Not only for your DH but for YOU as well. If you have a good mom-in-law (which I had and which I think you did) the loss hurts YOU too. I miss my MIL all the time. She never, ever spoke an unkind or sharp word to me. I'm so sorry for you both. Yes, this! I had the nearly perfect mother-in-law and my whole family misses her; she was dearly loved by all of us. I can tell you cared about her a great deal, and it is a big loss for you too. Dementia in any form is a cruel disease. I will say that a woman in one of my grief support groups had what she called a breakthrough in the middle of our weeks in the program - she had been mourning him as he’d been before he died, but reached a point where she was remembering more of how he had been before the dementia. It was if she was truly able to mourn THAT loss in a way she hadn’t when he was still alive and in the immediate months after. |

I'm very sorry for your loss. We just went through losing my mother to Alzheimer's. Her journey with the disease wasn't as long, but it is very hard. I opted for a much more abbreviated service and remembrance than we normally do and it was really just the right thing.

I am sorry for the loss of your mother-in-law, especially from Alzheimer's and cancer. I send condolences to your husband, you and your family.
Our family also has bittersweet anniversaries that coincide with happier times. My husband and I decided to try to reclaim those dates, for the living. Gentler days ahead.
May her memory be for a blessing.

We knew it was coming. Carol has had Alzheimer’s for a decade now and ceased to know us 5 years ago. She’s had abdominal cancer (we never put her through surgery to find out what type - she wouldn’t have understood) and finally passed of that. We planned a trip to Pittsburgh for our anniversary (today) and my younger son’s birthday (it is tomorrow). We went to the Pirates v Phillies game. Right after we got back to the hotel, my Dh got the call from hospice to let us know she had passed. Alzheimer’s is a cruel disease- my husband lost his mother years ago, and is left with so many conflicting emotions at losing her in another way. I have missed the woman who was my MIL for many years now. In this time of COVID - especially in her part of WV - we have decided against a formal memorial service. Not many of her friends are still alive, and none have seen her for years. So, we don’t need a gathering to facilitate anyone’s mourning - Dh and I have each other to work it through with. If you could spare a kind thought for my husband in this time, I would greatly appreciate it. I’m so sorry for your loss |
