At a school board meeting last night, parents were saying a lot of false things like masks not being part of PPE as well as some crazy stuff like referring to the 4th estate. One of them was masks causing tooth decay. Has anyone seen any actual peer reviewed studies proving this? A quick search on google just found a lot of speculation by dentists. If dentists are seeing more cavities, couldn’t that be a result of a lot of factors like kids missing cleanings during covid?

But yet, dentists and their staffs wear masks all day. Yes, exactly. Doctors and nurses, too. I did find this which seems to suggest that people are less concerned about oral health while wearing masks and brush less frequently. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8020324/

I'm going to admit to something really gross.
Pre-masks, I would never dream of leaving the house without brushing my teeth. Now that I'm wearing a mask, very-occasionally I'll miss brushing my teeth on the weekend and when I go to the grocery store, I'm the only one who has to deal with it so I don't bother.
To be clear, I almost always brush my teeth.
The only way I can see masks contributing to tooth decay is if people skip on the regular. LOL

I don't worry now at work if I eat something garlicky. If I don't have breath mints, no big deal.

I am a former dental hygienist and still get all the emails. I don't read each one, but haven't seen any screaming headlines about masks causing tooth decay. I really think if there were science to back up this claim, it would be all over the dental newsletters.
People are weird!

I would assume that most people still brush before leaving their house snd after diner or before bed. I’m not wearing a mask at home so no changes and can’t imagine many will change their behavior as far as brushing. I think if anything it’s that kids aren’t seeing their dentist. Our dentist was only doing emergency visits for over a year. No cleanings no visits so cavities aren’t caught until they are bigger. I’m glad we switched to electric for my DS.

I could see a connection there if people are filling their masks with candy and using them as feed bags.

I could see a connection there if people are filling their masks with candy and using them as feed bags. Are you not supposed to do that? Lol When I was wfh, I brushed my teeth more because i was home with my own bathroom in which to brush them. People are just trying to come up with any dumb reason not to wear masks.

Maybe these parents believe their kids can't brush their teeth if they have to wear a mask. Like it is an either/or thing and you can't do both?

I cannot stand the smell of my own breath in a mask, even when I am freshly brushed. I almost always chew gum while wearing a mask

I read something about this the other day. They were saying that masks lead to increased mouth breathing, which can lead to tooth decay. However, the article I read said that there wasn't much information to confirm if wearing masks for several hours at a time would be enough to cause problems. They said the concern is with people who are chronic mouth breathers due to medical issues, not just during the time they wear masks.

That's ridiculous. But none of these anti vaxxers have ever said anything that makes sense.
I brush my teeth and use mouthwash even more when wearing a mask. I don't want to have to smell bad breath! I would have guessed better dental health because of masks.

I have no idea, but my self, DH, & my kids have all been to the dentist recently, after we all but one (One of my kids had an appointment mere days before the lock down) missed our twice yearly appointments in 2020. And not one of us had any problems. We were all fine. And by sheer coincidence I was just talking to my dad last week, who said that he just finally got back to the dentist, and he was fine as well. That's not to say that some people may not be having issues, just that we haven't and I yet to hear from a single person I know that they have, either.

My guess (possibly wishful thinking) would be that people eat, then put the mask back on right away and don't tend to drink as much throughout the day that would help rinse bacteria out.

I had 4 cavities at my last cleaning (and I didn't miss any cleanings over the last 1.5 years). I had to get two crowns too. My dentist said it was a trend she was seeing. I have seen this reported on quite a few dental sites:
What is Mask Mouth One emerging dental concern is an oral health issue called Mask Mouth. By some estimations, almost 50% of the dental patients being seen today are experiencing signs of Mask Mouth. Patients that have had a history of healthy teeth and gums are now showing problems, but they are not due to poor dental hygiene. Instead they are a direct result of mask wearing.
When you wear a face mask it increases the dryness in your mouth. This is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and viruses to grow. Your body produces saliva to create a protective barrier. There are also antimicrobial components that are produced to fight the bacteria. Saliva also plays an important part in preventing viruses from entering directly into our bodies.
What is the actual impact of using face masks on our oral health? That same protective equipment that we are using to prevent contact with COVID-19 is directly creating negative implications to our health.
Increase of Tooth Decay When the mouth becomes dry because of wearing the face masks, the saliva produced to flush food particles in our teeth is decreased. Sugar helps bacterial to thrive which and with the food particles not being removed you see tooth decay.
Inflamed Gums When your body’s immune system sees increases in bacteria and viruses it will create inflammation of the gums. This could be a signal that there are too many bacteria in our mouth that is attacking your gums. This can eventually lead to periodontal disease.
Bad Breath Prolonged dryness in the mouth is the perfect environment for odor-causing bacteria to grow. This is then called Halitosis or Bad Breath. Many patients say that they notice a change in the breath when they have worn a face mask for long periods of time.
Gum Disease Once you have Gum Disease it is an irreversible dental condition and will require care for the rest of your life. This will slowly damage your gums and bone structure in your mouth. Many do not see any symptoms until they begin having receding and inflamed gums
It looks like it is a real thing. Colgate was one the sites I found this information.

I'm sorry about your cavities. However, anecdotal evidence proves nothing. I saw that on the Colgate website, but it's all speculation. There is no data or studies to back it up. Colgate is a private company, their goal is to make money by selling more toothpaste. The info on their website is not impartial or even scientific.

It was also reported on quite a few dental sites.....you know dentists. What I copied and included came from a dental site not Colgate. I jyust said it was also on Colgate's site. I will consider what the dentist say since they have the training not me.

Find an actual peer reviewed study or actual data that proves masks cause tooth decay. There are plenty of other reasons there might be more tooth decay right now like fewer cleanings, less brushing etc. This study seems to suggest that people are less concerned about oral health while wearing masks and brush less frequently. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8020324/Furthermore, the pandemic has only highlighted the inequities in oral health care. There are so many reasons there might be increased tooth decay and no actual proof that it’s the result of wearing masks. www.cdc.gov/pcd/issues/2020/20_0266.htmeta - for every dentist claiming masks lead to tooth decay, there’s probably another claiming it’s false. Dentists are probably as divided on masks as the rest of the country, red vs blue, Republicans vs Democrats, crazy unmask our kids parents vs parents trying to protect their kids etc. www.thesuperdentists.com/the-list-are-masks-causing-cavities/Rather than than listening to dentists or a toothpaste company, I’ll stick with actual science.

I call confirmation bias- don’t wanna wear a mask so will look for “info” that confirms wearing a mask is bad. I also wonder whether the people who think wearing a mask is unnecessary would be happy to have surgery in a theatre where none of the medical staff were wearing masks……?

Maybe it is the work from home people who aren't brushing to leave their house?
