Didn’t read it but my Dd worked for rover. Her clients actually booked outside the app because they loved her so much. She did have a client dump their dog on her and left town. One that not only left the dog , they left the children with her ( that’s a story) and there were always the clients who booked her for one pet and then had 2 or more for her to take care of.

You’re not leaving your pet with Rover. It’s just a clearinghouse to find independent pet care providers. You still need to do your due diligence on anyone you hire, just like you would if you hired outside of Rover.

I tried to read the article, but I didn't get very far. I just can't.

What horrible stories. I'm so sad for the owners who's dogs were lost or died in these pet sitters care. What the hell is wrong with people these days? The last time we left our pets with pet sitters was 18 years ago when we went on a family trip. Luckily everything went fine and our pets (2 cats) were well taken care of.
We're planning a trip this December but DH and I are going to spend the first 2 weeks together and then he flies home and adult DS is flying down and he and I will spend the last week together so that Jesse our cat will only spend one night alone-my sister who lives 10 minutes away will stay with him. Not because of this story,we just planned it that way,but now after reading this I'm really glad we planned it like this.

Rover is being paid to do the "due diligence" in providing the names of qualified pet care individuals. If you read the article, you will find that they still have problematic pet sitters still on their site as well as not providing adequate support for those that have lost pets due to carelessness of those pet sitters. I read the article. It’s very sad and also nothing new. Awful things have a happened to people’s pets while under the care of others long before Rover. We’re also only hearing one side of the stories. My point is simply that no one should assume these pet sitters are magically all safe just because they’re on a website. Just like no one would (hopefully) leave their child with someone they found on care.com without personally vetting them, neither should anyone do that with their pets and Rover.

busy my Dd didn’t end up babysitting, even tho they begged her to stay. The dog dumping almost got her evicted.

This makes me so sad.
We found a cat sitter (comes in once a day to check food/water and do the litter) through Rover and she's great!

I prefer to find neighbors who pet sit through my neighborhood Facebook. I have a "cat lady" who drops in on my cats while I'm gone, but my dog is always boarded (it's a place with a doggy day care and she loves it).
But I wouldn't say "don't use Rover" anymore than I would say "don't use Uber". I think the majority of experiences with Rover are probably satisfactory.
