Well I just googled and that is interesting to me. I wonder if I have ASMR. I like noise. I have two birds that constantly tweet and that makes some people crazy. I find it very soothing to listen to podcasts and audio books through a Bluetooth eye mask while falling asleep. I love the sound of a thunderstorm with heavy rain when I am falling asleep. I have a very euphoric sensation when I get a facial. Smell is another thing I'm completely sensitive to. I like tangerine and vanilla mixed on my wrists and I get a tingling sensation when I smell them.
I am just very sensitive to the hearing, smell, and touch. In a positive way.

I had never heard of it. I listened to the BBC video and I instantly found myself loving it. Sometimes I have a real problem quieting my mind. Too much of nothing going on in there. I think I will have to explore it more.
On the other hand, I have misophonia and I HATE repetitive sounds. This summer, the constant whirl of the air conditioner is driving me crazy. Any day that is under 90 my air conditioner has to be off.

Not me. Gets me through many a sleepless night or anxious event. Like anything, you have to find your "sound" cue, or your "visual" cue that brings your own reaction. Some ASMR artists I find totally annoying, then again, I have a few that are total favorites and rely on them endlessly.
It's not for everyone, but for those of us who physically react to sounds, motions, scents, etc - it can be a lifesaver (not quite literally )

I watch one about junk journalling and it's all crinkly paper sounds, scissors cutting etc and it's not too bad. I don't find it relaxing and I certainly don't get any tingles, I'm more interested in the process and the finished page.

I like tangerine and vanilla mixed on my wrists and I get a tingling sensation when I smell them. I am just very sensitive to the hearing, smell, and touch. In a positive way. I’m the exact opposite. Other than maybe white noise fan type sounds that drown out the sound of my DH’s CPAP machine coming loose, I can’t think of any sound I want to intentionally seek out to listen to. I never turn on the radio when I’m working or have the tv playing in the background if I’m not actively watching something. I feel like I’m surrounded by noise pretty much from the minute I wake up until the minute the rest of my family (including the pets) go to bed. Or like now, when I’m up and the rest of them are still asleep. It’s nearly constant, all.freaking.day. I so look forward to that time of the day when they all shuffle off to bed so I can give my poor brain a rest from the constant assault of noise. I love my family, but damn they are noisy! ETA: I also almost always have the sound totally muted on my iPad and as often as possible on my phone other than alarms and the ring tone. I don’t like the keyboard clicking sounds, the random game noises, the camera shutter sounds, I hate them all and turn them off. The ones that make me the absolute most shabby are the pop up ads when I’m playing a game on my phone. They are so random and so loud, and the worst is when it’s an ad FOR THE GAME I’M CURRENTLY PLAYING. Seriously people, WTH? I’m playing your stupid game right now! Why do I need to see/hear an ad for it?

omg it drives me up a wall! puts me on edge & makes my skin crawl. For awhile there Reese's pb cups commercials were all ASMR & I'd have to mute the tv every time they came on I'm glad it works so well for some people and that they find it comforting. For me its the same as fingernails on a chalk board Agree. I'm glad it's helpful for some, but fingernails on a chalk board is exactly how it sounds to me.

I didn't have to turn it off right away - it didn't make me immediately irritated but I didn't love it either.

Only yesterday the BBC shared a video of a 84 year old man who has become a favourite with Asmr followers. They said he really helped them get through lockdown. He speaks in a very slow considered way. www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-derbyshire-57402080I was aware of ASmr in a vague way, but it's not something I seek out for myself. I don't mind his kind of ASMR - his voice is lovely and calming and I understand why people like him and find him soothing. This was the video I had to turn off yesterday vegan salads with annoying soundsI don't mind the softer sounds, but the crinkly, tapping sounds make my teeth itch.

My sister says things make her teeth itch. I’ve never heard anyone else ever use that expression but her.
I watched a tomato being slowly and calmly sliced once. The sound kind of bugged me but I was mesmerized by the repetitive slicing and the thin slices of tomato. And then the video reversed and the tomato got put back together. It was kind of calming and definitely spoke to my sense of order.

I find them soothing - the ones with things being repeatedly done, like candles being made etc... It's only sounds that make me homicidal.

I don't like the sound of ice in a glass, people whistling, chewing, singing a long to music. I am picky! I also can't watch tv shows with fake laughter anymore. I loved the show The Middle and I love The Goldbergs because they don't do it in those shows.

So I finally looked up the definition of ASMR...so the people who enjoy this actually feel a 'tingling sensation that begins in the scalp and moves down the neck and the upper spine" and that is triggered when they hear sounds?
Is that right? Wow, why is it that this is a trend just recently? Why was this never mentioned in the past? Put me on the "I find these sounds annoying and distracting" bench. Its everywhere now.

I’ve written this on the forum before, but one of my favorite things was watching the old 2Peas warehouse walks. I’d never heard of ASMR, but I loved listening to the sounds of the little crackling packages of embellishments. Ahhhhhh.

I can see how the British farmer’s voice could be soothing, and his message is positive. But then I listened to a few young women doing ASMR videos and the smacking tongue/mouth sounds made me shut them off immediately. That would drive me right off the edge…. Give me some calm, peaceful instrumental music and I’m good.

This is interesting! I've never heard of ASMR but after watching a couple of videos, I just feel creeped out! DS has a bad case of misophonia and struggles with it daily. I feel so badly for him as it's gotten worse as he's gotten older.

meeee!!! not so much sounds that are incidental, like chopping, cutting etc. if it's a cooking video- but those videos that have people whispering on purpose for ASMR purposes? or running their fingernails on something, crumpling paper, etc. to make those noises?? those are AWFUL! They DO make me shudder, but NOT in a good way.
ETA: it's not that I am misophonic (I think that's the word?) about noise in general- I love listening to videos with a babbling brook, birds, etc. or listening to a thunderstorm... it's the whispering, etc. noises in those ASMR-specific videos that I can't stand. Although now that I think about it, I *do* HATE the sound that someone's fingers make on steel guitar strings- it makes my skin crawl, and it bothers me so much that I can't listen to much guitar music.

I don’t have misophonia, ASMR just does nothing for me. I do like to watch cleaning videos but I can watch them on mute and get the same satisfaction.

I am so happy to hear there are so many misophoniacs here!
I get so frustrated with those noises and I do turn off shows, too. Hallmark movies were especially bad this year with the music overtaking the dialogue.

Love. Thank you, I’ll go watch him on youtube. I listened to ASMR for a while after reading a bit about it, and enjoyed some types - some are crafty! But although it’s non-sexual, and it’s the sounds, not the visual, some have such visual emphasis on young, beautiful women, it’s hard to imagine some aren’t watching/listening for a turn on.

I have no idea what this is, but now I think I'm going to have to look it up. I usually need something like a YT video or a podcast to fall asleep, but I'm picky about it. I have to be mildly interested, but not SO interested that it keeps me awake. Sometimes I like the listen to the same one over and over again, for months. There's one YTer who I "watch" a lot, and I've never even seen the whole 45 min. video. I fall asleep less than 10 minutes in, lol. And these aren't people that are boring, but their voices are soothing, and I enjoy what they're talking about.

Poor dh gets the brunt of it with all the noises he makes I have to turn off all sounds on my iPad & phone - the keyboard clicking on is the worst. I can deal with actual clicking when I type on a laptop but I don't want to hear it when I text, or the beeps & rings phones make. The vacuum makes me want to climb the wall as does the lawn mower. Anything rattling in a car - look out because I will pull over to try to make it stop

I feel so badly for him as it's gotten worse as he's gotten older. Same here - never heard of it but after reading this thread looked it up and found some You-Tube videos - not especially creeped out but I find it a bit unusual (at least to me) - like your DS, my sister has a bad case of misophonia. She really has all her life, but we didn't really know what it was when she was little. It too, has gotten worse as she had gotten older...I feel so bad for her. Things I don't even notice (like people clearing their throat, coughing or tapping their pens) - it will be so bad she has to leave and only then do I hear some noises. It must be miserable. She has left in the middle of movies because she couldn't tolerate someone's throat clearing and I didn't even noticed it.

I struggle with misophonia, but it seems to be mostly eating/chewing sounds. Most of the other ASMR stuff doesn't bother me.

Where are my fellow "misophoniacs?" I was just watching a YouTube video for a recipe and they heightened the chopping, mixing etc... sounds I guess for ASMR purposes and I literally cringed so much, I had to eventually turn it off. Gah - I can't stand those sounds. They make me shudder. And not in a good way. MEEEEEEE TOOOOOOOOOOO. There's one of someone crumbling chalk I came across on TikTok and it made me want to throw up.
