Another proud Pea Aunty (love that moniker!) here. Longtime ally. (BTW, I don't give myself that title, which is an honor. I have been given it by LGBTQ+ teens, adults and elders as they've seen me volunteer on their behalf, march with them, etc. year after year.)

Acceptance can only bring you closer as they/he/she will feel safe. You (general) don't get the whole kid when they feel the need to hide or aren't comfortable sharing. As much as I've been an LGBTQ+ ally for 30 years, it was different when it was my child and the learning was mine to do as to how to be there, be listening, be supportive when my child told me that they were not who I thought they were. But, they are themselves! And they are an amazing human who I couldn't love any more - no matter their gender or pronoun. The only sadness has been seeing them hurt when people are cruel - as they so often can be - especially older people. But they are learning to move through that. PLurker - that podcast was so freaking wonderful. I have tears in my eyes. What a human Ollie is. I wish I could let them know how much gratitude I have for their passion and compassion and intelligence and kindness. Please give them a virtual hug from a pea. And the person Ollie was speaking to was so open too. It was a joy to hear. (Not to mention those lovely midwest accents that I grew up with LOVE THE WORLD THEY'RE BUILDING. LOVE THESE AMAZING KIDS OF OURS. Yes. Exactly this. It gives me hope.

Nope, not just Mama pride. You are absolutely correct. Ollie comes across as kind, articulate and intelligent. I enjoyed listening and learning a bit more about the pronoun issue. It is confusing, but something worth getting used to. All youth - every last one of them - need to have the opportunity to feel safe in their own skin. Thanks for sharing this, and thanks to Ollie for helping spearhead this valuable group.

Thanks to all who commented so positively about my kid. Warms my heart. ( and brings on the waterworksπ) It's great to hear from non biased people that you too see that little something special in this kid of mine after just a glimpse of them. It validates what I have seen through my mama goggles over the years.
Hugs to you and all your kids and family. May they all live the lives they are meant to, free to be themselves happily and openly and without fear. β€οΈπ§‘ππππ

I finally got a chance to watch, just wonderful! You have every reason to be so very proud of the brave, articulate, kind and bright kid you raised!
I work in a summer camp and one of the kids was working on a drawing of their stuffy and they put the stuffyβs name on it and under it they had βhe/himβ. I loved how natural and unconsciously it was done. Kids today give me so much hope.

Young people like Ollie are gonna save us all. That was amazing! Congrats, mom! My proud mom brag about my non-binary young adult is that they are working their first job as an RN at a clinic that services mostly uninsured, ESL, and marginalized clientele. And theyβre administering lots of Covid vaccines right now, which also makes me proud.

ETA finsup I think the common denominator is empathy. They have it more naturally through their personal experiences. My DNB actually has a tattoo of simply the word "empathy". Speaks volumes, no?! The only part I don't like (yet love) is that they insisted on it being in my handwriting.π€’/β€οΈ
