We travelled with dh in June, less than 6 weeks after his gallbladder surgery. It was a lot of work for dd and I because he couldn’t do anything (lifting/schlepping).
The first few days after surgery dh was pretty groggy / tired / sore. 5 days later he wanted to go into the office for a few hours so I drove him. I drove him in the next few days. By 8 days post he drove himself. He felt nauseated a bit at work from pain / being tired / over doing it.

Give him a couple of weeks. Most of us who bounced right back were probably younger. My ex had something similar to your dad - they went in at one hospital and did the gall bladder, but there were stones the surgeon could get in the bile duct, so they closed him up and sent him to another hospital. Even though both were laparoscopic, it was two surgeries back to back, and he was probably out of work 2 weeks. He would have been 37 then.

I had gallbladder and appendix out at same time, I thought pain was minimal during recovery. I took 3 weeks off from work(Grocery store) but could've gone back after 2. The only reason I took that 3rd week was because my Navy kid was home from his ship that week and I wanted to hang out some with him--my surgeon is a family friend so he wrote my note for work to include that 3rd week. Maybe I'm not a good one to ask, I've had 9 surgeries and it was one of the easiest.

I had emergency gall bladder surgery last August on a Thursday. Friday I was on the couch the whole day - not so much because I felt awful, but because I had to be VERY close to the bathroom. Saturday got better and by Sunday I was at about 80%. Monday I felt nearly 100%. I say nearly because my stomach still hurt a bit, but it didn't affect me at all. My cousin's husband had his surgery 2 weeks prior to mine and went back to work 3 weeks later, still feeling awful. I am otherwise extremely healthy (so was he), so I think it really depends. My sister had it in her 30s and was up and about in 3 days in a normal routine as well. I think 2 surgeries may mean something is stuck and that could be worse. FWIW jeremysgirl , I didn't realize how much I had been suffering over the years with constant stomachaches I ignored. I have not had one stomachache in the past year AND I can eat ice cream again!!!I thought I had pulled a muscle in my back for TWO YEARS from rollerblading. Turns out, that was the gall bladder pain, in my lower back, radiating towards my left shoulder. I had lapro. surgery. In and out, but took me a full week to recover and I really really really hated to wear pants/skirts around my waist for a couple of weeks. I just hated the feeling of something touching my skin.

As of right now, he is planning on going on the trip. He is home, but still has a fever and some kind of drainage port? He goes back to the doctor tomorrow.
