I constantly wish that someone will find the exact right mend for you. I'm so sorry your surgeon is moving. Where is she going to? Will she still be able to advise you and such from afar? Wishing your Dh a beautifully clear scan! She's moving to Michigan where her family is. She and her hubby had baby boy after trying for 10 years, so she wants family close. She's opening her own oculoplasty practice. Her advice was that she could still try 1 more liposuction surgery (they insert it into my socket), but I've somehow reabsorbed that fat, membrane, etc. I don't seem to even want my own body parts moved around. It's a very odd case. She also warned me not to believe other surgeons in FL because they aren't experienced in this specific field. I have a wonderful 2nd opinion with her mentor. She did give me 2 names of the best eye surgeons, but they're pretty far from us. DH really isn't driving anymore and I'd never be able to drive to them. I feel good to have their names in case of an emergency though. Thanks for your words and advice.

Is your surgeon a fellowship trained oculoplastics surgeon? I would seek out another (maybe even younger) fellowship trained oculoplastics surgeon for another opinion, just because a newer fellowship trained surgeon may have been exposed to newer techniques. It’s such a super specialized area and there are not really a ton in that field! I am reminded of a friend’s surgeon who said nothing else could be done for her abdominal wall, that there was nothing else left to build up to substitute for the missing muscle (after failed surgery and a massive infection). A few years later, she got another opinion. That next series of surgeries was life changing and allowed her to live a normal life. Happy to see your dh’s news! Oh yes!! Her name is Dr. Jasmina Bajric and she headed USF Eye Institute, she was the on-call eye for most of the FL sports teams, she trained and mentored a lot of new doctors, and she was mentored by the very best. Her mentor trained with my original eye surgeon in Manhattan, so they already heard about my case and how I was the first one in the world with this silicone beads implant. Dr. Bajric is pretty young and she was certain that she could fiigure it out for me. She was able to retrieve the BB that destroyed my eye. No one has done that since it happened in 1974. I hold her in high regard. She also removed each silicone bead implant (10 hour surgery). Many were embedded in my ocular bones. She got them all out and it did stop certain pain. Rebuilding my socket with my own membrane and fat proved to be an issue, as I was reabsorbing and basically rejecting them too. If we ever get to move back to NY, I'd consider going to my initial surgeon's practice and see what they thought. Most other surgeons's won't even consider taking my case. When you've had over 40 surgeries, they don't want to try to fix it. It only creates more scar tissue and even more pain. Thanks for your advice. I appreciate hearing from you.

I'm so sorry. I can somewhat empathise because I'm sitting here with no hair, one breast, one disfigured arm and the other with a PICC line in it. There is no way to look "normal" for me at the moment and I'm not enjoying it, however (some of) it is temporary. Looks are less important than pain though. Are you still in pain with your eye? Big hugs to you. My heart goes out to you. I hope that things could be surgically repaired for you. So sorry about the pain. And, YES, I haven't remembered what it's like not to be in chronic pain since the day I was shot. Over the 47 years since it happened, the pain got worse. It's because I've had more than 40 eye surgeries (probably closer to 50) and each one causes more scar tissue. It's a "battlefield" in my eye socket and it pains me every minute of the day. I'm on Rxs for the pain but I still need to fight it off in bed for some days. I remind myself that it's just pain and that level ebbs and flows. Sad to have a vomit bin next to my bed for the pain, but that's my life and it's my norm. Not complaining. Prayers to you for healing up. Xo I was really hoping that you weren't in as much pain any more. I'm so sorry!

She sounds like a superwoman/superdoc! Sorry she is moving away! She really is! Her energy and expertise floored us. That 10 hour surgery was done on her birthday and she wouldn't stop until she got every bit of silicone out of my socket. She gave 1 silicone bead to DH and the BB that was in there forever. He made a necklace for me. I wear it proudly, knowing that all of that foreign matter is out of me now.

Have you ever use molded eye patches. My friend worked in stage/craft and he would post the most incredible matchup/ masks. It would be the same as one that goes in your socket, but might be less noticeable than a patch. NO! I've never heard of these! Can you message me with any more info or a pic?? Not sure I'd be a candidate since I become allergic even to the tape holding a cotton patch on my eye. It has to be paper. I wear a black leather patch made by this wonderful man in Japan. It's high quality leather, but it becomes a real drag to wear it all day.

My friend said you need to find a special effects makeup artist who specializes in prosthetic pieces. He is looking through his friends to see if they have any good contacts.

Thank you magellen. I had Ocularists--they're the ones who create a prosthetic eye (like a thick contact lens, made out of acrylic), but never heard of anything else. I appreciate your reaching out to your friend. Thank you so much. xo

But he is looking someone new.

It began in Germany after soldiers needed prosthetic eyes. It's interesting, but it's a dying art. Hard to find a good one down here in FL.
