From time to time I have read here that a pea waited to get into Costco --that seems to be the most often mentioned.
I don't have a Costco convenient to shop there, but we do have a Sam's.
I have never had to wait in line to enter a store. Wondered how prevalent waiting might be.
ETA: During covid we have used the Target early shopping for elderly and went right in. However, one day there was a line of young people who were trying to get in early and the Target employees were making them line up and wait until the store opened to everyone.

I don’t remember any waiting pre-COVID except for concert tickets. TicketBastards.
We had to wait once at the very beginning in March (checked my calendar, the 14th). Pea warnings had us starting to buy some things in the prior weeks, thank goodness, but not enough to quarantine for 2 weeks. As y’all know it was so eye-opening.

You live in Texas, right? That’s why you didn’t have to wait in line 🤣 My small town had lines for our only grocery store, over an hour before they opened.

Never pre-covid. Our grocery store had a line a few times at the height of covid when capacity was limited to 25% Had to wait a few minutes for some people to exit the store. It was barely a line.

I waited in line at Costco, my local grocery store and the license plate registry office during Covid ... now it looks like lines only still exist at the registry office

The only store I had to wait outside of was Trader Joes, and it was only 5 minutes or so. The had a system where they only had enough carts available for the store capacity, so each person going in was given a cart, and it was one person per cart. Then as people came out their cart was sanitized and given to the next person in line. It worked very smoothly.

I used to wait in line at the store around opening every few days during the beginning of covid. Often it was the best way to get the food we needed during big shortages. I did not wait in lines most of the time otherwise - if it was an hour or two to get into Costco I didn’t go, I just got instacart instead (and tipped appropriately if my shopper had to wait).

very rarely do I ever need to (or want to) wait in line for any store. A couple of them were during the beginning of Covid- one time was waiting at the grocery store to get in RIGHT after the senior citizens' hour, right when they opened to the general public, because I *needed* toilet paper. Really bad. And guess what? By the time all the senior citizens finished shopping, they had bought it all and I couldn't buy any, anyway! poop! (pun intended ) The only other occasion we waited in line in recent years was waiting in line at a bookstore to get a book signed by the author.

Until COVID, never, other than sample sales in Manhattan when I lived there (although even those, I got the times for in the Village Voice and usually got there before the lines formed).
Now, it's pretty common, because in particular, the craft and bookstores here have had limited entry (my yarn store really can only hold a couple of people if they are supposed to socially distance -- it's tiny!)
I haven't had to stand in line for grocery stores, but I shop early in the AM and just didn't go to TJ's when they had lines.
It drives my husband insane, but I hate waiting in lines for pretty much anything (this is an issue for no-reservations restaurants where I am like, no, honey, I don't want to wait forty minutes outside for a table) (although if you give me a bar stool and a cocktail I'll wait as long as you like).

Stores in Europe are often small and only allow one customer at a time. This is still ongoing, so yes. I often wait to enter a store.

Waited a few times at Costco and Trader Joe's during Covid restrictions. Both times the lines were pretty quick.

Pre-Covid - Never, that I can recall.
From March 2020 to about May 2021 - A few times, mostly at Trader Joe's, but the wait wasn't long. I also waited at Barnes & Noble and Walmart once. I couldn't pick two options, but I have gone to a store, saw a line, and left. This was at Daiso and TJ Maxx. I didn't need anything bad enough to wait in a line.
Since June 2021 - No more lines.

I saw a lot of waiting in line while I was in Hawaii. The high end stores always had a line, but I don’t know what their service is normally like. Maybe it’s normal.

I waited in a Costco line for about 1 minute once and twice at Trader Joe’s. Then when malls opened back up some of the more popular stores had a wait but I didn’t didn’t go to them. But at Christmas shopping I did had to wait for williams Sonoma, Apple, Sephora…

At Ikea last september. We have mostly stayed out of stores since the pandemic began. Too many Trumpist assholes who dont give a flying f*ck about other people for us to risk it.

I remember waiting in line outside at Aldi once, but it was only a few minutes.
I stood outside at the driver's license facility for a lot longer early last fall. And I know my niece had the same experience there a week or so ago.

Once at Walmart. Maybe five minutes. That was very early on in the restrictions.
Once at the Verizon store. That was a little longer, maybe 10-15 minutes. Which I found amazing honestly, even in non COVID times, once I enter the Verizon store it takes forever to have someone available to assist me.

My daughters and I were in Boston a few weeks ago and we waited in a queue to get inside Zara. They were having a big sale.
We’ve also waited in line to get into Modern Pastry in Boston and Levain Bakery in NYC. Those were more “there are so many people here that the line extends outside” situations, though, rather than one where only a certain amount of people are allowed in.

Just to Costco once at the beginning of Covid when they were really limiting the number of people in.

During COVID the closest Trader Joe's often had lines, so I stopped shopping there. I absolutely hate "small talk", so I avoid standing in line with random people if at all possible.

Once last spring at Home Depot. We were going to the garden center but they made everyone use a single entrance as they were restricting the number of people in the store. The line moved quickly.

When there were capacity limits, I waited 2 or 3 times at Walmart and Target.
I started going a bit later to avoid the longer line, outside of the "peak hours/busy times". I usually waited until about 7:30pm-ish and usually was able to go right in. Back then, Walmart was closing at 8:30pm, otherwise I would have gone even later.
I learned that 8:00am-11:00am and 5:00pm-7:00pm, as well as Saturdays and Sundays were NOT the times to go. Many stores opened an hour earlier in the mornings, for seniors and handicap.
i usually went about every 10-12 days or so.
