We got our federal tax refund today (paper check in the mail) and it is several hundred dollars more than our tax return said we would be getting. We had the return done by a tax pro, so I would expect they were done correctly. Once when I was doing our taxes myself I made an error and the IRS caught it and sent a bigger check, but also a letter explaining the situation. No letter this time, but I suppose it could be arriving later. I looked on the IRS website and couldn't find a place to check for more info on this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
I am going to wait until our state refund arrives to see if that one is also a different amount, and then contact the tax office. I wish I knew if this was our money or not!

Did you have unemployment? The government changed their mind about collecting tax on it and are refunding people back that money if it was taken from their unemployment payments.

If you had it done by a tax pro, the communication could have come to them, so give them a call. Otherwise I'm sure the letter is on the way. Hopefully you won't have to call them - I sat on hold for 2 hours last week for them to fix a simple problem.

The IRS could have made an error. I spent 45 minutes on the phone with a helpful IRS today correcting a payroll tax problem. Seems the IRS applied payments to the wrong quarters.

My answer is you may never know but I’d start with your tax preparer. We just got our 2019 return as a paper check and we had filed electronically with direct deposit in Feb 2020.

Sometimes the letter comes several days later explaining what went on.

I filed mine myself and they reduced my refund. I got the refund 13 days ago and I'm still waiting for a letter of explanation. I know one's coming eventually. It's the IRS, so I'm prepared to wait.

Could be interest since you received it after the filing deadline. Your tax preparer will not get a notice unless you have filed a separate form with them to receive notices.

We got a tax refund check and then a few days later a letter. The amount in the letter was different from check (check was more). Looking closer at the check in the memo line it noted that $x.xx was included for interest. Does your check have a note about interest?

I checked the memo line, and it does list a small $ amount as interest, but that still leaves the several hundred dollars unaccounted for. Guess I'll keep an eye out for a letter.

QueenoftheSloths , do you remember what month your federal tax return was filed? ETA: One other question. Did you get your health insurance from the marketplace in 2020?
