Just curious if anyone else shipped off a soldier trainee after HS graduation? Hope the getting prepared or having them gone has gone well! My DD is ARNG and will go straight to training after BCT so will be gone about 4 months. The FB support groups have been great! Pretty much answered all my questions and prepared me for what to expect plus helped her with a few things before she left. She had a list of only 6 items to pack from her SSgt in the sustainment program and we found better lists lists so hopefully she went a little more prepared (moleskin now, don't wait for mom to mail it). Feel like I'm a little out of place in the FB support groups, though, since she's been gone 4 days and I didn't cry at all when we dropped her off or after. Seems like a lot of the moms are struggling, lots of tears, etc. I'm guessing when those moms got their quick call to let them know their trainee arrived safely, they also didn't get "now don't say anything sad to make me cry and look like a little b!tch" from their trainee. Geesh, there may be a reason I haven't been sad to see her gone yet  FWIW, which I've probably said it before, she's the kid I'm closest to and the sweetest, but she has a devilish streak a mile wide! |

(((Hugs))) I felt/feel out of place on the Navymom groups also because like you I didn't cry when I sent mine off to basic in 2015. He was older though - 24 not just out of high school.
All the best to your daughter - write to her often and stay encouraging.

My daughter went into the Navy right out of high school and I cried like she died. Maybe it was different for me because she's my only and I was a single mom since she was 7. She's now going into her 6th year, and I no longer cry when she leaves after coming home on leave. I'm happy to have my peaceful, tidy house back

My son just graduated from Basic 2 weeks ago! He is now at AIT. He is also older, 23, so I haven't been too sad as he has been on a 2 year mission for our church and living with roommates before he left for Basic. He is National Guard, so after AIT and a few weeks at Air Borne training, he will be back to finish college.
Best of luck! Write all the letters!

My kid is at basic for AF, due to graduate in a week and then off to tech school. No hug (he's not a hugger), no tears. Just "don't piss off your drill Sgt and call home." I did cry a little bit when he gave a little wave before going into the recruiter's office. I didn't even get to take him to the airport or anything unlike other parents.
I'm in two groups, one general and one just for basic. Holy crap. The constant tears, constant helicoptering, requests for prayers over the dumbest shit. I'm so out of place as I'm an atheist. I stay because there are questions that I'm sure I'll have depending on where he goes. Basic graduations are not open yet and there's parents trying to figure out which airport they'd be using to fly from basic to tech school, what time, etc and actually spending $$ just to sit in an airport in hopes of seeing their kid. Stalker much? I'm just waiting for my kid to tell me if he's even going to come home for a few days after training.

(Boot camp seems so long ago.) I belong to the Navy for Moms group on Facebook for their area. You do have to take those groups at face value. Some of the posts are patently ridiculous while others are just pitiful. They show a real cross section of experiences. Congratulations to all who have kids at boot camp or in the service. I’m so proud of my two. It’s a noble choice for these kids. |

My DS2 went to Army boot camp last September. It wasn't all that hard for me because he had already been in college and had moved off for that. He graduated bootcamp last November, but because of Covid we didn't get to go see him graduate. He came home for HBL in December and then he went to AIT school for 14 weeks. Still didn't get to see him graduate AIT because of Covid and bases being closed. He is now stationed in Hawaii and we were planning to go over there in July but found out yesterday the Army is sending him to training in Kentucky starting June 30 and will be there til Aug. So today I canceled all of our tickets and have fingers crossed we will get to see him in Kentucky. If not, we will go to Hawaii in September/October. Its been over 6 months and I am ready to see my soldier, lol.
I was in the Ft. Sill Bootcamp group and it was way too drama filled for me. The FB group for 68Whiskey Ft Sam was pretty informative as is the Parents of Scholfield FB page.
I remember some of the things parents were doing at bootcamp (sending cellphones in tampon boxes to their soldier, asking if they could send a cake to their bootcamp group, etc) and I just cringe. DS2 would absolutely disown me if I did any of that.

Last month was my YDS's 4th anniversary in the Navy. He went in after 1 yr of miserable college. He left the day after Mother's Day. I bawled like a baby due to a letter he gave me that Saturday night. But I was good during BC. Until graduation. Nothing was keeping me from that.
I've been good for the most part during the following years. Except at holiday time. A major funk comes over me. I am used to not hearing from him for long stretches. I am in a couple of Navy Mom groups. I will admit to worrying about some moms in those groups. There are some apron strings that need to be cut.
I'm not sure if one ever gets used to it, but you learn to live with things. And I am so proud of all he has accomplished in his time!

Coast Guard mom here, although mine was 27 and a mom of 2 when she went in it wasn't any easier. Her husband went in in 2014, she in 2017. She loves her choice (works in an office on base, so doesn't go out on the cutter). I know when she was in BC there were FB groups for each class, just for the parents. Isn't there something like that? There is also a group for moms/grandma's no matter how long they have been in.

We’re a military family. When I left for basic a million years ago, I hopped on that bus and didn’t look back. I don’t know if my mom cried. When DS left for basic I didn’t cry. When we visited him before he deployed I might have been a little teary eyed when we left. In my defense, he was infantry getting ready to deploy to Afghanistan after the deadliest year for US troops. You’ll find that parents run the gamut just like anywhere. I’m sure there is some drama at college drop offs as well.

Not the mom, but my young relative who has been living with us, I call her my cousin, is at Basic right now for the CA Air National Guard. She has been living with us for 2 yrs and will come back after. COVID has throw a bunch of wrenches in her training so she was excited to finally get dates for Basic as she has been waiting for more than half a year. I haven't heard from her but I have talked to her mom who has and things are going well. I'm unsure if, when, I should make travel plans or even if they are having visitors for graduation.

Navy mom! It has been three years that he has been in. I cried and cried when he left. He was ready to go. The days leading up to him leaving were awful. I was sad and he was ready. He graduated in May and left in June. He is currently deployed and I miss getting snapchats and the occasional phone call from him but it has been so good for him. I belong to the navy mom groups on facebook but don't get overly involved. I am however involved in his FRG and ombudsman page. That's where the real info is at!

Thanks for the stories and advice, it totally warms my heart to hear them  and I have to say I have a TON of respect for active duty moms, I consider myself pretty lucky we'll get her back and if she opts to be deployed, it sounds like its basically voluntary in her unit. |

I’m an AF mom… he just got out after serving seven years. I cried when he left but it was more for his little sister who was only five and her heart was so broken because he was her buddy. She has a special bond with him more than her sister. I would have probably cried anyways but it would have just been for a bit. I was so proud of him. Right after high school too. My thoughts were that I raised him right and he is out to make a living and not sitting in my house and playing video games.. lol
The message board I was on for his group was pretty good. So much help to us kinda knowing what was going on.
What made me go a bit crazy was friends who’s kids were leaving for college … you would have thought they were never going to see their kid again. Most of them were home every weekend. The tears and drama was killing me. I couldn’t talk to my kid for weeks and weeks and they were the ones blubbering over stupid stuff. They never had to go through no phone calls or text or anything like that. I just rolled my eyeballs at them. Lol

She has a special bond with him more than her sister. my oldest (Navy Sailor) is almost exactly 15 years older than my youngest. When he went in at 24, she had just turned 9. They were super close also and it was really hard for her - especially since he went to Japan for 3.5 years after Basic/A-school - he was home on leave for 10 days in between and not again until after he was back stateside. |

Finally got our first letter from my cousin. She is doing well and passed the physical test. No in person grad so at least I don't need to worry about coordinating that. It was really nice to hear from her!
