What about a key chain that says "HOME" (engraved or not) and a key to the house? I'm grateful this young man has your support. Carrie I liked all of the very thoughtful suggestions, above, and I think this one is closest to what I was thinking of is peas&carrots idea for a keychain that says "home." It doesn't presume to step in as a second mom, but it makes him feel your home is truly his home. (Kind of like getting key to the city.) I think a family dinner and giving him the gift would be very memorable.

Thank you again everyone! I love all of these ideas! Right now, I’m leaning toward a key chain with a house key and some of the things you suggested—coordinates to our home, the word “Home” and/or a message from us on the back. I just I hope I can order something so it arrives in time! I like the necklace idea, too, but he loves the two he wears and I’m not sure he’d wear a 3rd. Of course, I’m going to write in a card as well. Thanks again for all of your kind words, too. We truly love him and are so happy he’s here. It’s been quite the journey. I'm going to be a downer here.... Suggesting not putting coordinates on a key fob... The wrong person could find your house.

What about a tie tack and cuff links. My thought is they will be there for all his special days to come, just like you and your husband.

Our kids are grown and live out of state and they don't have a house key, we have a combo door lock.

I think I will just use the idea that someone suggested of the word “home” because I really like that, too.

Piggybacking on Dewryce's "warm blanket" comment, what about a really cozy blanket or throw that you could have embroidered with some of the home ideas mentioned for the key fob, above? Wouldn't be necessarily appropriate at this moment (unless you keep your home chilly, as we do), but it just reminds me of a hug that he can always wrap around him.

Next week we have our court date where my husband and I will become the legal guardians of a 16 year old young man. He's been a part of my life since he was 9 years old and has lived with us permanently for the past year. I would like to get him something to commemorate the importance and significance of this day, but I'm struggling to come up with something meaningful. Any ideas/suggestions? A key yo the house, on an engraved keychain

Thank you all again so very much for your great ideas and very kind words! I ordered a keychain from Etsy last night--put "Home" on the front and "Always here. Love, (our names)" on the back. The great shop owner already shipped it today. Please keep your fingers crossed for me that it arrives by Tuesday! I'll also write him a note in a card and I'm planning on letting him choose dinner and getting a DQ ice cream cake to celebrate. I hope it's a great day for him! THANKS AGAIN!
