Two more officers who responded to the Capitol on 1/6 have died by suicide, for a total of 4 now.
What the hell is going on?

Gut wrenching. www.cbsnews.com/news/gunther-hashida-death-by-suicide-capitol-police-officer/“ Four police officers recounted their trauma from that day last Tuesday before a House select committee tasked with investigating the attack. Capitol Police Sergeant Aquiliano Gonell, an Iraq veteran, said January 6 was worse than anything he had encountered during his Army deployment. "It was like something from a medieval battle," he said. "We fought hand to hand, inch by inch, to prevent an invasion of the Capitol by a violent mob intent on subverting our democratic process."”

It does make you wonder what is going on. I can imagine how hard it is for them to hear some of the responses to the officers who testified last week. How do you begin to heal when some elected leaders and fellow Americans deny what happened to you?

I've watched only a bit of the Officers' testimony and it broke my heart. Not only did they defend the Capitol, but they did their job on such a frightening day. I saw a bit of footage where the officer lost his eye and it floored me. Having also suffered a traumatic eye loss, it was terrible to see these barbarians with poles and weapons using them in a hateful and horrific manner. That poor officer fell to his knees, covered his eye and his fellow officers dragged him out of there. I just hope that these morons on steroids all pay dearly for the trauma that they've caused to the officers and to our Country. Our officers should NEVER have to face this type of destruction and cruelty ever again.
ETA: Even if the deceased officers weren't hurt too badly, I can't imagine them hearing testimony or seeing footage of their fellow officers being beaten and maimed in such a cruel way. It must be haunting and I'm sure that seeing the footage or hearing them testify or speak, brings it all to life even more and could make them despondent. Prayers to their families. It is OUR GOVERNMENT's fault for allowing 1/6 to happen. The DOJ allowed this to happen. Trump incited it and then watched it play out without a care. It's beyond disgraceful. May they rest in peace.

This is so tragic. Those poor men. It must’ve been terrifying that day and then to have to go through these trials. I really feel for them and their families.

They suffered major trauma both physical and mental. They are being discounted daily by former and his hench men.
They need our support.

The testimony was very traumatizing but I wonder if the behavior of many on the right played a role. I mean when you have people saying that it was like a tourist day, denying almost everything that happened and some even mocking the officers that testified. So disheartening and sickening.
Some (a lot?) of the GOP congress people couldn't even be bothered to watch the proceedings - no intention of finding out the truth.

Many of them for the insurrection itself. And even more for how they have responded to it.

This makes me feel sick. Those poor guys. And those contemptible insurrection-deniers.
I hope and pray there are no more suicides.

I am heartbroken for the officers and their families. They were willing to defend Senators and Representatives with their lives. Some of the Republicans repaid them by voting against a commission and against a committee to investigate. McCarthy blew up the committee and didn’t take it seriously. The Trump Republicans sided with former by downplaying, whitewashing and outright lying about the insurrection.

How many children have taken their own lives when they’ve been attacked by bullies? Here we have ignorant, relentless, idiotic republicans attacking them on a national stage. Fucking republicans.

I think even worse than the trauma of the day itself (which was horrible, of course) is the denial by some elected officials and the public. We all know how when there's trauma it helps the person to hear "wow, that must have been horrible" and "I just can't believe this happened" or whatever.... Statements that show we believe the person and we hear them and support them. How awful to hear from so many people that it didn't even happen.

This is incredibly sad. Their poor families. I wish that the Rs who have been soft-peddling what that mob did-and who they are-could express some appreciation for what these officers went through, but I very much doubt that they will.

I wonder if they have been contacted by some of the protestors or others who think like them after January 6 and bullied. I don't know this, it's just suspicion.

One of the officers that testified did receive a threatening voicemail www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/d-c-officer-michael-fanone-received-threatening-expletive-laced-voicemail-n1275379“I could slap you up the side of your head with a backhand and knock you out, you little f-----,” the caller said in his message, which Fanone shared on CNN. "I wish they would have killed all you scumbags, 'cause you people are scum," the man, who used homophobic and racist slurs in his message, continued after repeating former President Donald Trump’s false claim that the presidential election was stolen. “They stole the election from Trump and you know that, you scumbag. And f---ing too bad they didn't beat the s--- out of you more,” the caller said.

I wonder if they have been contacted by some of the protestors or others who think like them after January 6 and bullied. I don't know this, it's just suspicion. I imagine several are getting threatening phone calls calling them traitors and worse.... "D.C. officer who had a heart attack during Capitol riot received vulgar, threatening voice mail while testifying... “ I wish they would have killed all you scumbags, ’cause you people are scum,” the man said, referring to the police officers.
“Too bad they didn’t beat ... you more,” he added...
Some of the terminology that was used, like ‘hugs and kisses’ and ‘very fine people,’ is very different from what I experienced and what my co-workers experienced on the 6th,” Fanone told Lemon in April. “I think it’s dangerous.” Fanone, who received a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder, wrote a letter in May to members of Congress, the D.C. Council and the mayor’s office, in which he said he has “psychological trauma” and experiences “emotional anxiety” when lawmakers deny the brutal truth about Jan. 6.... “This is what happens when people tell the truth in Trump’s America,” he said."www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2021/07/29/michael-fanone-threatening-voicemail/Magas are the ruination of this nation.

I’m in a “Top Ten” mood…so in no particular order…
1. Insurrection and capitol police injury and trauma: DENIED (but all other police indiscriminately defended) 2. Covid severity, precautions and vaccine: DENIED, REJECTED 3. Election results: DENIED 4. Racism and targeted police brutality: DENIED 5. Me, Too: WHAT ABOUT ALL THOSE POOR MEN FALSELY ACCUSED? 6. Women’s rights over their own bodies: DENIED 7. Mainstream media: DENIED, REJECTED 8. Dangers of unbridled gun ownership: DENIED 9. Climate change: DENIED 10. Scientific, medical, expert data: DENIED, REJECTED
1. Facebook “My sister’s friend is a nurse and she says…” posts: ACCEPTED 2. Forwarded group emails: ACCEPTED 3. Men of the cloth in lieu of qualified experts: ACCEPTED 4. Fox News and partisan radio: ACCEPTED 5. Unsupported opinion as factual truth: ACCEPTED 6. Child trafficking, transgender people and masked students as among the worst threats we’re facing: ACCEPTED 7. White, Republican Jesus Christ: ACCEPTED 8. Donald Trump’s past glory and future ascendancy: ACCEPTED 9. Voting for Q-Anon numbskulls over any Democrat: ACCEPTED 10. The GOP as the protector of morals, free elections, justice for all, and American exceptionality: ACCEPTED
What could go wrong?

It's the "beliefs" over evidence crowd writ large. They are killing our chances for progress and better futures with their stone age/bronze age-informed beliefs.

I feel just terrible for them and for their families. I can’t imagine how frightening the experience was for them, and how powerless they felt. I remember watching things unfolding on TV and texting my husband about it, and it seemed unreal—imagine being in it, and having your fellow Americans do that.
And then, after, instead of being celebrated as heroes, like the law enforcement officers who respond to most other terrorist attacks, being made fun of on national television.

Don Lemmon from CNN just talked with Officer Fanone and he extended the offer to call anytime if he needed to talk. I hope family, friends, neighbors and aquaintances are reaching out to the officers at the Capitol on Jan 6

I just gotta ask…is anyone extending heartfelt sympathy to any of the officers injured during night after night of riots? Pelted (sometimes head shots) with rocks, frozen bottles of water, urine and whatever else? Some receiving serious injuries? What about the burning objects thrown at them. Anyone care about that? Folks standing and spitting in their faces in the middle of a pandemic. No? Not the same? Officers who have received death threats just like these capitol officers? Whose spouses sat at home hoping all would end well and their loved one would come home unscathed? Any fucks given for the officers suffering from PTSD? For any of those officers who succumbed to the terror they experienced? No? Nothing for them cause ‘that is different?’ Hmmmmmmm…this rises to the top cause it was at the capitol?

I’m sorry; the next time I post a thread of concern, I’ll be sure to first list all the other people in the world who have suffered similar traumas to make sure I’m not unfairly singling out any one person or group. Just like when I post anything negative about a politician, I’ll be sure to preface my comments with three pages about all the other politicians in history who have committed the same acts. Or we could all just be grownups and acknowledge that concern for one does not exclude concern for others.

And to be fair…if you (general you) have expressed concern for officers nationwide for this shit storm of crap activity they have had to deal with I could of missed it…did I?
Of course you don’t have to have a disclaimer but to act all shocked and upset about what officers dealt with at the capitol and not acknowledge officers all over the nation wading through the muck is at best weak

My husband was a law enforcement officer who was murdered at age 41 without rational cause by someone he was trying to arrest for a relatively minor matter. I am a left-leaning moderate and I support law enforcement. I do not support racism, whether overt and deliberate, or unconscious and systemic. I understand that sometimes the police have to kill someone, but also that sometimes police shootings are not supported by the evidence. Am I allowed to express an opinion on this subject without you sneering at me?

Of course you don’t have to have a disclaimer but to act all shocked and upset about what officers dealt with at the capitol and not acknowledge officers all over the nation wading through the muck is at best weak There have been several threads over the past year and a half expressing concern for officers injured and killed in everything that’s gone on. There have also been acknowledgements of times when officers were part of the problem and incited violence or killed someone unlawfully, and of times when the danger to police from protestors was, um, overstated by some for political reasons. The facts in this case aren’t really in dispute. Police were brutally attacked by folks who had been all “back the blue” up into that point. They’ve now been mocked and degraded on TV by people with prominent platforms. Sadly, some have taken their own lives. I don’t think any of us are shocked by what’s happening at this point, but I also think your criticism is more about an axe you have to grind than anything else. As you say, a disclaimer shouldn’t be necessary. Perhaps a search of previous threads about police should be required before making a snotty post on what should have just been a thread of concern.

Just expressing an observation/opinion…which is what we do on boards.
