There is a discussion going on my local Moms group on FB. The general consensus is $18-$20 an hour. This is for a responsible teen/adult. Mother's helpers are younger girls with less experience and it seems to be about $10 an hour.
I rarely used a babysitter when my kids were little, but that sounds about right to me, I think I paid like $17 for a teen age girl about 8 years ago.
There are some comments like this "CA is just insane in every way in regards to finances. I’m sure in other states it’s still minimum wage to babysit." So..is that true? That it must be a California thing and now she's got me wondering. It would help if you say where you are from in your response, lol.

$20-$25 here. Kids in general don’t want to look after some one else’s “brats.” It’s “too much work.”

I used to pay $10-15 twenty years ago when my kids were younger. The higher end if we were staying out late or I needed the sitter to take them someplace.
$18-20 sounds about right to me now.

That doesn't seem outrageous to me. Of course my daughter is 21 and I live in MI and we never had anyone but family or after school care watch her. But it seems reasonable for CA I would think.

$15-20/hr here. I typically planned most nights out on a Friday when the community center hosted a parents night out for 20 bucks for 7-11p. DS enjoyed that so much more bc all his friends were there and there was so much to do.

My 18 year old is getting 10-15/hr this summer depending on how many kids they have.

IME, a babysitter never makes MORE than minimum wage and usually makes less. A nanny might, but not a babysitter. A mother's helper, IME, was never alone with the kids. It was a preteen child that came in to play with your kids and keep them busy so you could get a few things done around the house (or hide in the bedroom with a book ). Once they were 13ish and had completed a babysitting course, they could babysit and look after the kids while you went out for a few hours. There were a group of moms inflating the babysitting rates when my kids were young in WA. It was a weird circular thinking that the kids were worth more to you if you paid more for the babysitter, not that the babysitter had any more training or qualification to justify paying them more.

I'm in DFW and I have yet to figure out what the standard rates are. My teen babysits and she makes between $10-20 per hour depending on number of kids and their ages. ($10 was for a toddler who was already in bed for the evening) She doesn't have set rates though. The last time we hired a teen a few years ago, she had something specific for the number of kids. I think it was $16/hr.

WOW!! In central FL, the going rate is still about $10. I've only nannied infants to 8 year olds. I prefer to Nanny infants. I teach them how to speak clearly (no baby talk). All of the infants in my care can spell their names by the time they're 1. I LOVE Nannying and I only do it for upscale families who don't quibble about salary. I have to be on the same page as the parents are regarding the baby's care and routine.
I haven't Nannied in over 2 years but I used to get $15/hr to start and $20/hr for 2 babies. That's a lot down here!! I'm amazed at the prices of other "babysitters". The families I've worked for are looking for an experienced parent, CPR certified/current, educated; not the typical young teen who is willing to watch a baby for a few hours.

I don't know, but the other day on my ND I saw someone posting for a (full-fledged) nanny (not babysitter) for their newborn. She wanted alllll the bells and whistles, for $15 an hour. Our city's minimum wage is $16.69 so I thought "good luck with that" to myself.
What you list as wages sounds about right for Seattle, with the pay going up depending on number of children.
When I first started babysitting (in the dark ages...1972-ish) I made .50 an hour for up to about 3 children. out of curiosity PEAS....did you babysit? If so, how much did you make when you started and what year was it?

My neighborhood growing up was working class lower md class so I didn't get many big tips, lol. Still it was steady work and for a buck I could buy a 45.

I don't think it was really "done" back then. I primarily babysat for 4-5 familys in a very affluent area of town (Windermere, for locals). I would get tips when i would go with the familys for a long weekend on their boats/to their cabins/on vacation with them but that was about it. The summer I turned 16 I lived with a family (who I had been babysitting for for several years already) for the summer taking care of their children full time. Mom did not work outside the home. That must have been an awesome summer for her . I loved that family.

Yikes. DD (22) is home for the summer before starting grad school in August. Because of the Status of Forces agreement, she can't work on the Belgian economy and her job at the coffee shop on base fell through. She babysat today for $12 an hour. I thought that was a lot! I have no idea what the minimum wage is in Begium (or even what the average wage is. But she made $80 today instead of playing on her phone, so she was happy.

Well I live in California so not much help, but I’d factor in age of kids as well. If I got a babysitter that wasn’t my mom for my infant son I’d expect to pay $25 per hour. If he was a little older and less dependent on a caregiver I’d say it would be closer to $18-20.
You get what you pay for and if I want to trust the person watching my child I’ll pay a premium.

That might have been the summer of 1986? That family had a membership to the neighborhood pool and I loved to go hang out there and work on my tan while the kids played in the pool. I think the maximum I earned for a few hours was $2.50 per hour.

Yeah, my daughter won’t babysit any child not already potty trained, so she charges a bit less. The going rate for infants is higher.
And I should add that she’s doing one-off, short-term care, not full time work.

Thanks! You're sweet. In my past experience, I've been a paralegal for decades, and then worked at Jenny Craig (as a counselor and then their Program Director). I was an English major and I LOVE helping infants and toddlers speak clearly. HOWEVER, in my neighborhood here, babysitters charge $7 or $8/hr and parents are used to those fees! It might be that my neighborhood isn't too great. I have to drive far to work for families that I mesh with more easily. (No problem since I haven't been able to work for years. I stay home and care for DH, who needs me every day!). Thank you again!!

in san francisco,as a nanny (trained, first aid/cpr, trustline, etc) I made $25 one kid, $30 two kids and often got a tip on top of that. I was on the cheap side. and I drove.. sometimes I drove kids to school in their car, sometimes I drove a kid in my car. I would pay a teen about $20/hour now. I think the city paid $20 an hour when I watched a foster care 8 day old infant for a few weeks. so easy!!

Back when ds20 needed a babysitter, I paid $18/hr. Since we are in the same town, my response merely parrots yours. 😀
I think there is a different between a nanny or someone that babysits all day every day and a Friday night dinner and a movie babysitter. Ds had a nanny whose house I took him too, but she would have come to mine if I wanted her to. He was there from 7:30-5:30 m-f and sometimes early in the morning when I had meetings. We paid her $500/week. A babysitter for us was typically an evening gig by a college age girl with babysitter experience including cpr. That was $18/hour. Big difference, but that is what was happening in my area.

It’s been a few (6 or 7) years but I used to pay $5/hr for one kid and $7-8 if ods (who was around 12, old enough to be home alone but not old enough to babysit a toddler) was home but basically required no care. The sitter’s mom once told me they thought I overpaid and that they should return some of the payment. I said absolutely not, she was worth every penny in peace of mind. This was for an older teen for random evenings, not regular child care.

I think the going rate in our area is between $10-$15/hr (1-2 kids). My daughters don't babysit, but my friends sons/daughters do and that's what they get.

$18-$20 per hour is insane for a babysitter. Fast food places around here pay the same. Guess it somewhat depends on where you live.

We had a 13 year old girl come to watch our kid when DH and I had plans that took us in different directions on the same night a couple times. This was about 6 or so years ago and I’m pretty sure we paid her about $10 an hour back then. For a two hour stint with tip I think we paid her $25.
We’re in a fairly affluent area in the suburbs, and when DD was younger it was so hard to find anyone even willing to babysit that we would either take our kid with us (usually), or only one of us would go (DH has attended lots of work related contractor things alone), or we would just stay home.
Most of the babysitting aged kids now are so busy with sports or other extra curricular activities that they simply don’t have the time to watch someone else’s kids no matter what the rate of pay might be.
