Looking back at pics of my kids' birthday parties in the early 90s and I see some gift bags. So at least by then.

I was going to guess mid to late 80s, so the Hallmark date matches my memory at any rate.

I tend to use bags for birthdays, but wrap at Christmas. Simply because it's hard to stack bags ahead of time. I like to stack all of the gifts we'll be giving ahead of time, and sort them out the last few days before, so I only use a few bags, because they can only be the top layer of gifts. But I do recycle gift wrap, too. If we receive anything with shipping/packing paper used inside the box, I wrap with it. And I have bags of pieces of old wrap that was still in good enough shape to wrap something smaller the next year. (And I use all manner of boxes for my family members. They know they may get their present in a tea bag box or a cracker box!)

My guess was early 80’s. In my memory they were the trendy thing for wedding party gifts and showers as my friends began to marry after college. ETA personalization with dot letters and hanging stuff from handles! Anyone else remember that?

We do recycle the gift paper, and people tend to pass my fancy bows/ribbon back to me so I can reuse them. Wired ribbon is wonderful for fluffing up again! And while I will reuse gift bags given to me for multiple purposes, I know a lot of people don’t and they end up in the trash. I do the same, I keep my ‘box of good boxes’ as I happen along them during the year. And some of DH’s family does as well. I will always remember the year his tween/teen sister opened a present from her Grandma and her face just dropped. Her present was wrapped in a box for a bible! Her young self was a tad disappointed. But some of the oddest things come in great boxes, with good sturdy corners and flat sides in a useful size. DH’s boxer briefs for instance. Gotta be careful who you use those for

I only wrap young children's presents be it birthday or Christmas. I have no idea how long I've been using gift bags except that it's a number of years. Most of the gift I receive are in gb so I keep them and re-use them for my gift giving.

I love wrapping gifts and making them special, but I HATE the waste associated with wrapping paper. Our extended family all switched to gift bags and we basically all keep recycling through them year after year. I haven’t had to buy bags in over a decade - I just grab one from the pile of bags received.

About 18 years ago, my dd received about 12 fabric bags made out of Christmas fabric. From her then mil. She has used them for her children ever since. They are just adorable. And, such a thoughtful gift.

When they got smart.
I hate wrapping presents. It seems so pointless to take the time to fold the corners, find coordinating ribbon, bows, and whatever, only to have it ripped apart. I truly don't care how I get a present either.
I do get how people do enjoy the process and the presentation, but I LOVE gift bags.

I don't even remember when gift bags started being used. I loved to wrap presents and make really pretty handmade bows. So, I never paid much attention to gift bags. Present days, I don't give out many gifts. Maybe 50/50 are wrapped vs. gift bags.

Sometimes I'm just too fatigued to wrap a present. Gift bags have saved me more than a few times.

I’ve been using gift bags for years. I save any I receive and reuse them. I don’t think I’ve bought a new one for several years. Many of my friends and family actually hand me the gift bag back after they have opened the present I have given them!
