Where are my fellow "misophoniacs?"
I was just watching a YouTube video for a recipe and they heightened the chopping, mixing etc... sounds I guess for ASMR purposes and I literally cringed so much, I had to eventually turn it off.
Gah - I can't stand those sounds. They make me shudder. And not in a good way.

ME!!!!!
I can’t imagine listening to that stuff and enjoying it. It makes me want to crawl out of my skin.

It’s the only kind of media I can watch without shutting it right off. My brain is bad.

I'm a misophonic, and I have no idea what ASMR is. No no, don't tell me, I think I'm better off not knowing / watching / listening!

No no no no no. Please make it stop. I didn’t know what ASMR was so I looked it up a while ago. Not sure that was a good thing to do because now I’m even more aware and can’t seem to turn it off fast enough.

So first I googled asrm and came up with www.asrm.orgAmerican Society for Reproductive Medicine and I couldn't figure out the sound. Then I went back and googled asmr.

ASMR has helped me immensely since my husband died. I listen to it frequently. It's calming and brings things down a notch when I'm feeling sideways. I don't listen to food stuff...I listen to 'whispersred' and 'Gentle Whispering' on youtube. At first I found it odd, now it's a tool for falling asleep and keeping anxiety at bay.

omg it drives me up a wall! puts me on edge & makes my skin crawl. For awhile there Reese's pb cups commercials were all ASMR & I'd have to mute the tv every time they came on
I'm glad it works so well for some people and that they find it comforting. For me its the same as fingernails on a chalk board

I like some of the food videos because I enjoy cooking, which apparently includes the sounds of cooking. Beyond that, ASMR does nothing for me.

I don’t like it at all. I know it isn’t sexual at all, but when I first heard about it I thought the whispering ones were someone’s turn on and I couldn’t figure out.

I do find it annoying but it doesn't *quite* make my skin crawl. Usually.

So, I am a little confused on what ASMR is. Sometimes I'll be watching a YouTube video say about new iMacs. The YouTuber will suddenly say, "Here's a little ASMR for you", and it is the sound of him typing on the computer. Is that ASMR? So, I always thought ASMR was just sounds you hear, like typing, or chopping food, etc. But, it seems like there is more to it?

I LOVE it! (but I don't watch food stuff on youtube, so maybe wouldn't like it there). I love it for painting, sketching and cutting.

I enjoy it to quiet my mind at bedtime but I don’t listen to or watch any cooking or chopping or food prep ASMR at all.

My 9 year old LOVES ASMR but she does the whispering ones. She is the one who told me about it. Apparently it helps her sleep. This child has never slept! We’re talking wide awake all damn night from when she born until now. The last week or so, she’s been listening to ASMR for 30 min before bed after she takes her melatonin and she’s out for the night! She’s taken melatonin for years and never slept more than 2-3 hours at a time!
I’ve never listened or tried it. I do use the calm app when I’m feeling on edge and it works really well.

I hated ASMR at first, but, I like it selectively now. I love the King Arthur Instagram account where they do stories of a lady making all kinds of breads and things and the only sounds are the scraping of the bowl and adding flour, etc. I find that pretty soothing.

Only yesterday the BBC shared a video of a 84 year old man who has become a favourite with Asmr followers. They said he really helped them get through lockdown. He speaks in a very slow considered way. www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-derbyshire-57402080I was aware of ASmr in a vague way, but it's not something I seek out for myself.

Make room on the bench for me... where we can sit quietly, without rustling.

I started watching that and had to turn it off! I think my misophonia gets worse as I get older. Particularly mouth sounds, chewing, lip smacking and talking....some days poor OH can't even breathe right, lol.

I had to look it up, and I have never had this reaction to sounds. I just like them-or not.
