All gun owners claim they are “responsible “ gun owners yet things like this keep happening.
Yes, those kids should not been left alone but more importantly that gun shouldn’t have been left in a cabinet.
That’s twice now in the last several weeks where kids have found loaded guns.
The first being the 12 & 14 year olds who broke into a home and found several guns.

“ The incident occurred at approximately 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, in the Tioga-Nicetown area of Philadelphia when the 10-year-old boy, along with his 8-year-old sister, were home alone and reportedly discovered a gun that was in a cabinet, according to ABC News' Philadelphia station WPVI.”
“ Police said that the gun should never have been out in the open to begin with and that the children should not have been left at home alone either. It is unclear how long the children had been on their own for or where their parents were at the time of the shooting.
“[The gun] was freely acceisble to the children,” Police Capt. Strollo told WPVI. “They should be locked up, at least in a lock box, with only the adult owner having possession of that key.”

and it will continue to happen. over and over again. as aghast as all the actual responsible gun owners are - "that never should have happened!!!".
i was shot at a friend's house when i was 12 years old by my friend's 14 year old brother. there was a loaded .22 rifle on the wall, with a 2 year old, 10 year old and 14 year old...
the parents left with the baby and my friend and i were swimming (!) in their pool in the backyard and came inside. brother pulled the rifle off the wall, pointed it at me, and said "that's weird, the safety is off". i was scared and moved a bit to the right. he pulled the trigger and when i looked down at my burning arm, there was an entry wound and an exit wound. had i not moved, it could have gone thru the middle of my chest.
cops went back to their house later that night after the hospital called the police when a 12 year old gunshot victim arrived. parents had come home, my blood was on the carpet, a bullet hole in their living room floor and they WENT TO BED. they told the police they had chickens and kept the loaded gun to scare away foxes.
to them, that made total sense.

“When deputies responded to the scene they were eventually able to locate 62-year-old Danny Andrew Smith who was unresponsive as he was slumped over the steering wheel of his tractor which was still running but had gone down an embankment before striking a tree.
Following an investigation into the incident, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office announced that a petition had been filed in Family Court charging an 8-year-old boy and a 9-year-old boy with involuntary manslaughter regarding the shooting death of Smith, according to the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office.
“After a consultation with the Solicitor’s Office, and based on the evidence obtained in our ongoing investigation, we believe that both juvenile males discharged a firearm in a reckless manner in the direction of Mr. Smith who was bush hogging on some family property,” said Oconee County Sheriff Mike Crenshaw. “At this time, it is still undetermined which shot ultimately struck and killed Mr. Smith. However, based upon South Carolina law, the hand of one is the hand of all and that is why Family Court has been petitioned in regards to charging both juveniles with Involuntary Manslaughter.”
Based upon evidence obtained during the investigation as well as from the autopsy, authorities determined that Smith had sustained a single gunshot wound to the back which ultimately killed him.

In South Carolina, juveniles under the age of 10 cannot be detained so both of the juvenile suspects have been remanded to the custody of their parents as the judicial proceedings continue, according to Sheriff Crenshaw.
“The Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation and due to that fact, no information will be released that will identify the juveniles in this case,” said Oconee County Sheriff’s Office. “At this time, no information about motive or where the firearm was obtained will be released due to the ongoing investigation and any additional details will be released as conditions and developments warrant.”

The weapon that was allegedly used in the shooting, a .22 caliber rifle, has been recovered and examined by the SLED forensics lab in Columbia, South Carolina.

So in what world does anyone think it’s acceptable to allow 2 kids, 8 & 9 to wander around with a rifle unsupervised?

It only takes one mistake, and it is a tragedy.
I am a gun owner, and our guns are always under lock and the ammo is in a different safe under lock. Something could still go tragically wrong. There is no doubt about it.
My kids were taught from as soon as possible about gun safety. I was the freak out Mom when it came to play guns and pointing them at people. I wouldn't even go for Nerf guns being shot at people. It is just a hard NO 100% of the time. Never EVER point any type of gun at a person ever. I was not above yelling at someones kid who broke that rule. I also found out some kids never get yelled at (when they need it). My kids always check a gun when they pick it up, even if the person handing it to them checked it right before handing it off. It's habit, that is what guns safety is.
I was proud of my kid, who went to school sanctioned trap shoot/picnic. He immediately felt unsafe there. He told the teachers/sponsors of the event that things were unsafe and they basically laughed him off. He put his gun in the case and left. Nothing bad happened that night, but my kid knew what to do, because he was always taught gun safety is a #1 priority, 100% of the time. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who think they are all that with guns that are the worst offenders.
People that allow unsafe guns in their home should be fully prosecuted. If they don't have it ingrained in their kids' head that you don't fuck around with any firearm, and this kind of tragedy happens, the gun owner should be held for murder.

Trigger warning: child death In my small, rural valley (population MAYBE 5K) an 11yo boy died from a gunshot last year. He went into the house to get a BB gun and grabbed a loaded handgun instead… they’re not sure if it was intentional or accidental. As he was carrying it down the hall it discharged, shooting him in the chest. His brother (13, I think?) was in the house with him, his mom outside.
And yet, in my small, conservative town, it’s just sort of viewed as a normal tragedy. Because farm life. And I don’t understand it. |

Look, I was a public defender, and the number of homicide cases I had where no one would be dead if someone did not have a gun and make a bad decision was high. Very few plotted murders; lots of people who were law-abiding folks who got into a fight and had a gun.
Full disclosure, I had an alcoholic father who was law-abiding but had an unsecured handgun, and I spent my whole life in that house afraid of what he might do while drunk or on pills.

My mom’s immediate response to this was to blame video games. When I pointed out that they play the same video games all over the world and don’t have the same gun violence, she didn’t really have anything further to say. I told her I blamed the parents, who kept a handgun, loaded, where their kids could easily access it. |

What The Ever Loving Fuck Wow. I agree with others, everyone is a responsible gun owner until they’re not. We own guns but ours are disassembled, stored in a safe, and the ammo is not accessible. They were my husbands hobby when he was single. Now, we’d be up the creek if we needed to actually use one because it would take an hour to get to anything. His are collectors items more than safety equipment. Eta I’m not even sure hubby knows where he put the code for the safe. I certainly don’t know it. |

I guess the question we should be asking ourselves is do we want our kids to grow up in a country when two guys get in an argument on some sports field and one guy threatens the other guy with a gun. On a field full of kids.
