New month, new SheetLoad sketch. This one looks interesting, I can't wait to see everyone's take on this. Video link: youtu.be/meSyuxlaYYU Process video link: youtu.be/38lw8aHFMt8 August is the beginning of the new school year. I will challenge you to create cards with a school or crafty theme (hahaha...those who signed up for the Peas Birthday card exchange, this would be a good time to make at least 8 cards) You can collect extra 10 points for every new set you create with the theme. Let's get crafty and please share your creation,we love to see them . This sketch makes 8 cards if you count your points the easy-peasy way that is 80 points plus 10 points for using the specified theme. If you have any questions about the points don't hesitate to ask me. Tagging grammadee

I have the hemstitched one on my wish list. Thank you! I was able to use 25SAVEAUGUST and got them for pickup for about $12 incl tax. I've had them on my scrapbook dot com wishlist for months but they're about $25 plus shipping there.

I loved last month’s design and still think about making cards based on that. The key being “think about.” Thanks for posting it azcrafty, because I hadn’t followed the card maker who does those. I love she has downloads! This month, I’m not an oval-ist, though squares or circles could be used - and I have the Tim Holtz scribble splat die set and a favorite stamp set with scribble circles. The wonky, contemporary scribble inside the traditional oval frame feels a little discordant so I’d love to see what you all do.

I might actually do this one. I played around with papers yesterday, but so far I haven’t found a combination of papers and colors that I really like. Considering the size of my stash, I don’t know why I am having so many issues with it. It shouldn’t be that hard. Key word is “shouldn’t.” I am not really a sketch person. I know that many paper crafters love them, but I find it easier to design my own layouts and cards from scratch for some reason.
I plan to try. We’ll see if I manage to find a good paper combination. I’ve wasted several sheets of paper so far by cutting papers that looked good together uncut, but put together based on the sketch somehow turned out disappointing. Hopefully I can find a way to use those pieces on other cards.

Sketches aren’t my cuppa either. Regardless, I don’t think it’s you, @scrapnana. I think it’s the scale and balance in the design/sketch itself. I might turn it the other direction and/or even lengthen the two side pieces so they go almost the length of the card.

Agreed - I wish she had used an image or maybe a floral die cut or something else that suits the oval frame. I don’t really like the scribble anyway, and she’s used it before, but mostly it’s just not suited as a focal image IMO. I’m playing around with one card to see how I like the sketch and so far I’m thinking I will extend the back piece closer to the edges, I may skip the matting layers, and I’m playing with some little Lawn Fawn cactus pieces I had stamped and die cut ages ago. They look really cute in the oval so far.

I realized why I didn’t like the paper combinations that I had tried first. Once I figured that out, I was able to find a combination that I liked. I chose a camping theme, since I’m not doing the challenge for points, and I’d be more likely to use it. I only made one, since I ended up using scraps. I adapted the sketch a little. I used a camping lantern (Queen & Co.) instead of an oval, and I moved the banner up to the top.

@scrapnana nice! Love the lantern being the focal point and playing nice with the camping gear. Especially love the matches! lol Dumb question - the beige and brown is matting behind the center piece and the two “wings?”
What did you figure out?

Especially love the matches! lol Dumb question - the beige and brown is matting behind the center piece and the two “wings?” What did you figure out? Thank you, CardBoxer and azcrafty. Not a dumb question. I should have edited out the brown edge. The light beige is the card base. The brown edge around it is a sheet of brown cardstock that I placed the card on to take the photo. The card base just blended completely into the plastic table (same color and slightly speckled, just like the beige card stock), so I put the brown card stock under it to help it show up. However, it might have looked nice to have a brown thin mat under the beige. What I figured out (that I’d been doing wrong) was that the previous papers (beach themed) which I had chosen, cut up, and wasted, all had patterns that were too big for the sizes of rectangles being cut. The patterns competed with each other instead of complimenting each other, and not enough of the details showed. They were too busy when put together. It worked much better to have one of the patterns be more simple and subtle. I considered using a mountain range pattern with the camping paper, but again, the two competed for attention. The blue diagonal stripes were the B side of the camping paper and looked so much better….quieter, instead of demanding a divided attention. The camping pattern also had more items in the pattern and provided more colors to choose from to tie in solid colors for the card stock choices than the beach papers I had originally wanted to use.

Nice processing, scrapnnana. Sometimes it’s almost more satisfying when I figure out what doesn’t work, then when something comes together easily, though I tend to berate myself that I didn’t figure it out more quickly. Your card also serves as an inspiration to eliminate the base, fold the two wings to meet in the middle and that would be the card! I think it’s fun to change one element and make that card. Then change one more, until a few generations later there’s little resemblance but you can see how it evolved. But I do that more in my head than in real life.

I just finished 24 Sheetload cards for Aug. They are b-day cards so I may use them for the 2peas birthdays. I don't think I will post them until I decide if I want to use them for other Peas.
I didn't particularly like this design because of the wonky scribble in the center. After trying a few center inserts, I went with flowers. I think it's the first time I have used my oval dies that I bought many years ago. I like it a lot better now.

Almost forgot to share my examples! I made a few to try out the sketch and I'm much happier with them than I would've expected. I love my new oval dies, I finally used these little cactus cuties that I'd colored a couple of years ago, and I am happy with how the paper worked out. I skipped the matting layers and fudged the back piece measurement a bit (I was using a 6x8 paper). I popped the die cut letters out and colored them with a matching marker then put them back in on 2 cards and just added an extra set from a patterned paper scrap on top of the other one. Made a bonus card because I was on a roll, and of course that's my fav because of the yellow-pink ombré. Aug share by jo.blackford, on Flickr

Lovely cards joblackford. Im happy you got a great deal on the dies and that you love them. The colors are so cheerful and using almost forgotten elements is great. I need to do more of that myself.

Here are my cards. I was trying to decide if I want to use them for the Peas Birthdays, but I will make something else for that. I really wanted to use this pack of crafty themed pp my friend gave me. It turned out ok, but I'm not in love with them. I did play with the placement of the top paper piece so more of the pattern shows and as always my matting is only 1/16 inches around. http://instagram.com/p/CSPKEVWHYJW

scrapnnana, your camping card is adorable. I love, love, love that lantern. azcrafty , those cards are perfect for crafters. Totally cute. I moved my center piece over to one side or the other to allow some of the pattern to show. I really like your smaller mat. That really makes a difference. I think I will try that next time. Thanks for sharing your cute cards. joblackford , I love those cacti! You have love in your gallery.

When I saw the sketch download I wasn't a fan but the responses by craftyal's team helped a lot. I realized I liked the portrait presentation better than the landscape. And that the cardstock base needs to really fade into the background. scrapnnana so cute, the lantern, the tiny matches, the busy paper behind, the stripes under the lantern. I love your customizations. joblackford I see that you also liked a taller card. Your cute cacti bring a smile. azcrafty I love how your palette die cuts use up the oval, balanced with the sentiment. I like them a lot. MARIBETHR so pretty. The delicate colors really work. Here is my sheetload:

MARIBETHR, your cards are beautiful. I left you love in your gallery. That center design is very pretty and the gold makes them regal. "Hello" is always a great card to have for many occasions. jjpeapea, your little animals are the perfect center for this card design. Your floral print is so pretty. It looks familiar, but I can't place it. It works beautifully on a variety of card base colors. I love hello cards. They are so versatile. I decided to post mine and may not use them as 2peas b-day cards. Happy Birthday The floral print is Pink Paislee, Paige Evans. The lighter pink is the B side.

Holy macaroni, stepped away from this thread for a couple days and all the wows happen. joblackford love your cute patoot cacti - they made me laugh, and the scale combo of checks with flowers background is spot on. azcrafty I’d take one (or steal it when you weren’t looking) for my birthday in the birthday club or for any reason. MARIBETHR your color combo is so pretty and everything harmonizes so well, plus love the gold around the focal point. And you all have such neat focal points, which was missing in the original! I have to feed Theo Cat or would go on longer.

MARIBETHR your color combo is so pretty and everything harmonizes so well, plus love the gold around the focal point. Thank you, I actually like the original focal point and was wishing I had that die, but it seems like the general consensus is that people didn't really like the focal point. Well guess I am glad I didn't rush out an purchase the die just to do the card - LOL.

And have a background stamp with similar wonky curly shapes, from a different company. I loved heat embossing it and just adding a sentiment. I just didn’t think it worked as a focal point for the original card. Or if it was the focal point, all the elements behind it would change somehow. Maybe tiny odd little shapes? That would be forcing it though.

nylene your cards are so pretty - love the dark and light playing off each other and the background papers just being a soft layer. Are they part of a collection? I stand among card making giants. Well sit, actually, eating soup.
