Man, I typed out a reply last night... must not have hit "create post." Thanks for asking summer . We have rented 3 AirBnbs, one in Lafayette and 2 in Walnut Creek. They are 15 and 20 minute drives from DD's place. Fingers crossed that they're legit and will be as good as they appear to be. One is a duplex. We'll be on the ground floor with my 89 yo mom, my sister and our son. Our best friends (coming from Canada) will be upstairs in their own 3 bed unit with one daughter on her own and one daughter with her fiance. Fun! That sounds great. I didn’t get back to you in a timely manner (sorry), but my contact was very much NOT in favor of the neighborhood where the big Oakland house was located. I agree the big Oakland house was not in a good area! Your new places sound perfect. Both have great downtowns too! Fingers crossed our wildfire season doesn’t affect you Eta - if you give me the Lafayette address I could even drive by and check it out for you! Lol

We ruled that one out pretty quickly. Grateful for all the info available online and from online friends too.

But they’re both nice towns and any neighborhood should be fine. flanz

I don't have it handy, may get back to you. (I saw the listing but DH made the arrangements.) The duplex in WC is one I'd love to have verified somehow. The listing had only one review (but said it was a newly renovated property, which it def. looks like) but it feels almost too good to be true... I've been reading about AirBnB scams and am a bit concerned, DH told me to relax and trust...

summer and lucyg - i think i love you! Already like you both a ton. I'll pm you later today or tomorrow with the listings and street addresses. Would love to know if you have any red flags raised with either listing, esp. the duplex.

ETA I see your latest post and will look forward to our snooping assignment.

When my ODS and DIL started wedding planning I wrote them a check and told them to use it however they wanted. They used it to pay for their honeymoon. It was a gift so I was fine with whatever they would have chosen to do with it.

The check will be substantial enough that it will cover a very nice wedding, assuming the groom's family helps a bit and the happy couple pitches in a bit as well. I am curious as to what amount is a 'very nice' wedding. Not specifically what you paid, but what would everyone think in general? I know wedding costs are all over the place, and a lot depends on the area you live in. Our daughters wedding was a couple years ago, and I never really sat down and totaled it up. She paid for the photographer and bought her own dress, against my protest, but she did it anyway. She could easily afford it, and I know it was less that 1K, because I laughed and told her I paid more for her 2 prom dresses! They had around 225 guests. The caterer was $2250 plus tip (and their food is flat out amazing!). Amazing venue (had access for 5 days) was $800. DJ, decorations, invites, was probably around $1500. Grooms parents paid 1500 for the open bar and we picked up the rest of the night after that, and it was around $700. That wouldn't come close to a down payment - even on cheap houses! LOL And it was a really nice wedding! Not a dripping diamonds ice sculpture type of wedding, but a very enjoyable tasteful wedding. Both are at that age where friends are getting married and both are annoyed at how needy everyone is. Engagement parties. Bachlorette parties at locations that require flying somewhere and spending lots of $. And then the showers. And finally the actual wedding. Whew - this is my younger daughter. The engagement parties, bachelorette parties, and all that goes with those. Some destination weddings, etc. It is just crazy how some of these become such an event, and the couple just seems miserable and fights all the time.
