everything artificial in the socket, which lasted for 40 years!! It was giving me even more pain. My surgeon removed every silicone bead in there and also the metal bb that was deeply lodged in my socket. It was a relief, but we haven't been able to use my own dermis fat grafts and have them stay in there!! They seem to get absorbed somewhere else!! I've been patched and in more pain for over 3 years now. Thanks for that info, and I wish you better pain-free days ahead! Hugs!

Mine has morphed into a chronic headache, too, though it’s not considered a migraine. It all stems from eye surgery I had nine years ago. I was in daily pain for years before it went into a remission, of sorts. Now, I get flare-ups a few times a year that last a month-six weeks. I get nerve blocks every five weeks, Botox every three months, and am on a few different preventative meds. I just recently got my medical marijuana card, but it will take awhile to figure out what works for me. I don’t wish this kind of pain on anyone. Wishing pain-free days for you, too! ❤️

They think that mine is from the 48 (or 49??) eye surgeries I've had. Each one creates new scar tissue and darn, it hurts SO much!! It's similar to a migraine at points in the day, but overall it's tremendous, intense pain. Medicare won't allow me to do Botox, but I had it once and it helped a lot!!
Not sure where you'd get the nerve blocks (you can PM me if it's too private), but that sounds like the answer. Also, can you tell me which preventative meds you're on. I'm only on Nortriptyline. Didn't know there was anything else!!
I've been able to get a MM card for years, but I never did it. I've never smoked anything, I hate the smell of marijuana, and I don't know how I'd react while on it for pain. I need to function, drive, etc. Unfortunately the mild opioids I'm on allow me to do that. Good luck to you!! Feel free to PM me with any more info!

Medicare won’t cover Botox for headache? That’s some BS. I’m a patient at a headache clinic and I get my nerve blocks there. They do the supraorbitals and supratrochlears on both sides, and then also the occipitals on both sides. As for the marijuana, I won’t smoke anything. There’s too much lung cancer in my family, so I stick to edibles, oils, etc. Nothing that requires inhalation into my lungs. I’ve only started with CBD gummies. There’s no THC in them, so they don’t get you high at all. That said, the gummies didn’t help that much during my last flare. So, it’s back to the dispensary to see what they recommend next. All the preventatives I’m on are off-label. I’m on Memantine (an Alzheimer’s drug), Cymbalta, and Naltrexone (a low dose) right now. I’ve also been on Keppra. I was also on Nortriptyline for awhile, but it caused some terrible dry mouth after awhile, and my headaches went into remission, so I went off of it.
